Tyshaun Grant, 11, Shot On Chicago's South Side: 9 Others Wounded Citywide

An 11-year-old boy who was playing outside with friends on an unseasonably warm day was shot Tuesday afternoon in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood.

Tyshaun Grant was with friends looking for snakes near West 59th Street and South Stewart Avenue when two men in bandanas fired shots, striking the child in his chest, NBC Chicago reports.

The boy was taken to University of Chicago Comer’s Children’s Hospital, and needs a blood transfusion, according to the Chicago Tribune.

“He’s just a typical child, just playing on a nice day, having fun and he ends up getting shot,” Patricia Island, Tyshaun's grandmother, told NBC. “I just can’t understand why someone would do anything like this. He ain’t nothing but an 11-year-old child.”

The boy's uncle told the Tribune that there is a war going on in Englewood -- which has been plagued by gang violence -- and that Tyshaun "got caught up in it walking with his friends."

"I don't care what time of day it is," he told the paper. "This is a bad neighborhood."

As temperatures reached nearly 70 degrees on Tuesday, the violence continued, primarily on the city's South and West sides.

About 7:30 p.m., a 15-year-old boy was shot in the 7200 block of South Winchester, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. He was listed in serious condition.

The remaining eight shootings occurred within an eight hour period, the Tribune reports. For more on the other incidents click here.
