Tom Corbett, Pennsylvania Governor, On Ultrasound Mandate: Just 'Close Your Eyes'

Posted: 03/15/2012 4:33 pm

During a discussion of a far-reaching mandatory ultrasound bill, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett (R) on Wednesday dismissed off-handedly the insinuation that the measure goes too far, saying, "You just have to close your eyes."

Corbett reaffirmed his support for the "Women's Right to Know" Act, which would require doctors to perform an ultrasound on a patient, offer her two personalized copies of the image and play and describe fetal heartbeat in detail before she can have an abortion -- "as long as it's not obtrusive."

He did not indicate whether or not he considered a transvaginal ultrasound to be an intrusive procedure, which the bill would require doctors to perform on a woman whose fetus is not developed enough to be visible by a regular, "jelly-on-the-belly" ultrasound.

Asked if he thinks the bill goes too far to make a woman look at the ultrasound image, Corbett responded, "You can't make anybody watch, okay? Because you just have to close your eyes. As long as it's on the exterior and not the interior."

Pennsylvania's ultrasound bill, unlike the revised version passed in Virginia, does not specify a type of ultrasound, so the doctor will have to use an "interior" procedure for most first-trimester abortions in order to meet the requirements of the law.

Even if the woman opts to "close [her] eyes," as Corbett suggests, the doctor will have to turn the ultrasound image toward her face, give her two signed copies of the printed image, describe the number of heartbeats per minute and tell her if that's normal or not for a fetus of that age. She then has to wait 24 hours and bring all the signed paperwork and both ultrasound images to her abortion doctor in order to have the procedure legally, and the doctor has to repeat to her the age of the fetus.

The Pennsylvania House postponed a scheduled vote on the bill this week because of "concerns raised by the medical community, among others," according to House Majority Leader Mike Turzai (R).

Patrick Murphy, a Democratic candidate for attorney general, called Corbett's comments "disturbingly offensive" and demanded that he apologize to Pennsylvania women.

"It's bad enough that Governor Corbett wants to force women to get an unnecessary and invasive procedure as a means of getting a government permission slip to undergo legal medical care," he said in a statement. "It's worse yet that he wants to shame them by shoving an ultrasound screen in their face. But it's unthinkable that he would so casually dismiss this by advising women to just close their eyes."

I doubt the good Governor is well enough read to appreciate the irony of his words. "Just close your eyes and think of England," was reportedly the advice given to women during the Victorian era when having to "endure" their husband's attentions. And they say we've come so far.

ENOUGH !!! We are not children and will not be treated as such. We WILL make our own medical decisions, we  Read More...

The last thing we need is less choice about our own lives. I'm sure given half a chance he'd love to have everyone conform to his own beliefs and think as he thinks.

But free will and a free world means something different, and a man in such a position of power should not force his belief systems on the entire world. This is besides the idea that an ultrasound technician can do a lot more help for the world and improve patient care, instead of wasting professional medical time with red tape. Just look at http://modernultrasoundtechnician.com to see that their job can have far better uses than forcing unwanted peer pressure onto patients.

Women should just 'close their eyes?'
Why not advise them to 'lie back and enjoy it'? Damn.

With the statics concerning the number of woman and girls that are raped each year in this country, it seems he takes it as a challenge to bring the percentage up to 100%. I suggest we send him into general population of the nearest prison for a week and then make the following prostrate exam mandatory. Just bend over and close your eyes!

I don't even know what to say to any woman who would vote for any of these misogynist creeps in the GOP.

A woman who would vote for them really has to be full of self-loathing.

If a woman does not have to look, then what is the purpose of this procedure? Just to placate persons in the right to life movement? I found his remarks enlightening as you know he is one more man who has never had the experience of having someone in his life be in a terrible position of chosing to end a pregnancy.

Doonesbury has the right idea about all that blackmail watching and rape. 3/16/2012:

1st panel:

Doctor: "Miss, to help you make an informed decision, the Texas GOP requires you to have an intimate encounter with your fetus."

2nd panel:

Doctor: "Accordingly, by law, I am required to discuss the physical features of your fetus in real time." (As opposed to what? Virtual time?)

3rd panel:

Doctor: "Okay, let's see. That dot there could be a lung but don't hold me to that. And that's a leg, and that speck may be genitals."

4th panel:

Doctor: "Shall I describe its hopes and dreams?"
Patient: "If it wants to be the next Rick Perry, I've already made up my mind."

Thank you so much for posting the link. It definitely needs to be read. We need to contact AMA, and tell them get their thumbs out of where they sit down, and start protesting the illegal demand of their violation of the Hippocratic Oath. They took an oath to do no harm to their patients, and people are their patients not fetuses.

Governor Corbett should submit to a colonoscopy, live on the 6 o'clock news for everybody to see where his brains are located.

How about instead of telling women to "close their eyes" we tell these politicians to bend over and spread 'em.

If they feel comfortable undergoing a "transpenile" ultrasound (and yes, it *would* go through that opening) every time they have unprotected sex without intention to impregnate their wives (or in the case of many politicians, their mistresses, secretaries, interns, housekeepers, etc.) then they have my personal blessing to enforce such a demeaning procedure on women.

But somehow I suspect this won't be the case.

you are really confused if you think Obama wants to change our life in the same way that this type of legislature does...
11:36 PM on 03/19/2012
The audacity of Obama working to force the greedy private sector health insurance industry to sell actual affordable health care to the general population, plus, instead of paying out only 20%-30% on benefits, they must use 80% of the premium money to benefit those paying for the insurance. Plus, include birth control medication as part of any health care insurance plan. Obama has the gall to abide by his constitutional oath and ensure the constitutional rights of females. How much more oppressive is it going to get under Obama? Watch out for them commies they're under every bush and bed.

I am astounded at the number of people who actually didn’t know that W was eroding our constitutional rights for 8 years in direct violation of his constitutional oath. Now the same people to happy with W doing that expect Obama to do the same as long as it doesn’t affect them.

Today the theocratic fascists say 'close your eyes' in regards to ultrasound probes. They will say the same thing tomorrow when they attempt to repeal the nineteenth amendment ( women's right to vote ).

Michigan is starting down this slippery slope with the passage of an asinine law outlawing "coerced" abortions. WTH? If the state REALLY cared about women they would also have outlawed "coerced" pregnancy too.

This is crap and if my fellow women don't get out and vote en masse, we deserve what we get.
