Obama Energy Policy Speech: President Dismisses Republican Critics On Oil Drilling

AP/The Huffington Post   First Posted: 03/15/2012 12:07 pm Updated: 05/15/2012 5:12 am

LARGO, Md. -- Vigorously defending his policies, President Barack Obama ridiculed critics of renewable energy sources Thursday, calling them naysayers and comparing them to the flat-earthers of yesteryear.

Obama did not mention his detractors by name, merely referring to them as "professional politicians."

But his targets were clear.

"A lot of the folks who are running for a certain office who shall go unnamed, they've been talking down new sources of energy," Obama told a crowd of students at Prince George's Community College in Washington's Maryland suburbs.

"They dismiss wind power. They dismiss solar power. They make jokes about biofuels. They were against raising fuel standards. I guess they like gas-guzzlers," he said. "If some of these folks were around when Columbus set sail, they probably must have been founding members of the flat earth society. They would not believe that the world was round."

One of his most vocal critics recently has been Republican presidential candidate and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has referred to Obama as "President Algae" for speaking of research that one day would allow oil and gas to be developed from algae.

Obama argued that the U.S. is producing more oil than at any time in the past eight years and has quadrupled the number of operating oil rigs.

Republican candidates seeking the White House criticized the sharp rise in gas prices on Obama's watch. The average retail price for a gallon of gas was $3.81 on Wednesday, 50 cents higher than a month ago.

In a Fox News interview shortly before Obama spoke, Mitt Romney said Obama should "absolutely" be held responsible for high gasoline prices because "he has not pursued policies that convince the world that America is going to become energy secure, energy independent."

Romney said Obama has delayed drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico and in a national wildlife refuge in Alaska. He also criticized the president for not going forward with the Keystone oil pipeline from Canada to Texas, and for policies pursued by the Environmental Protection Agency.

"So the world believes that America's not going to have the energy we need and we're going to have to continue to send hundreds of billions of dollars out of our economy, going into other nations" to pay for fuel, instead of tapping domestic resources, Romney said.

Before an enthusiastic audience, Obama argued that drilling for new oil alone would not solve the country's energy problems, let alone lead to lower gas prices at the pump now. Straying from his text, he joked: "We're drilling all over this country. I guess there's some empty spots where we're not drilling. We're not at the national mall. We're not drilling at your house."

He also compared his critics to former President Rutherford B. Hayes, who served from 1877 to 1881, quoting him as having once said about the telephone: "It's a great invention but who would ever want to use one?"

"That's why he's not on Mt. Rushmore," Obama cracked. "Because he was looking backwards, he was not looking forward."

Credit to a post below ... let me see ... Obama says we cannot drill our way out of this and liberals consistently say that oil is sold on the spot market so more domestic drilling won't have any effect on gas prices ... hmmm ... then why is Mr. Obama talking about releasing oil from the strategic reserve ?? 'Splain that one to me Lucy? ... seriously ... really ...

.... I'll be waiting a long long time on this one but lets see what liberal gets the creative response award ... :-)

Want to make technological history analogies? Ok then, Obama is like one of those pre-Wright brothers guys who jumped off a cliff with flimsy paper wings tied to his arms and lands flat on his face. Jumping off a cliff with green technology will land this country flat on its face. The technology may work one day in the future but it's not ready today. You don't jump off a cliff depending on undeveloped technology to save you. You test and plan for years and then take a soft off a gentle sloping sand dune. Now Obama is trying to drag us all off that sharp cliff with paper wings with him. As far as global warming goes, Obama is like those people who used to sacrifice human beings in an attempt to influence the weather gods. Now that's a technological history analogy for you.

Mark Styen rips this "speech" point by point on his faulty claims.

And here I thought he was going to bring us all together. Rather, we get quite the opposite in DIVIDE and CONQUER fashion.

