'Sex Strike': Liberal Women's Group Finds New Way To Support Contraception Coverage

Sex Strike

First Posted: 03/13/2012 2:30 pm Updated: 03/13/2012 3:09 pm

A group that supports health care coverage of contraception is calling for women to withhold sex from their partners between April 28 and May 5.

"This will help people understand that contraception is for women and men, because men enjoy the benefit of women making their own choices about when and if they want to get pregnant," Liberal Ladies who Lunch says on its website. "Once congress and insurance agencies agree to cover contraception, we will then resume having sex. Until then men will have to be content with their left hand."

On its Facebook page, the group charts a brief history of similar "strikes," starting with Aristophanes' ancient Greek play "Lysistrata," where women refuse to have sex until the end of the Peloponnesian War.

The proposal has attracted some negative Facebook reactions, according to The Daily Caller, which reports that an opponent of contraception coverage commented on the "irony of...ceasing sex in order to get free contraception."

But the movement may have also gotten some recent, if unofficial, support from the wife of Virginia State Del. David Albo (R-Fairfax Station). Albo says she turned him down in the bedroom due to his support for the state's transvaginal ultrasound bill.

Female lawmakers have found other ways to protest bills limiting contraception and abortion rights, including a slew of often-satirical legislation imposing similar rules on men.

There are almost 1,000,000 abortions in the US each year. If the uncontracepted liberal women stop having sex for a week, we can infer that will mean roughly 20,000 fewer abortions in about nine months. At $300 a pop, that's about $6,000,000 in lost revenue for the abortion industry. I guess Planned Parenthood had better start buttering up Komen - if could be a lean January.

Withhold sex for 1 week? News flash, according to most research, married couples, with kids generally have sex once per month. 50% of couples who have been married 10+ years have sex less often (which each other).

Hmmm... The article says, "Once congress and insurance agencies agree to cover contraception, we will then resume having sex. Until then men will have to be content with their left hand."

This is playing right into the Church's teachings. Abstinence.

I will withhold from making a comment on what I think of the organization. :-)

I think they're going about this the wrong way. Unless the Republican's wives are the ones with-holding and it's more than just a week, I don't see this very effective. How about going about this in a different direction and start having a lot more sex, bragging about it to Republicans and even getting caught by Republicans by having sex in public places. That way, they'll really want to make sure the people don't breed. lol

Kind of ironic that the group that has reproductive rights is going on strike against the people who have no reproductive rights.

I'm going on strike too. I refuse to pay the mortgage until my wife joins the movement to reform the US family court system.

Silly. Don't forget that the basis of this tactic- the old Greek play "Lysistrata" - was a comedy.

LOL... a sex strike by old hairy womyn... go for it!

Hmmmm....I can't help but think that this strike may remind all of us that we are not rutting animals who need to have sex all the time and whenever we want it. We do, in fact, have control of our libidos. If we can choose not to have sex in order to try to influence public policy, then we can certainly choose not to have sex if we don't want to get pregnant!

Has anyone ever seen that e-mail about how conservative women look as compared to liberal women? Enough said.

My theory: failing to realize that what little, lousy sex they get is a result of their self-centered approach to women, conservative men want to demean women even further as punishment for not supporting their self-centeredness.

A co-worker of my wife who was formerly married to a conservative man and made a habit of dating conservative me made the comment that "Sex is over-rated". My wife related my comment to the effect that she just hadn't met a man who cared enough about her to make it special. About 2 years later, out of the blue, the co-worker said to my wife, "Your husband was right." Having forgotten the exchange, my wife asked, "About what?" Her co-worker replied, "About sex. With a man who really cares about you, it's wonderful!".

Me want sex. Me have club. Me no care what women think. I call shots. // end sarcasm

Progressive men will have no problems nor lack sexual fulfillment as a result of this. Conservative women who've been treated as little better than prostitutes might just decide that, if their men want to treat them that way and still want sex, they're going to "raise the price". After all, that's what the Free Market is all about, right? So glad I'm not a conservative.
