One beauty queen is baldly going where no winner has gone before.
When Debbe Ebben, Miss Chugiak-Eagle River of Alaska, reached her childhood cancer research $2,500 fundraising goal, she donated the money to the St. Baldrick's Foundation, an organization she supports as part of her pageant platform. Then she shaved her head, 9news.com reports.
St. Baldrick's, a national charity that raises money for childhood cancer research through head-shaving fundraising events, aims to surpass the $28.3 million its volunteers raised in 2011.
"This is for you Ellie," Ebben said to one young girl whose leukemia is now in remission, "Just as much as they say I'm doing for them, they've brought so much more to me, and [there's] just overwhelming emotion of what it all meant to be to do this -- it was for her, it was for kids like her who fight cancer."
Ebben's mom also shaved her hair off, supporting both her daughter and the organization.
"Our biggest goal is to bring a sense of normalcy to kids," Ebben told 9news.com. "And to let them know that its ok to be bald, and bald can be beautiful."
