Afghanistan Soldiers, US Troops Disarmed Before Panetta Meeting

Afghan Soldiers

Afghan soliders and US troops arriving at a meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Wednesday were told to come unarmed, the AP reports.

Panetta arrived in Afghanistan on Wednesday in the wake of a U.S. solider gunning down 16 Afghan civilians over the weekend.

Panetta met with a crowd of troops as well as several Afghan leaders to assert the United States' commitment to its continuing mission in the country, which has come into question since the incident. Afghan citizens, already reeling from an earlier incident in which U.S. soliders accidentally burned Qurans, have reacted to the shooting with outrage.

Afghan soldiers were told prior to the meeting to not bring their guns in. Shortly before the meeting began, U.S. forces were given the same order. A senior military official told Bloomberg that the order was given to Americans soldiers to prevent sending the message that the Afghans can't be trusted.

Officials told the AP that the command was not issued by Panetta's team.

Despite the recent violence, the president has denied claims that U.S. troops will depart from Afghanistan sooner than 2014 withdrawal timeline.

A recent poll from ABC News/Washington Post shows that 60% of Americans think that the war in Afghanistan has not been worth fighting.

US soldiers disarmed for Panetta, Must make our troops swell with pride that our government has so much confidence in them . Soldiers being ordered to secure their weapons for the very people that send them in harms way.

Maybe they were worried about Panetta being fragged? I mean multiple tours, 10+ years, multiple never ending wars, it all takes its toll on the GIs. Fragging happened in Vietnam after all.

Yeah, wow.
Way to insult your only allies in the region.

It is nice to know that the American Secretary of Defense fears his American soldiers as much as he fears his friendly allies, the Afghan soldiers. Presumably he is not getting as much compliance from his enemy, the Taliban.

I presume your comment relates to the Panetta's team not issuing the order and you expect our brave politicians to say something differently? Military command behaves at the behest of its civilian leadership. Remember the "Mission Accomplished" banner that the presendential team knew nothing about.

Murderous political figures are always afraid of speaking in front of armed troops.

I think the SecDef is scared due to admitting obama administration's treason earlier this month in a senate hearing.

When I was stationed in Bagram as well as Kabul, We never surrendered our Rifles. Our rifles were always loaded with a 30 round mag. Always. You sleept with it that way, you ate with it that way. When I went to the shower, my battle buddy held on to it. I was one of only two dismounted Medics. Everytime a dismounted patrol went out the gate one of two of us were on it, to include route recon, and security patrols. I racked up over 150, patrols. The first thing that you did when you stepped out the gate was to charge your weapon, Mine was an M-4 carbine. The last thing you did on the way back into the base was to drop your magazine and clear your weapon, then Reload your 30 round mag. Why? Because youe weapon is your life, its your battle Buddie's life.
Now That was Army. These were Marine's In Helmand province. One of the most violent outpost's in Afghanistan. Home of the Taliban. The General, who gave that order should be dismissed. Panetta, should have never shown up there if he as Secretary of Defence, cannot trust his own Marines. He put many lives at risk. He should go back home and stay in Washington, DC . Where he belongs. He was just there to kiss Karzai's ring anyway.

Especially after a car tried to hit my plane! What if the entire Taliban hord had lauched an all out attack? If I were the Taliban leadership and knew that Penetta, the secretary of defence of the United states of America was there, I would have sent a thousand worthless rag heads into that place. While 400 Marines were trying to unlock their gun racks and find the right soldier for each weapon. Well You would hate to think of the out come wouldnt you. Go back to Washington D.C. Its dangerous over their.Probably not the place for Panetta.

You can bet your last dollar that the next time Panetta shows up the Taliban will be ready because now they know what a coward he is and that he is afraid of his own troops. We have to get this set of losers out of our white house and out of our government, and we need to get them out as soon as possible if not sooner.
Impeachment is only 3 years overdue, but it can still clear the deck.

yes. It would have been much preferable to disarm the Afghans and have them see the Americans fully armrd. that would provide a huge boost to American-Afghan relations. That's right out of the Taliban playbook.

Then send the ANA soldiers to another area. Look, Disarming Marines in the middle of an imminent danger zone is foolish at best. At worst Marine's die. I cannot imagine someone giving that order. I would rather insult an ANA soldier than loose a bunch of Marines. What if a couple of ANA soldies had an AK stashed away? Showed up inside the tent? There would be a lot of dead Marines today wouldnt there. The Taliban , have eyes and ears on the ground at all times Via , ANA soldiers. Who's to say what could have happened.

You've already had a Taliban , threat, via a car bomb. Who's to say what could have wandered into that tent, holding an AK,47.

Of course, the real story this week is that the CBO revised Obama's estimate of 900 Billion for Obamacare.........up to 2.6 TRILLION.

We should be rioting in the streets if it had only increased 20%.

The Huffington Hoax didn't even report the story.

How do you like being played by the White House and the Liberal Media?

Common sense in Afghanistan !

We got to get out of there folks. No one has civilized these people for thousands of years. They choose to be primative. As for disarming them, a Afghan translater drove his vehicle carrying a jug of gasoline toward Leon Panetta ,didn't make it , then set himself on fire. Folks if this is what your friends do,you don't need enemies.
