City Creek, Mormon Shopping Mall, Boasts Flame-Shooting Fountains, Biblical Splendor (Photos)

City Creek Mall
City Creek Center in Salt Lake City, Utah

Need some Jesus with your jeggings? Head to Salt Lake City.

On Thursday morning, City Creek Center, the first indoor mall built in nearly three years, opened its doors to the public. Its owner is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which hopes that the $1.5 billion temple of consumption will redeem Salt Lake City's blighted downtown, where the Church is also headquartered.

The 700,000-square-foot mall certainly gives off a Biblical air. According to its website, City Creek has two 18-foot waterfalls, fountains that shoot water and bursts of flame while playing synchronized music, a fully retractable glass roof (the first outside of Dubai) and a man-made recreation of the south fork of City Creek, the mountain stream where, in 1847, Mormon pioneer Brigham Young founded the settlement that would later become Salt Lake City.

It is a mall fit for a president -- and might even be graced by one some day if Mitt Romney, one of the Church's most famous members, can score the Republican nomination. City Creek is located just across the street from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' headquarters, the Temple Square complex. The stores, which include Tiffany & Co., Coach, Nordstrom, Porsche Design, H&M and Macy's will all be closed on Sunday. No restaurants will serve alcohol, save for the Cheesecake Factory and Texas de Brazil. There are no bars.

It has been years since any developer, private or otherwise, has backed such a grand project, given the bleak retail landscape. The last indoor mall built in the U.S., Crystals at CityCenter, opened in Las Vegas in 2009. Since, more malls have been foreclosed on than have opened, with shoppers cutting back on spending and chain stores downsizing.

So far, City Creek looks like an exception. Two thousand people paid $50 to attend the opening gala Wednesday night, while crowds started to line up on the nearby Main St. at 2:00 a.m. in preparation for Thursday's 10:00 a.m. opening. Ninety-two percent of the mall's space is already leased.

The Church has an enviable partner in the venture: Taubman Properties, the Detroit-based owner of some of the world's most successful luxury malls. Taubman, which developed the property and leases the underlying land from the Church, invested $76 million on top of the estimated $1.5 billion in cash that the Church gave to the project.

The Church's money came from City Creek Reserve Inc., a private real estate company it owns. According to the Church, all the money was raised through private business ventures, and none from the 10 percent of income Mormons are required donate, or tithe, to the Church.

With City Creek, Mormons have a new way of showing financial devotion. Through its rental contract with Taubman, the Church gets a percentage of mall revenue -- and its fortunes rise and fall depending on sales.

City Creek shoppers can rest assured that their purchases -- a $535 Porsche Design tobacco pipe, perhaps? -- will bring them a little closer to God, or at least Temple Square.

Pride cometh before the fall. If a 'religion' building a multi-billion dollar shopping mall isnt a sign of outright hubris I dont know what is. Imagine the scorn that would be heaped on Catholics if they built a shopping mall. Mormons are too engulfed in their victimhood complex they are force fed to even see how ridiculous the leaders of mormonism are behaving in their name.

And the richest of the followers can put in tens of millions to elect Mitt Romnent, the leftover mormon who running out of duty --- any fool can see he has no passion to actually be President, and other republicans

Latest entertaining video on that, including more references to the mormon church, which seems totally willing to risk the reputations of all its members to get more power.

Even more entertaining. Here is one of the few clips with Mitt talking with (or arguing at) a radio host about the CoJCoLDS. Jump to about 15:35 to hear Mitt talking about Jesus returning to Missouri to rule.

What was it that Jesus said? something about GIVE ALL YOUR MONEY to the poor. I wonder how a church building a shopping mall to MAKE MORE MONEY FOR THEMSELVES fits in with the belief system of Christianity. Once again, evidence that Mormonism is NOT a religion, it's a prosperity cult.

So you just want to ingor all of the Charity work that the Mormons do because they built a mall? They want to bring more people to the state. I have heard many times people complainig because there isn't anything nice, or "high end" enough for people outside of Utah. Well here they are starting to change that. Why should it matter who is paying for it? Are you a Mormon? Do you donate to the Mormon Church? Probably not so why cry about what they do with thier money?

"all of the Charity work that the Mormons do" HAHAHA.
All of the charity work the church does, comes from individual church members. Total financial aid donated by the church is only a fraction of 1% of the income they bring in. The church does very little in financial support of those in need.

Jesus said, "Sell ALL you have and give it to the poor."
So tell me, since you are an expert on Mormon charity work, HOW MUCH MONEY does the church give to the poor, each year?

That new mall is helping to create a vibrant city, it is creating jobs. Everyone in the city is benefiting. What are YOU doing to support and build your community?