"Fuel of the Past" while claiming "all of the above" (which of course means all EXCEPT more domestic production) ... Obama double speak. Nothing is more evident of his resistance to more domestic independence than his refusal to approve the XL pipeline - killing jobs and creating more demand for middle-eastern oil (that funds govts. who HATE us. Brilliant). He takes us all for dopes when he says production is up under his watch. Technically true but it's because of Clinton and Bush era permitting and the rush for natural gas and new "fracking" technology, which environmentalists hate. So he obviously panders. He says "Decreasing demand" lowers prices , but then claims more production will not? Huh? Supply and demand I agree but maybe he skipped that lecture in economics. "We cannot drill our way out of this ... now matter how much oil we produce ... ) ... Reminds me of "the debate on Global warming is over". He says "drilling is not a plan" yet we import 1/2 our oil. Drilling here keeps jobs and $$'s here. But it's not a plan. His plan? His "fuels of the future" - ignoring the failures of Solendra, ENERL (govt. subsidized battery maker), and GM's SUSPENSION of the VOLT due to LACK OF DEMAND - is : "ALGAE" - I'm not making this up folks. $14m will be invested by Steve Chu's energy department. (continued ... )

Part II ...You know Mr. Chu who famously said he wanted gas prices to reach European standards as this would cut consumption in the US. And you continue to believe OBama isn't European Socialist?? ... Now - SURPIRSE! Mr Chu recants those statements 8 months before the election. How about "There is no crisis" as an energy slogan. So Solendra good and XL pipeline bad, seaweed in our gas tank good but more domestic production bad. Volt good - just ignore it catches on fire and THERE IS NO DEMAND!!! Obama just see's STUPID written on the foreheads of all Americans with his magic glasses I guess ...

This would make a good Saturday Night LIve skit if it wasn't so dangerously real. But I guess the good news for the GOP is this likely will be yet another nail in the proverbial (it's a metaphor and I am not literally asking for Obama to be in a coffin and nailing it shut - just to be clear for all those with NO sense of humor) coffin for his reelection ... I guess it's the price we pay ...

Very true.

I always like to point out that the eDms have run EVERY major city in the US for the last 30 years. SO where are the success stories? I mena why do all the cities they have run for decades lead their respective states in the highest rates for:
-Crime
-Poverty
-Homelessness
-Foreclosures
-Unemployment
-Teen Pregnancy
-HS Drop-outs
-Etc.
-Etc.

And the lowest returns/results on things like education....

But keep voting for them because only they can solve the problems.....

Where is the list of shining cities on the hill that reflect Liberal successes? Instead we get the likes of Detroit.

To the people complaining about how little oil we drill for in the US - Have you ever stopped to look how much oil the US EXPORTS every day? Have you considered having foreign companies, such as BP aren't drilling US oil for America?
Keep all of our drilled oil, kick out foriegn owned oil companies and see if the prices drop. Then talk about drilling for more oil in this country.

Refineries keep closing because their end of the business isn't as profitable as other ventures. So the less oil that gets processed the higher the price and the fewer refineries the more demand for processing so they make more per unit.

Basically the incentives are all perfect for making the price go up.

Refineries are closing because of MASSIVE environmental regulations imposed since they were built and it's too expensive to upgrade to meet the standards yet the govt. hasn't allowed any new refineries in 20 years.

I don't believe Obama is out to destroy this country. I do believe at his core he is
a socialist and a radical environmentalist who is a true believer in green/renewal energy sources. Consider how much the US could invest - I'm all for investment - in these future sources if the interest on 16b of debt didn't take such a huge chunk of the annual spending budget. We borrow to pay debt - can you imagine how long any business or household would last if they borrowed money to pay the interest - no
principle reduction - on money they borrowed ?? borrowing money to pay interest on borrowed money is the definition of economic suicide ... kick the can and expect a miracle to happen is how Congress operates ...

U.S. oil exports are 1.6 million barrels a day, according to a recent Reuters report.

By contrast, we import something like 13 MMbbl (13 million barrels) daily.

The reasons are economic and politics. We are now a net exporter (export more than we import) of Natural Gas thanks to new technologies (that Obama and environmentalist hate and are trying to shut down )

Wrong. Environmentalists don't hate natural gas. What we hate is when you turn on your faucet and fire comes out. Until the natural gas extractors can work out that particular bug nobody who cares about private property rights (and the plummeting value of homes whose faucets are hot running fire) should be for natural gas extraction. Of course, the party who claims to be all about private property (the republicans) are all for nat-gas extraction and could care less about those people whose faucets run fire. I mean, they're American's. Screw 'em (seems to be the republican philosophy). They'd never recommend that the owners of their party (the Chinese) have to put up with fire coming out of their faucets!!!!!

Let me explain ... he is "guilty of promoting alternative energy" that does not yet exist, at the expense of existing energy and doing it smack dab in the middle of a global depression that is just starting. Therein lies the problem. I like pancakes too but I don't fill the bedroom with them.

