North Platte, Nebraska Tornadoes Damage Homes

First Posted: 03/19/2012 8:29 am Updated: 03/19/2012 8:29 am

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — Severe weather in the Midwest spawned at least two tornadoes in central Nebraska that damaged homes and derailed train cars.

Bill Taylor of the National Weather Service says two tornadoes hit Sunday night on the western side of North Platte, Neb., and damaged several homes. In one of those homes, a person who was trapped and injured was rescued.

Taylor says at least 15 train cars there derailed.

Elsewhere, Taylor says a possible tornado damaged homes north of Valentine, Neb., in northern Nebraska and southern South Dakota.

In western Oklahoma, possible tornadoes damaged electrical power lines when they touched down. No injuries were immediately reported.

Taylor says the weather is expected to move east Monday, affecting areas from eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, and as far south as Texas.

Where have you been for the last 200 years, or however long they have been keeping records? Tornadoes are common in the spring and fall, anywhere, but mainly in tornado alley, running NS in the center of the US.

I certainly hope I never get to meet the fury of nature. Picks up houses, trees, trains like toys.

Nothing to do with climate change, just nature showing man that he is not in control of anything.

Good thing there's no such thing as climate change otherwise the weather would really be getting weird. Oh wait, it is!

Tornadoes and 'climate change' have nothing at all to do with one another....you democrats continue to provide the rest of us with a lot of hoots.

Sorry, but I grew up south of North Plate, Neraska. In the 50's and 60's we had so many tornados it was hard to keep count. We got them on clear days where we could/would sit in lawn chairs and watch them roam around the country side North West of town. As a teenager we would chase them on the dirt roads in the country. The house I grew up in was built where a prior house had been destroyed by a tornado. If anything there have been a reduced number of bad storms since the 60's.

It will be eventful that's for sure.

The main thing about the summer here in PA, it was so hot last year you could hardly ever go outside, and THIS year, with a really warm winter, will the summer be even hotter? Last summer you had to go out to go grocery shopping at 12 midnight, and a few times it was STILL in the 80's at MIDNIGHT!
11:55 PM on 03/19/2012
I work on a nj farm during the summer months, so believe me I am constantly feeling the heat. And not looking forward to it this year, either. I've seen some wild thunderstorms even, where it nearly had a tree take out my boss's transformer to his house, which would have been disastrous.

In all my years of living on the northeast I've never seen thunderstorms so crazy then what we saw last year. I can't help but love it though.

Powerful weather. In a few weeks ago, the weather was real cold at the time when a lightening flashed once. Thought it was very strange to see one in 30s temperature. I suppose the global warming effects are not over yet.

I've seen lightning strikes many times during snow storms and I'm live in a mountain valley that has only seen one tornado in my 54 years on the planet.

I'm about 100 miles from that. Had the severe weather predicted where I am, but thankfully it didn't develop. These tornadoes can be nasty things.

I wish the president would create a tornado czar and regulate tornados. Heck, if he can do all the other stuff he says he can do, outlawing a tornado should be nothing!

Wow, you Progressive Liberals are so dense and gulable. I will give the Democratic Spin Doctors high marks for taking Katrina and spinning it into a Republican disaster. Before I retired I was a FEMA Certified Disaster Recovery Supervisor. According to the U.S. Constitution, the Federal Government can do nothing in a state like Louisiana unless they are asked to or declare Marshall Law. Bush could do nothing, that is N O T H I N G till he was asked by the Governor of Louisiana. The Governor (D) and New Orleans Mayor (D), didn't ask for help till they were so far under water no one could help them. In rushes the Democratic Spin Doctors with orders to shift the blame from the Governor (D) and Mayor(D) to Washington DC. They were masters. Now if you doubt that Washington could have done better than the Governor & Mayor, look at Gulf Port Mississippi and Biloxi Mississippi. Because there are Military Bases in both communities, the Feds need no invite and both communities faired far better than New Orleans and the rest of Louisiana. Both communities have a working plan with the military to get their cities up and running ASAP.

Approaching New Orleasn today you can see the destruction still starting in Biloxi. In N.O houses are rotting as far as eye can see, trees are down, rubbish everywhere, streets are in horrendous condition. Yes indeed, who did not clean after Katrina...

Remember what Ron Paul's supporters shouted when talking about people with no insurance? "Let 'em die!" I expect that is your opinion in this case as well.
01:28 PM on 03/19/2012
You have no idea as to what my thoughts are on anything Ron Paul has said. No, I have no idea about anything Ron Paul said. So, make your utterly foolish assumptions and prove, once again, how gullible you and others like you are.
