Sydney Harbour Bridge Celebrates Its 80th Birthday (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: Happy 80th Birthday, Sydney Harbour Bridge!

Happy birthday to the Sydney Harbour Bridge! The structure known as The Coathanger turns the big 8-0 March 19.

Construction began on the span in 1923, and involved 1,400 workers and 52,800 tons of steel. At 1,149 meters long, it is listed in the "Guinness World Records" book as the world's widest long-span bridge, according to ABC Australia.

When the bridge opened in 1932, it cost only one cent to cross on horseback, writes The Daily Telegraph. Today, a trip across can cost $3, and horses are not permitted. Modern visitors can also climb the bridge for a more adventurous crossing.

A 1930s-themed picnic, to be held underneath the bridge at Bradfield Park, will commemorate the occasion. Throwback activities will include vintage fashion shows, vintage auto displays and big band music.

To add to the celebration, we've compiled a list of iconic bridges around the globe. Do you have a particular favorite? Add it to the slideshow below.
