Metro Unveils New Map For 'Rush-Plus' Service Change

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, which is preparing to deploy a modified rush-hour service pattern for the Orange, Blue and Yellow lines in June, has unveiled the agency's new Metrorail diagram.

The new service pattern, which will divert trains originating from the Franconia-Springfield terminal away from the crowded Rosslyn junction via the Yellow Line's Potomac River bridge, will decrease the number of Blue Line trains between Virginia and the District of Columbia.

To compensate, Metro will increase the number of Orange Line trains running through Rosslyn, sending the additional trains to the Blue Line's Largo Town Center terminal. These Orange Line trains will eventually be replaced by Silver Line trains when the new Metrorail extension to Tysons Corner and Reston opens.

According to the transit agency, congestion will be reduced in parts of the system -- especially the Orange Line -- and service will be increased at 17 stations. And since the Yellow Line will be extended to the Green Line's Greenbelt terminal, there will an additional service linking Maryland, D.C. and Virginia.

The rail diagram simplifies some long station names by creating a base name with subnames that will appear in a smaller typeface. For instance, the "U St/African-Amer Civil War Mem'l/Cardozo" station, will become "U Street" with "African-Amer Civil War Mem'l/Cardozo" appearing beneath the base name.
