Al Gore At SXSW 2012: 'Democracy Has Been Hacked'

Al Gore Sxsw 2012

JAKE COYLE   03/12/12 08:12 PM ET  AP

AUSTIN, Texas — In a wide-ranging talk about the Internet and government, Al Gore urged the techie crowd at South By Southwest to use digital tools to improve government.

The former vice president sat for a conversation with Napster co-founder and Web entrepreneur Sean Parker on Monday at SXSW in a flashy tete-a-tete that drew an audience of thousands at the Austin Convention Center and more viewers via a live stream.

"Our democracy has been hacked," said Gore, framing Washington gridlock and the effects of special interest money in digital terms.

To fix what he called a no-longer functional U.S. government, Gore urged the audience to begin a new "Occupy Democracy" movement. He pushed for the creation and implementation of digital tools and social media to "change the democratic conversation."

Gore talked of a "Wiki-democracy" of "digital flash mobs calling out the truth" and "a government square that holds people accountable."

Parker, who was famously portrayed by Justin Timberlake in "The Social Network," has gotten into politics by investing in Votizen, an online network of voters that leverages social networks to campaign for their issues. He also sits on the board of NationBuilder, which also seeks to organize political change.

Parker said he believes social media is only its infancy of what it can do to spur action. He cited the Internet rally against the Stop Online Piracy Act as a hint of the power of social networks. He called the protest "Nerd Spring," alluding to the Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East.

Both Gore and Parker derided the dominant role of television in elections and political dialogue. Change, Parker said, won't come from within the political system.

To applause, Gore added; "I can confirm that."

I personally find it shocking, to say the least, that a man like Al Gore, who once held the office of Vice President and was nearly elected to the highest office in the land, apparently does not know, or understand, the fundamental difference between a Democracy and a Constitutional Republic such as our own. I guess he was absent from grade school on the day types of government were discussed.

Just because we live in a Republic doesn't mean we can't use Democracy to affect change. Last time I checked, representatives were elected officials, not appointed.

You're very confused Reverend and could obviously use a little guidance regarding some basic differences in systems of government. This may help...

I almost forgot that Al invented the Internet. He makes good money by being a digital tool. Speaking of which, I heard that Mr. Gore took a Viagra today and is now 3 inches taller

Go Al - We love you!

I love that Al so antagonizes the right, so much so that I think there are a number of permanently paid republicon trolls that always go after him, its interesting how much enmity he gets whenever there is a article about him, He could have saved this country, if it were not stolen with voter rigging....That was part of the the hacking he's talking about.
We should never underestimate how crookish and low the right are willing to go to gain and take power, this is not about finding commonality, it's about realizing that the right are like immature children, we need to be firm about their boundaries otherwise they will always be pushing against them. And we can see what happens when children run anything, disaster ensues and the adults are left to pick up the mess.

Go Al - Please take all these comments against you as a good sign.

Oh, so now Gore credits himself with founding Occupy Everything?

Talk about alternate realities, I went to bed reassured that Al Gore had won the Presidency that November night when Florida turned blue.
I woke up to the nightmare of 8 years of Bush/Cheney
Thats when I knew that someone else other than the people we elect were in charge. They had their way for eight years that we were supposed to forget.
9-11, Katrina, Iraq, economic meltdown.

I thank the Lord every time I see this man's picture that the Supreme Court stepped in to stop him and the Florida Supreme Court from stealing the election. I can't even imagine what this country would have been like. I actually believe it might have been worse than it is now and this is horrible. He is just so disgustingly awful, I can't describe it. No neck monster.

----Change, Parker said, won't come from within the political system.
That depends on what kind of change he is talking about. As an instance, in the case of bad change that benefits the entitled, it, most likely than not, comes from within.

"Al Gore At SXSW 2012: 'Democracy Has Been Hacked' "
Great.
The use of Algore and "hack" in the same sentence.
Very appropriate.

Ummm Al?
You didn't notice that took place in 2000, with the election stole from....hmmm.. who was that Democrat that won but cashed in and created one of the most egregious, and disastrous, capitulations in US political history?
Come on Mr. Gore... you know who I'm talking about... really smart guy?..... had a lot of great ideas?... honest..not a war monger? ....was married to that wingy uber-Christian that started the PMRC and helped make metal music explode in popularity?

You know ... THAT guy.... he saw democracy hacked 12 years back!
You're a little behind the curve on this one Al!

Yes, perhaps he is a little late to this particular fray.
But, better late than never. We shouldn't criticize someone for growing.
