Richard Hanna, GOP Congressman, Tells Women To Give Their Money To Democrats

Posted: 03/22/2012 3:40 pm

Richard Hanna

As the only Republican Congressman at a rally for the Equal Rights Amendment on Thursday, Rep. Richard Hanna (R-N.Y.) gave women an unexpected piece of advice: Give your money to Democrats.

"I think these are very precarious times for women, it seems. So many of your rights are under assault," he told the crowd of mostly women. "I'll tell you this: Contribute your money to people who speak out on your behalf, because the other side -- my side -- has a lot of it. And you need to send your own message. You need to remind people that you vote, you matter, and that they can't succeed without your help."

The Equal Rights Amendment, which Congress passed in 1972 but has not yet been ratified by the necessary 38 states, simply says that equality under the law "shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex." Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) reintroduced the legislation this year in hopes that it would finally become a part of the Constitution.

"If equality had been enshrined in the Constitution for these past 40 years, I wonder if we would still be hearing today from right-wing presidential contenders that women should not serve in combat, that women should think twice before they seek to work outside of the house, that women should not use birth control, and that women who do are called names that are not fit to repeat here," Maloney said at the rally.

Hanna, a pro-choice Republican and co-sponsor of the Equal Rights Amendment, acknowledged that women's continuing fight for equality is meeting some resistance among his Republican colleagues. He urged women to become more politically active on their own behalf.

"This is a dogfight, it's a fistfight, and you have all the cards," he said. "I can only tell you to get out there and use them. Tell the other women, the other 51 percent of the population, to kick in a few of their bucks. Make it matter, get out there, get on TV, advertise, talk about this. The fact that you want [the ERA] is evidence that you deserve it and you need it."

When HuffPost asked Hanna after the rally whether he was bucking his party by encouraging women to give their money to "the other side," he said that he wasn't.

"I'm trying to help [the GOP]," he said. "I think it's the appropriate thing to do."

ONE reasonable republican on one issue is not enough, their party, whoch has become the scourge of the world, should be annihilated, thank you. they should fracture apart, teabaggers, fiscal wall street crooks, born again fruitcakes, should go separate ways

I WANT TO MAKE A POINT ABOUT THE MIDDLE CLASS, WHICH IS A MISNOMER. THE MIDDLE IS NOW A MILLIONAIRE, NOT LIKE ROMNEY, BUT LESS THAN FIVE MILLION SINCE THERE ARE BILLIONAIRES GALORE, THE MIDDLE IS MUCH HIGHER UP ON THE INCOME SCALE AS THE ONCE MIDDLE AND LOWER MIDDLE ARE NOW THE LOWER CLASSES SINCE THEY ARE SO DISTANT FROM THE BILLIONAIRES, THE LOWER MILLIONAIRES ARE NOW THE MIDDLE. SORRY TO BURST ANYONES BUBBLE, BUT ITS TRUE, DO THE MATH. WE ARE THE LOWER CLASSES, LITERALLY AND THE RICH WANT US TO SERVE THEM, BUT TO NEVER THINK WE ARE THEIR EQUAL, IT MAKES THEM FEEL BETTER ABOUT THEMSELVES

jeannine garafolo, where are when we need you most. weigh in on the unjust wars that americans are so damn proud of. i hope to see the day that american becomes great again, meaning just and moral, not a country that thinks its okay to commit crimes as long as you get rich, and invade other countries cause somebody has to pay for a few buildings coming down. our response was wrong, as only a bush can be, and immoral. he is a war criminal for crimes against humanity and cannot leave the us for fear of being apprehended. but we protect that thing as if he had anything to do with me or you, hes an abomination, iahve to stop using biblical words, i dont believe a word in that stupid fariry tale book. i believe that when people start believing in reality, and live life rather than prepare for an afterlife that isnt going to happen, then we, as a people, will believe in each other, and that is when mankind will prosper. as long as there is religion, there will be war. the doomsayers, who want the end to come in their lifetime so they can believe the stories from the book. a book? people live their life from an old book? they talk about how the devil can do x, y, and z? you say g-d is the creator, all powerful, then how can the devil challenge his power if he created the planets?

democratic congressmen dont fall in line, they dont obey as if under command, they are compelled by their passions, their issues. when you see people falling into line, who in history do you think of? there was a Reich that was hellbent on making sure everyone fell into line. can anyone think of that party? they had a supreme leader, they started unnecessary wars, like bush, and were responsible for the deaths of many, like bush. the similarities of the two parties are striking... it's a fascination with absolute power, its dangerous and can spring up like mushrooms after a rain, which is why you have to call attention to the danger...

It must be working. Today. 03/27/12, I heard a die hard Okie Republican state this.
"Obama will keep the White house, the Democrats will take over the Senate and add more to Congress".

Everyone is saying "a good Republican" .. well no, he is someone who used to be a Republican who is simply being honest. He will never win an election as a Republican again. The new GOP mandate is if you don't come down directly on party lines on every issue you are a liberal.

good republican sounds like an oxymoron, lol. i would respect a republican if they didnt have that plantation mentality of follow the leader. bucking the party over one issue isnt enough. lets see one republican take on the 1930's type of party they run today, dangerous, corporate shills, misogynistic, colonial mentality seeking to rule over other, entitled to wage endless wars without rhyme or reason, should i go on? tax breaks for their rich friends, if that isnt crony capitalism, not to mention a free pass for wall street. if they get into power, they will unleash wall street for another bubble and another disaster

I love this so much, I could just squeeze Hanna's little cheeks until they're all pink and blushing. The more women are encouraged to activism, the better. The more the GOP is encouraged to reform, the better. Thank you, Rep. Hanna!

Just teared up reading this, what with it being so difficult to find any human decency in the GOP.
01:55 PM on 03/25/2012
cant ask hyenas to be mans best friend, they are viscous, inhuman members of the bush party, who wage illegal wars preemptively, no morals, base in their nature but they believe in some carpenter, that he will save them from evil, lol, what a farce

Seems we just found the last decent, honest Republican with his integrity still intact. He'll be an independent in no time at all.
02:05 PM on 03/25/2012
right, soon all republicans will be as low as limbaugh, without conscience, pathological liars, most of them, like mcconnell, a lowlife who lies without missing a beat, his kind should be eradicated in the name of decency. they will be the reactionary party, they are NOT the party of lincoln

last comment tonite: we, as a people, survived bush, his cooked up wars, his corruption, his generosity towards the rich and his contempt for the lower classes and those whom he sent to their deaths. yes, bush sent our people to their deaths by invading a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. he never lost a wink of sleep, he slept like a baby when people on both sides died for no good reason. he's obviously akin to a serial killer, with no conscience, no character, and nothing human about him. barack obama is a great president in comparison, and im not ashamed to be an american during these times.
