Leica Readies To Open 1st U.S. Camera Store Location In D.C.

German Camera Company Sets Up Shop Downtown

WASHINGTON -- If you walk along F Street NW downtown, you'll notice a lot of progress on the first U.S. brick-and-mortar location of Leica, a German camera company that's had plans to open in D.C. since last year.

According to The 42 blog:

This particular store has a new Twitter account and I saw workers headed in and out of the space yesterday, busily working.

Leica's spot is located at 977 F St. NW.

It comes at a time when many of D.C.'s camera stores have shuttered their doors. Earlier this year, Beltsville, Md.,-based company Penn Camera, which was founded in 1953 by the Zweig family, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closed a majority of its stores.

Another Beltsville-based shop, Ritz Camera, also filed for bankruptcy in 2009. It sold off 400 stores nationwide to stay afloat.
