Lori Anne Madison, 6-Year-Old Spelling Bee Champion, Out-Spells FOX Reporter (VIDEO)

Posted: 03/22/2012 1:59 pm Updated: 03/23/2012 1:57 am

Well, that's a-w-k-w-a-r-d.

A 6-year-old girl went head-to-head with a FOX 5 reporter during an in-studio spelling bee. And let's just say it wasn't pretty.

Earlier this month, Lori Anne Madison became the youngest student to qualify for the Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee. The eloquent Virginia native beat 21 elementary and middle school students in a county competition to gain entrance into the prestigious contest.

So when FOX 5 local reporter Paul Raphel summoned her to a match, Lori Anne was more than up for the challenge.

The first word went to Lori Anne, who correctly spelled "okapi" without hesitation. Raphel, on the other hand, wasn't so confident as he stumbled through his word: "tourniquet."

"T-e-r-n-i-c-h-e-," he inquires.

"Not even close," says the mediator.

To be fair, maybe compression bandages aren't Raphel's strong suit. But can the reporter redeem himself? Head over to MyFoxDC.com or watch the video (at 1:30) above to find out.

Via Babble.

CORRECTION: In an earlier version of this story, Lori Anne Madison's middle name was misspelled.

And this proves what, exactly? This 6 year old could probably out-spell some adults on any tv station. Also, you DO realize that this channel is owned by the same company as Fox News Network, but isn't actually FNN, don't you? You didn't? No surprise here. LOL

The title of this article says it all...no sarcastic comment necessary.

Fox5 - the 5 is the IQ level of the reporters. Just don't tell them, it'll shatter their confidence. This was impromptu, there was no time to make fake news.
'next on Fox 5, a little girl writes answers on her hand'. 'wait are we reporting on Palin?"

I am familiar with several species of mollusk that can out-spell Fox News reporters. A 6 year old has too much of an edge in my opinion.

Hey there HuffPo peeps. Any of you watch Family Guy? The Simpsons? NFL Football? THAT'S the network this guy works for. He is not in ANY way attached to Fox News.
Did you get that? There's a BIG difference.
Again, your proud embrace of total ignorance gives us all something to laugh at...thanks, Libs!

The reporter works for Fox News - it's a Fox News channel, owned by Fox, they pay his check, so your proud embrace of being totally clueless shows us that you must watch a lot of Fox and are totally uninformed. Thanks moron!

And we were suppose to think that a FOX News reporter could actually spell?

Awesome job. Horrah!

Great job, God bless her.

she doesnt need spell check, like all you bloggers do. she can outspell all of us for sure

It's easy to see this little girl can not only spell well, but she is highly intelligent too. Her speaking skills and command of language is more advanced that some adults I know.

The FOX reporter had to be misspelling these words on purpose; he was not even in the ballpark on the words that he was asked to spell. (And no affront to this brilliant little girl, but let's not forget that back in 1992 there was another child that out-spelled then U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle. Although I am pretty confident that Lori Anne Madison could easily do the same.)
09:13 PM on 03/25/2012
Well a lot of people could outspell VP Quayle and there were even some Americans who could actually pronounce the word NUCLEAR while W ran the country but I did notice that some Fox reporters started using nucular and oddly enough when W was gone, they went back to saying nuclear!

Couldn't miss the chance to mention FOX.....OMG Huff you are amazing. never miss a chance at propaganda. Good on you girl, great job. As a matter of fact she not only spells great, she speaks off the cuff better than hmmmmmm......no teleprompter needed.
09:14 PM on 03/25/2012
How is that propaganda? Yes good on the girl, one of the few kids still being educated in America. Not one of the "all children left behind" you remember, the one started by the one who used the teleprompter before the present one? The one who couldn't even pronounce NUCLEAR? I am sure you were sleeping during those 8 years.

IGNORANCE ABOUNDS!!!!! I don't think spelling is the issue here. If you all could READ, you would realize that this isn't POLITICAL! Congratulations little girl, you have just become smarter than most of the people on this post.
03:42 PM on 03/23/2012
DOn't kid yourself. people understand that... What many sound off about is how HP never misses an oportunity to, insinuate, suggest, subtly or perhaps blatently, portray Fox and their affliates in an unfavorable light... no matter wether it's political or what topic. And their bloggers line up rank and file and do the goose step right behind

Nobody needs to throw a bad light on the Murdoch Empire. The Feed Our Xenophobia notnews, WSJ, WND, etc. continually cast themselves in the pall of ignorance and deceit.

Well I can't imagine, say, Brian Williams missing those words, or certainly not so badly. Surely not every 6 year old could do that, but rthe average 5th grader in my community could clearly outspell this reporter.