P.S. SLC is minority Mormon, so all those non Mormons are benefiting as well.;)

So, fountains and fire give something a "Biblical air?" I guess that makes the Mirage in Las Vegas a regular bible camp! Because fire and water are mentioned in the bible, then any use of those images is "biblical?" So, the Koran (or any number of literary works) then, would also be "bible-themed?" What hogwash.

The LDS Church's decision to use its resources (not from religious donations) to help revitalize downtown Salt Lake City is a legitimate issue for discussion. Building a mall is bit unusual for a Church. On the other hand, millions visit LDS Church headquarters in downtown Salt Lake City each year, and a vital city is a good thing for the community. That is a discussion to have, but the snarky tone and ridiculous, uninformed claims make this post laughable.

Just important to remind everyone how weird and sinister the CoJCoLDS chruch is...

My City Creek Center experience fits perfectly with this view, especially the heavy armed security presence.
12:10 PM on 03/26/2012
Are you suggesting that the security guards carry guns? Or do you just mean that they actually have arms (and legs)? You are either a liar or not at all precise in the way you use language.

I read that article in slate magazine and obviously the writer is following the same line about Joseph Smith and Church history that too many fall prey to. It's sad that this individual uses Brodie as having more credibility than the great LDS historian Dr. Michael Quinn. Also a more moderate LDS historian is Dr. Richard Bushman who wrote Rough Stone Rolling. That was a great history of Joseph Smith. When I see these extreme views written by Fawn Brodie and the typical "money digger" kinds of allegations against Joseph Smith I realize that these folks really have not done the hard work that it takes to get a balanced review of history. Also the "authorities" and police of upstate New York during the time of Joseph Smith arrested Joseph for crazy charges like his preaching a book other than the Bible. That's a vastly different story from what is alleged by Brodie and others.

Wow!! What a lot of hateful comments. Seems to me that if you like the mall you should shop there. If you don't, find somewhere else to shop. If you believe the teachings of The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints you should worship there, if you don't, you should find another religion and quit bashing on others beliefs. All this hateful negative incorrect talk is pretty pathetic. If you don't like it, just find another mall or find another church. It is that simple!

You know, if mormons had not invited a world of scorn upon themselves with NOM and Prop 8, no one would think it OK to make fun of them

I THINK SOMEONE CALLED JESUS INVITED FOLKS TO FOLLOW HIM,
NOT TO PAINT THEMSELVES UP AS SAINTS
AND TRY TO CONTROL OTHER FOLKS

People have been bashing Mormons for a long time. Long before Prop 8. Liberals just like to BASH and COMPLAIN about people who don't share thier idea's or believe what they believe.

I am not a member of any Church but know people who belong to many different denomintions, live and let live is my approch and ALL of my Mormon, Catholic, Christian (a few different Christian churches), and the few Jewish folks I know (I live in Utah, not many Jews here) agree with me on that.

You should visit the LDS hospital, Primary Childrens hospital, and the Hunstmen Cancer Institute if you want to see some of the more "charitable" causes that the Mormons partake in.

Criminently - why all the venom? Jealousy? hatefulness? what does your church do to help the economy and the neighborhood .. a few meals to the street folk? OH, you don't GO to church .. well THAT would explain a lot .. so, get over your stingy selves ...
the author is obviouslly bigoted and looking for favor by being an ass ,,,, and got it ... all this attention must be so flattering.
I am not a Mormon ... or gay or les or homeless .. I just think that they are using money wisely .. and it's theirs! YOU didn't give one thin dime to this project so your nasty comments are wasted breath.

I already experienced mormons shooting flames of pure hatred in the Prop 8 commercials in California -- and you know which part of the body you shot them from.

I cancelled all business dealings with any firm in Utah, as I did not care to see my money go toward hatred disguised as religious morality.

THE MORMON LEADERS ARE DEATHLY AFRAID OF MOVING PAST 1950, AS IT MIGHT CAUSE A LOSS OF MEMBERSHIP, AND THUS REVENUE.

It might be good for everyone to know that the terms "momo" is in all likelihood your perjorative term from Mormons. Maybe you could also try some other usernames like, "jews-r-idiots" or "muslimssuck." You get the idea. I chose not use religious slurs in these examples, but feel free to modify as you feel comfortable.

"morhole" tends to fit the mormon sense of perspective better, not to mention the sense of humor, or the level of caring whom they hurt
--- you could take it as describing the actions of members in a culture, not as religious prejudice.

Maybe you can tell me which of your profits said "You see some classes of the human family that are black, uncouth, uncomely, disagreeable and low in their habits, wild, and seemingly deprived of nearly all the blessings of the intelligence that is generally bestowed upon mankind..."
