Singapore is spending $400 million on a new International Cruise Terminal that will increase its capacity to host visiting ships. The new terminal, which will join an existing cruise port currently under renovation, should open before the end of 2012, according to a recent announcement from the Singapore Tourism Board.

In 2011, the Asian city-state saw nearly a million cruise passengers at the existing Singapore Cruise Centre, and the new facility will allow bigger ships to visit, among them Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas, the Costa Deliziosa, a ship operated by beleaguered Costa Cruises and two ships from Celebrity.

Located near the Marina Bay Sands resort, the new terminal is between downtown Singapore and the resort island of Sentosa.

Officials say that disembarking passengers will have access to the city's excellent public transportation network and will only have to travel 30 minutes to Singapore's well-regarded airport.
