Disposable Film Festival Returns To San Francisco (VIDEO)

What The Heck Is The Disposable Film Fest?

San Francisco has never been short on innovation, and the Disposable Film Festival -- coming to the Castro Theatre this Thursday night -- is no exception.

Founded right here in SF, the Disposable Film Festival features a staggering collection of international short films made on cell phones, pocket point-and-shoot cameras, webcams and other everyday, non-professional and inexpensive equipment -- what festival organizers call "the democratization of cinema."

And while a festival of iPhone videos may sound a bit self-indulgent (or at least a little boring), the DFF shorts are anything but.

Last year, featured films included "Thrush," a embarrassingly relatable comedy about relationships, breakups and Facebook stalking; "Indoor God," a photo tribute to growing pot; and "Paper Memories," a stop-motion film about loss and the loneliness of aging. All are under eight minutes long.

Watch a few of last year's standouts in our video slideshow below, and check out the Disposable Film Festival at the Castro Theatre on Thursday night:
