Cecile Richards, Planned Parenthood President: Mitt Romney's Plan To 'Get Rid Of' Us Won't Balance Budget

Mitt Romney Planned Parenthood

First Posted: 03/14/2012 3:53 pm Updated: 03/14/2012 4:10 pm

Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said that she was traveling in Texas Tuesday when she read about Mitt Romney's promise to "get rid of" Planned Parenthood in order to cut the deficit.

"I was really stunned to read that Mitt Romney has now said he wants to get rid of Planned Parenthood, because really what that means is he wants to get rid of preventative health care for 3 million folks every year," Richards told reporters on Wednesday.

"It shows an extraordinary lack of understanding of family planning and the budget to say one of the ways he's going save money in this country is by ending birth control and family planning," she added. "The most conservative economist will tell you that family planning saves money. It saves taxpayers money. It's ludicrous to think that Mitt Romney, who is running for president of the United States, thinks we're going to balance the budget by ending birth control access in this country."

Former Massachusetts Gov. Romney has previously expressed his opposition to the federal funding of Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest family planning provider, and his opposition to the Title X federal family planning program, but his comments on Tuesday made it sound like he wanted to axe the provider altogether.

"Of course you get rid of Obamacare, that's the easy one, but there are others," Romney told a reporter in Missouri when asked how to balance the budget. "Planned Parenthood, we're going to get rid of that."

For Romney to now say that he wants to "get rid" of Planned Parenthood seems to contradict his prior positions, when he sought Planned Parenthood's endorsement during his run for governor, attended a fundraiser for the family planning provider and filled out a survey in which he said he supported state-funded abortions for low-income women.

Planned Parenthood has become a lightning rod for political controversy over the fact that some of its clinics provide abortions. But it also provides affordable contraception, STD testing, cancer screenings and maternity care to millions of low-income, uninsured and medically underserved men and women across the country, and all of the federal money it receives go to health services that are not related to abortion.

The Romney campaign quickly clarified the candidate's comment, noting that Romney did not mean to say that he would get rid of the whole organization -- just that he would "have to make some tough decisions about spending."

But Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) told reporters on Wednesday that she isn't buying that argument.

"If Mitt Romney could get rid of Planned Parenthood, he absolutely would do that," Schakowsky said. "The most he can do, the best he can do, is get rid of federal funding, which will still have a significant effect on women in this country. When he said get rid of it, he meant he would do whatever he could to get rid of it -- I think it's really not a true difference in meaning."

She continued, "Because this is a person who in 2002 sought the endorsement of Planned Parenthood, he's working harder than anyone else to convince them he's more extreme than anyone else when it comes to being against Planned Parenthood."

"He feels like he has further to go in order to persuade voters he's really the conservative candidate."

Conservatives think Planned Parenthood is a bad thing.

Liberals think Unplanned Parenthood is what would happen without Planned Parenthood.

A true single payer healthcare system would alleviate this problem.

Another lib taking someone's comments out of context then lying to the public about it. Ms. Richard's knows full well what Romney and many other Republicans are saying. She also knows that losing federal funding will not damage Planned Parenthood. That organization is more than capable of sustaining itself financially by getting private funding. With all the pro choicers out their, I'm sure contributing won't be a problem and most likely would raise more than enough money annually.

Just curious, what is it Ms. Richards knows full well? You make a LOT of assumptions in your reply. Is that what Republicans do? Again, just curious.

Are you kidding? They always have the answers to any question! It's just trying to find the sources and attributions that seem to be difficult for them!

So, barring those, we DO have to assume that you are pulling it out of your, ahem..."digestive tract."

That's not true. Rick Perry closed down 12 health care clinics in his state, some of which were run by Planned Parenthood. Shutting them down just made it harder for low-income women to get contraception and cancer screenings.

"the clinic (Planned Parenthood) closed in October, along with more than a dozen others in the state, after financing for women’s health was slashed by two-thirds by the Republican-controlled Legislature."

"Although the cuts also forced clinics that were not affiliated with the agency to close — and none of them, even the ones run by Planned Parenthood, performed abortions — supporters of the cutbacks said they were motivated by the fight against abortion."

