Perry argues with everything the fed says, except when it comes to giving him money with no strings. He loved the stimulus, but balked when the fed wanted to give TX money specifically for teachers a year later. He thinks that the Fed should have paid for wildfire *prevention* instead of waiting for the fires, and complains bitterly when FEMA wants specific provisions, like their paperwork before they come and help. He complains when the government withholds funds for healthcare because the fed thinks that women who use Planned Parenthood as their medical provider should still have access to it. He complains about how the Feds protect the border and then complains when the border patrol won't accept his requests for serious weapons. Voter rights? He forgets the fact that Texas *earned* each and every investigation into civil rights and wants the money that supports Texans' justice to be applied only to himself and his perception of right and wrong. Seriously, he can almost make a Texan Dem *miss* W. as governor, who was certainly Machievelli's ideal Prince.

It might come as a real surprise to Ricky P but many people in this country don't fly, don't drive, don't have checking accounts and don't have library cards (which don't require photo ID anyway, at least where I live)- they do however have the right to vote as determined by the Constitution which I have read and re-read and can't find the photo ID requirement anywhere.

ALEC mandates that voter ID's are now mandatory and our bought and paid for GOP Governors are jumping thru hoops to give them what they want. Everyone seems to forget the simple fact - voting is a right. Time for the citizens to stand up to their elected officials and vote them out ASAP.

The whole scope of the Koch Bros. ALEC is wide spread regulations to disenfranchise voters, get rid of product liabilitiy laws and essentially outlaw unemployment by dicriminatory practices to the unemployed, breaking all unions, public and private, and to get rid of the minimum wage, amongst many other inititives. State legislators who don't know squat about governing are taking these generic bills, rewritting them for their state, and in many cases can't argue for or against the bill cause they are doing what they are told. Any state legislator who espouses ALEC inititives should be voted out.

Knowing the law of unintended consequenses even some conservative scholars are predicting that these laws will result in the Federal Government controlling all elections involving the House, Senate and Presidency and will further result in all voters having a national Identity Card or Chip.

Over the years, the legal right to vote has been extended from males with property to every citizen of age excepting felons (Amendments 13-14-15) and turning felons into non citizens is not universal among the states. Justice Roberts, among others, has testified under oath that the right to vote is our basic right that all the others flow from. People who vote are saying this is our country. As they expect to be represented, they have a vested interest in the success and good order of our country.

Making it more difficult and complicated to vote with the idea of turning citizen residents away at the polls not only goes against a basic American principle. It implies that the party that does it has decided that lying doesn't do enough for them.

Nicely said. And given the incredibly low rate of voter fraud and the relatively high rate of organized fraud being caught one must ask if additional restrictions validate making voting more difficult.

Right to vote is a Federal Government mandate and can't be denied just because an ID Card. Drivers licenses, Library Cards, College or University ID Card are not Federal Government mandate as it is a Citizen Passport

Besides the only one time when voting fraud are reported is when Republican want to protect their candidates in certain areas, counties or States and they do so by oppresing the voters or denying the access to the poll. I hope you State of Texas do not protect your seat when that time comes

Did Texas ever have a poll tax? Literacy testing before ballot authorization? Denial of colored vote?

If you'd read some of your own history, perhaps you'd understand why the federal government is concerned with your Voter ID' law.

When states rights interfere with civil rights, states rights take a back seat. We are all in this together...Texas can't just pick and choose who they want to accept as citizen voter.

the state where college students can't use their school ID to vote but a non-photo concealed gun permit is pretty good enough ID.
