From Mother Nature Network's Morieka Johnson:

If your pet suffers from arthritis, prescription medication isn’t the only solution. Holistic options such as acupuncture, chiropractic medicine and rehabilitative therapy can reduce the need for medication, while significantly improving your pet’s quality of life. Veterinarians Evelyn Orenbuch and Susan Wynn offer information about greener treatment options for arthritic pets.

"Just getting the joints to move, a lot of time, decreases the pain and increases joint fluid," says Orenbuch, a veterinarian certified in chiropractic and canine rehabilitative therapy. At Georgia Veterinary Rehab, her state-of-the-art facility, four-legged patients get laser therapy and massages or undergo low-impact rehab sessions on an underwater treadmill. Treatment options focus on increasing flexibility and strength while decreasing pain.

When pets struggle with arthritis, Orenbuch frequently recommends a solution that begins at home: Keep pets active and monitor their weight. It's no secret that extra pounds add pressure to joints, but fat cells also carry other hidden dangers.

"The more fat you have, the more inflammation you have," says Orenbuch, president of the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians. "If you've got a joint that's inflamed, even more of the inflammation and inflammatory factors tend to find their way there."

Interactive toys, extended playtime and healthy treats can help your pet drop excess pounds and relieve achy joints. If helping your pet lose weight is on your to-do list, here are some helpful tips. It's an important and inexpensive first step in treating arthritis.

Three bouts of Lyme disease caused arthritis in our BC's back legs. Border Collies also tend to tear their knees with the way they run, stop on a dime, or turn suddenly. He's now almost eleven, and he's been getting Laser treatments for both ailments. We've had the same vet for almost 30 years and each of ourl four dogs...he's up to date on all the latest. The monthly Laser treatments are painless, and seem to be helping.

As a veterinarian who treats a lot of arthritic pets, here's my protocol:
1) Keep the pet slim. I cannot stress enough how important this is
2) Supplement with high doses of Omega-3 fish oil. A fifty pound dog needs about 3,000 mg daily. Dogs don't absorb Flax Oil well.
3) Supplement with glucosamine/chondroitin
4) If those things aren't enough, then start them on NSAIDS. There are many now that are safe and effective for long-term use.

An old horse trainer taught me something long ago. I had a horrible migraine and he put a towel on my neck and rubbed it like he would a horse, firm creating heat (which increases circulation). Temporary vanished the headache. He said horses get headaches too and that's how he helped his animal.

My cat is around 76 in cat years. Healthy, happy and beautiful He absolutely loves kitty massage, even the paws are worked. He will get them sometimes several times a day. Why go to someone and pay for what is easily done at home? We also have our catnip grooming. He loves brushing, combing, rubing into his fur then brushing it out. I also put a chair in front of the door on sunny days and he gets his heat, vitamin D and view since he's no longer an outside cat. Times he will come to my bath and have me wet his fur as well, so that he can groom better. He's such a good animal, if one of us is sick, he's our caretaker. I still find it odd that he could tell the second that I had an occular migraine and came and sat on my chest, and left when it had gone away. We can learn so much from them.

Pet insurance is ok, but I save even more, I couple it with Pet Assure. Really happy with it.
