Japan Earthquake 2012: Tokyo Region Hit By Strong Quake

By MARI YAMAGUCHI 03/14/12 12:32 PM ET AP

Earthquake

TOKYO — A series of earthquakes rattled Tokyo and northeastern Japan on Wednesday evening but caused no apparent damage or injury in the same region hit by last year's devastating tsunami.

The strongest was a magnitude 6.8 that struck off Hokkaido island and generated a small tsunami. Some communities along the northern Pacific coast advised residents to evacuate coastal homes.

A swelling of 20 centimeters (8 inches) was observed in water at the port of Hachinohe in Aomori about an hour after the tremor, with smaller changes seen elsewhere. The Meteorological Agency lifted all tsunami advisories within about 90 minutes.

About 9 p.m. local time, a magnitude-6.1 quake shook buildings in the capital. It was centered just off the coast of Chiba, east of Tokyo, at a rather shallow 15 kilometers (9 miles) deep.

Narita International Airport briefly closed runways for inspection but later resumed operation. Several local train services were suspended for safety checks.

There were no abnormalities reported at nuclear power plants after the two earthquakes, operators said. Nearly all of Japan's nuclear plants are offline for safety inspections.

This past Sunday, Japan marked the first anniversary of the massive magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami that left some 19,000 people dead or missing, wreaked widespread damage along the northeastern coast and triggered the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl. Rebuilding has yet to fully begin in many coastal communities.

Wednesday's temblors were considered aftershocks of last year's massive quake, Meteorological Agency official Akira Nagai told a news conference, warning residents to stay away from buildings already damaged by it and the thousands of aftershocks since.

The town of Otsuchi in Iwate prefecture, where more than 800 died in last year's tsunami, told residents to evacuate coastal households as a precaution after Wednesday's quake, said prefectural disaster management official Shinichi Motoyama. No damage or injury was reported, he said.

Nearly all of the thousands of aftershocks from last year's earthquake have been of minor or moderate strength.

Frightening. I was in a 7.0 earthquake and it knocked me off my feet.

I hope Japan doesn't get another big one for 1000 years!

Unfortunately, Tokyo is long overdue, and because of a significant increase in tremors in the area since the March 11, quake, scientists are predicting a major quake within the next few years.

Good thing 52 of 54 nuclear plants in Japan have already been shut down.

Japan seems to be doing fine without them.

Energy efficiency increases, reduced consumption, and alternative energy sources are a much safer way to go.

LED light bulbs use only 25% of the power compared to a regular bulb. That saves a lot of energy and a lot of money.

"Fudge" from a friend who has been watching REAL CLOSE

Eq and Volcanic activity is thought to intensify this evening to early am.

Japan is Likely to have another large magnitude earthquake early on March 15th, USA time... (6.0+); (+/- 24 hours.) Followed by significant tremors on and into the 19th. With a 80% chance of another large magnitude EQ. (7.0+) Between the 18th and 24th.

The Earthquakes to come are surely going to cripple daichii.
Forewarning...

Time for the Japanese to move off the coast as the instability of magnetic pull will only grow worse this year. Better prepared by the caves of the highest mountains. Pack water from the snows that aren't radioactive and store them in caves of the mountains even if you have to make those storage caves and secure them. have the people start farming on the hillsides and producing crops with 10% going to storage and dehydration for emergency.
Tents, portable heaters or coals to keep cave somewhat warm enough for human life, and make sure there are reserve stores of batteries to keep up with the world's news in case of extreme CME's this year.
Forewarned, and forearmed as well as planning for emergencies, is very necessary now.

I read that this final cycle of the Mayan calendar ends with massive earthquakes... just saying...

the big wall was designed for smaller tital waves not the one that recently hit japan protecting homes. as long as haarp do not strike japan again the waves and earthquakes will go on as normal.

"Narita International Airport briefly closed runways . . . local train services were suspended for safety checks." Earthquake? No problem. The Japanese are incredibly cool.

The story that is not being played up by the U.S. media are long ago, upgraded NRC safety regulations for nuclear power plants that have yet to be implemented. I'm thinking particularly of San Onofre and the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant located on major California fault lines. These reactors are the same design of the reactor at Fukushima. All made by GE. Only taxpayer money was used to insure the building of these reactors. Does it tell you something that no private insurer would touch these projects. Yet the network and news channel coverage of a public at great risk is minimal ...if not non-existent, so great is the corporate pressure to ignore this real danger facing the American public..

when the san andreas lets loose, and it will, the nation will have not only a nuclear nitemare of epic proportions, but the quake damage up and down the coast will be monumental. i was living in san fran. during the loma prieta quake, and that one really wasnt all that big. but most of the city was without power for a couple of days.

* 6.8 * Those Nuclear Plants are doomed, it appears that the Island of Japan has become "unstable"...

the more beautiful the scenery, the more violent and unstable.

After a tsunami, radiation and fallout from damaged nuclear reactor and strong earthquakes, what next horror could befall Japan: Mothra?
04:22 PM on 03/14/2012
High enough doses of radiation.... perhaps mothra, yes...
