WATCH: Metro Removes Dupont Circle Escalators

WASHINGTON -- Although the south entrance to the Red Line's Dupont Circle station remains closed, Metro officials are keeping would-be passengers updated with video proof that work rebuilding the entrance is moving along -- on schedule, no less.

Want to see? Here's video of construction crews working early Wednesday morning, removing sections of the entrance's escalators piece by piece.

The three escalators will be removed in seven different large pieces. It's not an easy job.

The escalators at the Dupont south entrance are 188 feet in length, according to Metro. Each piece then travels on "three separate cranes on its journey off the work site," according to the transit agency.

Even on schedule, the entrance is expected to be closed into the fall.
