Julian Assange Australia Senate Run Announced

By ROD McGUIRK 03/17/12 09:13 AM ET AP

Julian Assange Senate

CANBERRA, Australia -- WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange plans to run for a seat in the Australian Senate in elections due next year despite being under virtual house arrest in England and facing sex crime allegations in Sweden, the group said Saturday.

The 40-year-old Australian citizen is fighting extradition to Sweden. He has taken his legal battle all the way to Britain's Supreme Court, which is expected to rule on his case soon.

"We have discovered that it is possible for Julian Assange to run for the Australian Senate while detained. Julian has decided to run," WikiLeaks announced on Twitter.

Assange has criticized Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard's center-left government for not standing up for him against the potential threat of his extradition to the United States for prosecution over WikiLeaks' release of hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. documents.

Australian police have concluded that WikiLeaks and Assange have not broken any Australian laws by publishing the U.S. cables, although Gillard has condemned the action as "grossly irresponsible."

John Wanna, an Australian National University political scientist, said it was possible for Assange to run for a Senate seat if he remains on the Australian electoral roll despite living overseas for several years.

"If he gets on the roll, then he can stand as long as he's solvent and not in jail and not insane," Wanna said.

Being convicted of a crime punishable under Australian law by 12 months or more in prison can disqualify a person from running for the Australian Parliament for the duration of the sentence, even if it is suspended.

Constitutional lawyer George Williams of the University of New South Wales said that provision of the constitution has never been tested in the courts in the 111-year history of the Australian federation and probably would not apply to a criminal conviction in a foreign country such as Sweden.

"I'm not aware of an impediment to him standing, even if he was convicted," Williams said.

Any adult Australian citizen can run for the Australian Parliament, but few succeed without the backing of a major political party. Only one of Australia's 76 current senators does not represent a party.

Every Australian election attracts candidates who have little hope of winning and use their campaigns to seek publicity for various political or commercial causes.

Wanna said the odds are against Assange winning a seat, but that he could receive more than 4 percent of the votes in his nominated state because of his high profile. At that threshold, candidates can claim more than $2 per vote from the government to offset their campaign expenses. Assange's bill to the taxpayer could reach hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The next Senate election cannot be called before July 2013 and is due around August. Candidates cannot officially register as candidates until the election is called at least a month before the poll date.

Assange's mother, Christine Assange, a professional puppeteer from rural Queensland state, said Saturday she had yet to discuss her son's political bid with him.

She criticized what she called the government's willingness to put its defense treaty with the United States ahead of the rights of an Australian citizen.

"The No. 1 issue at the next election regardless of who you vote for is democracy in this country – whether or not we're just a state of the U.S. and whether or not our citizens are going to be just handed over as a sacrifice to the U.S. alliance," she said.

"(Christine Assange) criticized what she called the government's willingness to put its defense treaty with the United States ahead of the rights of an Australian citizen."

That to me is a rather narrow and subjective view of the matter.  Her son might be famous but he is just one Australian citizen among millions.  Like her son, she sounds as if she expects the Australian gov't to drop  Read More...

Well, if he wins, that country will be like an open book. I would actually like to see how that works out. What if a country totally disclosed everything about everything to everyone all the time? Interesting indeed.

the point Assange was trying to make and which is the point of his organization is NOT that every single information has to be known. The point is that citizens in a democratic country have to know the motives and goals of their political, such as why we go to war or how we treat those we invade and how internally things work. It is called transparency. one third of your income goes to a government that use it to kill people for reasons you dont understand, nor are likely to benefit from.

I do agree with that. I would like to see way more transparency within these governments. Can you imaging what we would be reading if a country like china suddenly became transparent and released old stuff. That would be insane. I actually thought what he was doing was both crazy and interesting. I am really surprised he wasn't killed for what he did. The worst they could come up with is some weird charges about something with some women or something.

We wish Assange victory at the polls. He is a great man and along with Bradley Manning should be the Mascots of the American Forces, whom they have saved from unnecessary wars of greed and the resultant increase in body bags of US Servicemen. After the Wikileaks, which showed the real truth, the Iraqui leadership , who are stooges of the US did not have the guts to allow uS Forces to remain in Iraq after the withdrawal date, because they would not want to answer to Iraqui law. that saved many American GI's from death in that land. Also revlations of Wikileaks put a damper on US Forces worldwide and hopefully would lead to a reduction in overseas meddling of the US, again saving US lives. Actually, Americans should honour Assange and Bradley Manning and they should be given the Nobel Peace Prize for saving the planet from more wars and more deaths.

If the Australian Senate is anything like the American senate, if elected he'll be rendered impotent just like Hilary wanted; only a whole lot richer.

I'm content on having him stay on house arrest for the rest of his life....without internet or computer access! It would send him over the edge...where he belongs.

Some people refuse to see what a hypocrite he is. He releases information at his leisure. He refuses to release any information about himself. He only targets the US. He has a real agenda and he has all the unintelligent lemmings fooled. What a shame.

But we arent relying on him to run our business. His background seems of little consequence. The message is more important that the messanger in this case. We pay the US government to run things. Thats once of the differences. So, no

This documentary reiterates the importance of an organization like Wikileaks, since the corporate run and owned press has morphed into a mouthpiece for banksters, transnational corporations, the oil industry, the MIC, the arms industry and corrupted governments, globally.

Figured one of Mr. Assange's staunch advocates would come to his offense. Unfortunately, I can't oblige your request, as I relish the anonymity of the internet. But trust me when I tell you, I'm a total babe.

I really don't think i'd bother Mr. Assange !
I believe that most of us are smart enough to see this for what it is........a none too subtle tilt at offsetting your expenses, combined with an exercise to see more of your name in the media.

I'm not so sure. A choice between Dillard, Dr No and Assange? That's a bloody tough call really. I'm currently at the point of voting for anyone apart from the first two, the only worse thing would be to have to choose between the muppets in the Democrat race. Shudder at the thought.

Think Assange would nominate from Qld......for Senate, not Reps, so Gillard and Abbott arn't on the same ballot.
I guess he would be up against the likes of George Brandis, Ludwig and Joyce. Don't know the other three......Greens have one, I think.
I don't think he would make it, but perhaps a bit more life into the election.

Psst....have you ever heard him speak....?

Well We all know who participated in the "scam war", the nations and such. Most of Nato is looking beyond the immediate riches in Afghanistan developement for the elite and the drug trade.

Russia and China don't want that type of business, and the laundering through the Federal Reserve that got caught in England by Lord Blackheath, has them NOT wanting to trust the Republican Warmongers, messing with their oil supplier Iran. This would be interferring in the national interest of those two major players. This is why they shouldn't push this President with drumbeats of war. Just like the NDAA, if the Republican Tea Party Congress gets a President, there will be no stopping the Neocons from another "ill advised adventure in resource theft of other nations."

The craps to funky to hide, and its all coming out.

Revelations?