"Wayne Christian, a Republican state representative said, “I don’t think anybody is against providing health care for women. What we’re opposed to are abortions.” He added, “Planned Parenthood is the main organization that does abortions. "So we kind of blend being anti-abortion with being anti-Planned Parenthood.” "

How is this "fighting abortion?" Did he stop any pregnancies from being terminated? Of course not. So why would he shut them down, unless he wanted to make it MORE DIFFICULT FOR WOMEN TO GET HEALTH CARE??

He's not saving any babies, and he's probably killing some women who won't have early detection of cancer.

Sounds like a WAR ON WOMEN to me!

The states have a constitutional right to legislate. When it comes to our federal government interfering, is where I have issues. This woman lied. Romney did not say he wanted to get rid of Planned Parenthood. He like many of us do not want taxpayer money funding them. Not because of the abortions, that's only one issue, but the mere fact that they can and should be independent.

I live in Texas and it IS not only a war on women it is a Religious War on Women. Separation of church and state is getting on thinner and thinner ice, seems to me.

I still don't understand why anyone would support an organization that has such awful effectiveness. There are women getting pregnant all over that don't want kids. Maybe they should spend less time playing politics and more time on community outreach, because their performance is atrocious.

Planned Parenthood is not in the business of telling women what to do contrary to the GOP. They provide preventative healthcare in addition to contraception. When I was young and didn't have insurance or a family doctor I went to Planned Parenthood for my physicals. Those who opine about Planned Parenthood should really educate themselves about the services they provide first.

TFJ doesn't get it. You can educate people and you can promote planning and responsibility but people are gonna do what people are gonna do. You can't legislate their behavior or their choices, but you can make the information available.

The Santorum people have already promulgated the substitute for Planned Parenthood - aspirin. Romney will now have to move to the right of this - perhaps by proposing the less expensive alternative of cotton balls.

For women or men? My plan is that all men would be forced to use Viagra regularly (just like Rush thinks women use birth control pills). Then women would refuse to have sex with any man. And the men would be required by law to wear boxing gloves even in the shower and in bed. How long do you think it would be before there are no males remaining in the GOP/TP?

Romney is lost. He's so much damaged goods. Is he paying is advisers? If so,he should demand his money back.I understand saying this about P.P to pander to the hard core wingnuts that vote these primaries and such...but really? Seriously? Alienate woman across the country?
Planned Parenthood is like,350 million? It's a drop in the bucket.A drop Romney.A big businessman like you should understand that!!
Keep going GOP and various sycophants.....Your extremist pandering should help the left make up for all those minorities whom are having their voting rights violated....

If the reaction to Mr. Romney's anti-Planned Parenthood statement is anything like the reaction when Komen withdrew its funding...well, PP should be showing a significant upswing in contributions and Mr. Romney should be showing a significant downturn in voter support.

His statements make no economic sense. There is no way you can balance the budget through elimination of public services that are a small fraction of government spending. These services have shown time and again that they are investments with a positive return. If Romney is the astute businessman he claims to be, this is a no brainer.

So, his comments aren't about the budget at all. Romney is an empty suit. He has no idealogical core. He merely panders to the far right in hopes of getting the GOP nomination.

That's okay MItt - you just keep on, keep'n on and come November American voters will have to make some tough decisions about who is qualified to be president. As for your time after the election -- don't worry, you won't have to be completing any change of address cards for the Postal Service, which you'd also probably like to "get rid of".

Mitt's not qualified for the office because he doesn't have an ounce of common sense, not because of his 19th Century/Robber Baron notions of just about everything -- he doesn't have enough sense to keep his trap shut about his squirrelly ideas.

Mittens can't be concerned with insignificant concerns like helping the poor or balancing the budget.
He has much bigger concerns like how he is going to take care of the big boys, like the Koch Brothers who bought and paid for him with their PAC contributions.

The reason why Mittens looks like he can't connect with the working class people is simply because he feels that he doesn't have to. He is convinced that he can buy his way into the White House.

Let's get real for a minute. His financial success is attributed to his daddy and venture capitalism. How is he going to translate gutting corporations to running this country? If he guts the country, we are pretty much screwed.

You call that experience?

Mitt Romney has no problem saying the strangest (and stupidest) things - because he will be saying the exact opposite things the next day, in the next state.

The man just flaps his mouth and the nonsense comes flying out
