Sydney Levy, 15, and Nick Romano, 17, were surfing in two separate locations on New Smyrna Beach on March 14 when the sharks clamped their jaws down on parts of their legs, WFTV News reports.

Sydney was longboarding with her mother, Valeh, when a shark bit her ankle and pulled her underwater several times.

"To me it was like a scene out of “Jaws” where the girl is getting sucked under and I said there is no way this thing is going to kill my daughter," Valeh Levy told CBS Miami.

Levy said she grabbed her daughter and pulled on her onto her board, while she called out for help.

Just yards away, Romano was also fending off a shark that had bitten his calf while he was sitting on his surfboard.

The 17-year-old received about 17 stitches, CBS News reports.

Officials cleared beachgoers from the water, but at least one witness said some people weren't too happy about it.

"A lot of people didn't want to come out because it's pretty good out there," Jared Smith told WFTV News.

Both teens were sent home Wednesday night and are recovering from their injuries.

But to Nick, the incident still seems surreal.

"Every surfer always thinks, 'One day I'm going to get bit by a shark.' Well, today was my day," he told CBS News.

On Thursday, authorities reported another shark attack in Jensen Beach, according to NBC Miami. An unidentified man was bitten several times on the arm, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

It's amazing how egocentric we are... we move to the mountains and bitch about MOUNTAIN lions... we jump in the OCEAN and call for the hides of SHARKS. Folks. We're in THEIR environment. Do grizzly bears come to your accounting firm and settle into the kitchen with their morning coffee? Good lord. When you move to the jungle, you don't get to complain about monkeys... people. Sigh.

They are called shark accidents, not attacks. The water is so murky, they don't know what they are going after. Definately not some scrawny human.

Man, in 1985 I was surfing off the Daytona Beach pier on a really choppy day and after hearing screams from the fishermen above and looked ahead, me and another guys so the shape of a 8 (9? 10?) foot tiger shark outline on the crest of a wave not but twenty feet from us.

Usually you need SOME shape of a wave to move forward on a surfboard. On that day the waves were more like white caps and little else. I rode one of those white caps all the way to the shore in a way that to this day seems like a miracle.

Fast forward some twenty years later. Surfing in Malibu. There was an unusual case of a young male great white bull that was breechig the water for no reason near Sunset beach ( if some of you may recall. It was in the news) Well, that very day, that very same great white
shark breeached about 30 feet from where we were surfing. And all I could think off, besides getting out of the water, was how incredibly awful would be that the last thing you would smell in life was the stench of a sharks breath, which is you have been near one you know how strong and aweful it is.

Since then...I am just waiting to get back to the Canaries...No sharks, warmer clear water and peace.

If the sharks really wanted to eat these people, they'd be dead.

Not always, but very often, sharks will bump their intended prey before attacking. If one is aware, and can punch the shark at that same time, the shark will swim away. The nose and eyes should be the target of choice, but any contact will likely discourage the shark.

In other news, the Chinese continue to kill 100 million sharks a year.

Another shark doing his thing and everyone wants to stay out of the water, leaving the ocean and the waves empty and uncrowded. Ah, too bad the hysteria only lasts a few days ; )

Time to go to South Carolina instead. For you who want to get bit and were upset about leaving the water good luck. Not to bright so you will need it.

He should have said "not *too* bright". And he meant luck. Try reading it like that one more time.

It is a fact that in florida you are 38 times more likely to be killed by a lightning strike that a shark. I know these folks did not die but 2 incidents that close at the same time is very rare. I wonder what time of day is was and how clear that water was. Sharks tend to bite more when they can't see....there are alot of other factors that would increase the odds of being attacked, this story is very short nd there are no details. Great job Huff.

Thanks for the satistics, its often difficult to determine the location, much less the factual numbers, local tourist minded governments list a city or beach by name not found on any map or web search. I have often pondered the safety issue of a beach where fishing and swimming are both permitted, throwing bait in waters inhabited by swimmers and both obviously conscience of each other is really beyond stupid. Several bits of information gained by yours and others comments, I know standing in knee deep does not excuse from attack. been bumped before.

Surfline website has a fantastic system where all the locations are marked with the amount of shark attacks/danger level in the spot you want to go.

I used to go to countyline all the time. Loved that placed. The one day I checked it out on the map and saw that, of all beaches in LA County, THAT one had the highest ranking for shark attacks in the area.

Sort of kill the joy after that.

With my luck, just 1 bite or death in 15 years would be enough for me to stay out of the water.

I prefer Lake Havasu or Lake Mead for playing in the water, no sharks in those waters. LOL

I live in FL and our lakes have alligators! So, I have to pick the better of 2 evils. The moral of this story "I don't swim" LOL