Your premise that "alternative energy doesn't exist" is flawed. I used to work in an Army hospital and on the roof of that hospital we had solar panels and they supplied all the power we needed to power the hospital as well as many of the buildings nearby in our fort. I know that alternative energy actually exists. It may or may not be as efficient or cheap as existing sources. They are only efficient and cheap because they are heavily subsidized. If solar was subsidized half as much as oil it would be cheap enough for everyone to have solar panels and be selling energy back to the grid.

Just because we can, want, and do live the way we do ( Driving fuel wasting vehicles burning too much fuel, going for long drives which is a national pastime, all the wasteful short trips to stores just for some little want not need, trucks, cars, jetskis, boats, motorcycles, snowmobiles, 4 wheelers, airplanes, how many other things that are WANTS that waste fuel can you think of ....OH MY !) doesn't mean we have the right , should continue to piss away the natural resources that we have. Remember, I'm not just quoting an ol' saying because it's popular but more so because it's practical. We are going to HAVE to learn to adapt our ways or pay the price, litterally, that's just reallity no matter who or where you are. There is no "ONE " solution just as Oil is not the answer either, which means we are going to have to utilize solar, wind, hydroelectric, atlernative oil( bio-fuels) as well as anyother new technology we can develop in addition to conservation in order to adapt OR we can continue to bang our heads against the wall til it sinks in that " just because we did it a certain way all this time, doesn't mean we will be able to continue to do so ".

If drilling for more oil is not the answer to high fuel prices, why is Obama prepared to release oil from the strategic petroleum reserve to increase the supply of oil, which he says will lower the price of gas? This man is an enigma.

America enjoys some of the LOWEST gas prices compared with most other industrial nations. Look and see what the British or the Germans pay at the pump. America is 5% of the worlds population but believe that they have the god given right to use 30% of the worlds resources....then they don´t even want to pay what others have to. Instead of crying about gas not being free, why don´t you trade in all your SUV´s?....make one trip less to Wal-Mart or 7-Eleven to pick up the gallon size bottle of Coke.
09:20 AM on 03/16/2012
I hope you will take the time to check your statistics before believing Mr Obama....... since 1979 the US has had the ability to be 100% self-sufficient with regards to our available oil supply... if we chose to collect it! Because of the political benefit (meaning our congressmen/women are using tax payers money to buy good standing in world politics) we block the access to this oil under the lie of environmental responsibility. Economics 101 lesson for you here..... we are graced with lower prices in the US because of our use... Supply and Demand!!! The margins (price less cost) per unit is greater where the use/demand is lesser... .pretty simply to understand.
There is absolutely no reason ( the endless rhetoric of limited oil and air pollution can stop, its over blown!) to raise prices to force the US public to act the way you or Mr Obama want..... if there were GREAT or even GOOD alternative energy sources to replace oil the marketplace and concerning American dollar would follow.... I would love to have a solar panel that would provide my electric to my house at a lesser cost (US restrictions force our reliance on imported materials)....
cont.....

There are several good alternatives available. Algae based fuels (yes already viable and in production), hydrogen (water derived and in use in europe), solar, wind, wave/sea/current. Millions of homes in China have solar hot water heating........ There is at least one European country near to going 100% clean....... How about geothermal where possible??? The thing is that the large corporate infrastructure in this and many other nations is too greedy in the short term and doesn't want to invest and change. That would be fine if they didn't have such a bribery based grip on our legislature (especially the right wing). Legislation and grants are bought and sold in their favor behind closed doors everyday!

Your argument would make more sense if oil wasn't heavily, heavily subsidized. You can't compare the heavily subsidized oil market to the not-so-heavily subsidized alternative energy market and compare a unit of one to a unit of the other. The oil market is too heavily subsidized for anything else to compete on the same level.

Europe has the luxury of good train service and walkable cities and towns. Americans live in places where you have to drive 10 miles to get a gallon of milk. We really need to change the way we live at a basic level and it's not even part of the conversation yet.

Libshateme = Mymomhatesme.. People were really "suffering" over high gas prices when the Bush and the Dick were stinking up the White House. Gas prices were higher near the end of old Curious George's limit, than they are today. And that is not even adjusting for inflation.

And what are you babbling about the President ridiculing the middle class? Is that the new directive handed down from your masters at the RNC? Attention all minions: Go forth and spew as many lies as your limited minds can conjure! You're a waste of air space...
