What Happens To Your Body When You Binge Drink On St. Patrick's Day

Posted: 03/16/2012 2:55 pm EDT

By Dr. Natasha Turner for Blisstree.com

If you are doing a countdown to St. Patrick's Day on your calendar with images of pints and shots dancing in your head, you may want to consider the effects that night of binge drinking will do on your body first. While drinking moderately has many documented benefits, a night of too-heavy drinking can have negative consequences on your liver, brain function, immune system and of course, belly fat.

While alcohol is a known stress for your liver, what many people may not know that as a result, it can affect everything from body composition and skin health to allergies and PMS. Since the liver breaks down estrogen, alcohol consumption, drug use, a fatty liver, liver disease and any other factor that impairs healthy liver function can spur an estrogen build-up.

In fact, research shows that even one alcohol drink can spark an increase in estrogen production. Your liver must continually metabolize, detoxify and excrete hormone breakdown products via the bile into the digestive tract for removal from the body at an optimal rate. If you want to try to prevent this spike in estrogen with boozing, take a high potency B complex containing folic acid before you drink and when you come, home, along with two large glasses of water.

Just smoke up. That's the kind of green that keeps St. Pat's fun.

Why wasn't unbridled joy on the list? Biased article. Where are the stats on diabetes prevention and potential HDL boosts? You would be surprised of the benefits of the sweet sauce.

You are correct about the benefits of moderate drinking but the article is talking about binge drinking.

Define binge drinking. 6 beers at a time? 6 beers in 6 hours? 6 beers in an hour?

the Centers for Disease Control defines binge drinking as 5 or more drinks for a man and 4 or more drinks for a woman in a 2 hour period.
11:53 AM on 03/17/2012
Sounds like if you drink to get drunk you are a binge drinker?
01:16 PM on 03/18/2012
basically if you drink to get a light buzz (5 beers in 2 hours) you're a binge drinker

I can't think of a more stupid article I have ever read in all of Huff Post in years. This takes the cake. People DIE from binge drinking!!!!!!!

what makes this article stupid? It is saying you shouldn't binge drink.

I'd like the idiots who wrote this to go to "Shelby's Rules" to really learn what happens with binge dringing.

Go to shelby's Rules and find out the truth and then see if you want to binge drink.

Personally I know I'll spend today at a BBQ, tossing the football around and probably drinking around 12 or so beers over the course of the day. By definition that is binge drinking. I'll be moderately buzzed by around midnight. Sounds like a great day to me.

Most people who binge drink DO NOT DIE. This is a pretty obvious fact, or else most of us would be dead.

it's fun to have fun but you have to know how
09:04 AM on 03/17/2012
for me 1 drink occasionally feels great....2 is kinda drunk..and can feel some negative side effects...eh I'm a light weight....same for caffiene....two drinks and I am flying

the advantage of being not on drugs is hopefully you learn to feel good without drugs and when on occasion you do drugs ...aka alcohol, caffience...they really really work and you don't need or want much.....I feel sorry for the alcoholic who can't practice moderation.....well I'm extremely moderate in the drinking area....my vice....God I like girls a lot

Me too. I can drink wine pretty well, but hard alcohol is not my friend. If I have anything more than two (and that, slowly and with food) I am (a) very drunk and (b) going to have a vicious, lengthy hangover for the next forty-eight hours.

My hard alcohol intake confines itself to the occasional high-end margarita at places that have lengthy tequila lists and that's about it. Although I have, on occasion, and after a really bad day, gone to the liquor store and bought two airline-sized bottles of cognac and imbibed them both and gotten ripped. I don't do that very often, though--maybe once a year or so.

You get drunk, that's what happens and if you do it to long it has long term consequences just like smoking. Everybody knows that give it a rest. It's still a choice, at least for now.

Not everybody knows the harmful effects of consuming too much alcohol. Why don't you give it a rest?

the captainpoco postdrinking ritual.

step 1) before going out prepare a chocolate protein shake and put in fridge, place a pint of water on nightstand along with a pack of ibuprofen.
step 2) drink
step 3) spend 15 minutes trying to open front door
step 4) drink shake and pint of water. when glass is empty fill again and place back on nightstand.
step 5) wake up, usually 5am, take 2 ibuprofen and a few gulps of water, go back to sleep
step 6) get up when you are ready, more water and a good breakfast.

It works for me. I cannot be held responsible for any harm, loss of property, damage or injury to self or others resulting in following my stup!d advice. All comments provided for entertainment purposes only, drink responsibly and don't drink cheap v0dka it tastes like s**t.
