DNC Says GOP Candidates Would Let Health Companies Discriminate Against Women

The Democratic National Committee released a new ad on Monday painting Republican opposition to the Affordable Care Act as an attack on women's health. The web video touts the law's prohibition on "gender rating," a practice that allows health insurance companies to charge women up to 50 percent higher rates than men for the same coverage. Repealing the law, it claims, "would put insurance companies back in charge of women's health."

The four remaining Republican presidential candidates have all pledged to repeal the health care reform law, and the ad uses clips of Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, and Newt Gingrich making that vow. Doing so, the ad says, would "[keep] gender discrimination in place."

The ad pivots off the Sandra Fluke controversy and congressional fight over contraception access, both of which appear to have given Republicans problems with female voters. The New York Times reported on March 10 on Republican women who are now leaning towards voting for President Barack Obama because of Republicans' stances on reproductive issues.
