'Awake': Clues From One World Solve Rex's Kidnapping In The Other

Last week, viewers were teased with the possibility that the red world (Hannah's world) might be the real one, but Michael spent more time and energy dealing with problems in the green world (Rex's world) on this week's installment of "Awake" (Thu., 10 p.m. ET on NBC). That's because an old case erupted in a bad way in the green world when John Cooper, a man he'd helped arrest and convict for murder, escaped and kidnapped Michael's son.

"Awake" seems to be in no hurry to push its mythology forward. Instead, this week the focus was on using Michael's unique perspective in parallel worlds to move a single case forward and solve it.

Green world Cooper coordinated a meet where he insisted Michael help exonerate him in exchange for the location of his son, but the police shot Cooper dead before he could reveal anything. By this time it was getting late, so Michael went home and took some sleeping pills to force himself into the red world.

This time, rather than work two similar cases, Michael was working the same case in both worlds. In the red world, he blew off his wife and a fundraiser event in Rex's memory to work on saving green world Rex. Red world John Cooper was still alive and still in prison, and had his own idea on who'd set him up: Michael's old partner.

Michael got a confession from his partner, leading to his arrest in the red world, and got the location of the building in the desert where Rex was in the green world, saving him just in time. The charity event had been very good for Hannah's grieving process, while being kidnapped had actually helped Rex accept his mother's loss as well. Just before getting kidnapped, he'd confessed to Tara that he sometimes wished that his father had died and his mother had lived instead, even though he knew Michael was really trying.

So the episode was mostly about Hannah and Rex taking positive steps in their grief of one another, and Michael intentionally using his ability to travel between worlds to solve a single case. The question is, will he go back to the green world and arrest his old partner all over again?

"Awake" continues it's 13-episode inaugural season Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
