Trayvon Martin Case: Teen's Friends Say He Never Picked A Fight

By CHRISTINE ARMARIO 03/23/12 11:40 PM ET AP

Trayvon Martin

MIAMI — Wearing a hoodie. Listening to music and talking on his cellphone. Picking up Skittles for his soon-to-be stepbrother. Friends say that's how they would have imagined 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on a Sunday afternoon.

Starting a fight? Possibly high on drugs and up to no good? No, friends say that description of Martin from the neighborhood crime-watch volunteer who shot and killed the unarmed black teenager doesn't match the young man they knew.

"There's no way I can believe that, because he's not a confrontational kid," said Jerome Horton, who was one of Martin's former football coaches and knew him since he was about 5. "It just wouldn't happen. That's just not that kid."

Martin was slain in the town of Sanford on Feb. 26 in a shooting that has set off a nationwide furor over race and justice. Neighborhood crime-watch captain George Zimmerman, whose father is white and mother is Hispanic, claimed self-defense and has not been arrested, though state and federal authorities are still investigating.

Since his death, Martin's name and photographs – in football jerseys, smiling alongside a baby, and staring into the camera in a gray hoodie – have been held up by civil rights leaders and at rallies stretching from Miami to New York demanding Zimmerman's arrest.

On Friday, President Barack Obama called the shooting a tragedy, vowed to get to the bottom of the case, and added: "When I think about this boy, I think about my own kids."

That sentiment was echoed by NBA star by Dwyane Wade, who along with his Miami Heat teammate LeBron James tweeted photos of themselves in hoodies in a show of solidarity.

"As a father, this hits home," said Wade, who has 10- and 4-year-old sons.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson said Friday that Martin's killing reflects "the classic struggle of our time" and said it echoes the slaying of Emmitt Till, a 14-year-old from Chicago who was murdered in 1954 while visiting Mississippi by a group of white men. No one was ever convicted, but Till's killing galvanized the civil rights movement.

Jackson said he will speak at a Sanford-area church Sunday and then attend a rally in the city Monday.

An Orlando criminal defense attorney who says he represents Zimmerson told CNN on Friday that his client isn't racist and the facts will show he acted in self-defense after a fight with the teen.

"I don't believe that George Zimmerman's a racist or that this was motivated by a dislike for African-Americans," said Craig Sonner.

Since the slaying, a portrait has emerged of Martin as a laid-back young man who loved sports, was extremely close to his father, liked to crack jokes with friends and, according to a lawyer for his family, had never been in trouble with the law.

The son of divorced parents, he grew up in working-class neighborhoods north of Miami's downtown. He and his father, a truck driver, were active in the Miramar Optimist Club, an organization that runs sports and academic programs for young people. Tracy Martin, the teen's father, coached his son's football team.

The boy was a swift athlete, according to a friend, and played a range of positions up to about age 14. After he stopped playing, he remained active in the organization, volunteering six days a week from June through November of last year to help run the team's concession stand.

Martin cooked hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken wings alongside his father at the stand. He loved talking to the kids, asking them what position they played and whether they were good, Horton recalled. He would call the mothers "Ma'am," and if they had a stroller or an item they needed help with, Martin stepped in.

"Everyone out there loved him," Horton said.

Martin was tall and lanky – only 140 pounds, according to the family's attorney – and his nickname was "Slimm."

The teen spent a big part of his week living with his father in a one-story, peach-colored home. Neighbor Fred Collins Jr. said he would see Trayvon Martin outside every week mowing the lawn and trimming the trees. The teen also helped Collins' son learn how to ride a bike.

"He was coaching him, giving him words of advice, encouragement," Collins said.

No one answered the door on a recent afternoon, and a child's plastic tricycle sat in the driveway.

Tracy Martin often recounted how his son saved his life. The elder Martin had begun heating up some oil to fry fish and fell asleep. The grease caught fire, and when Tracy Martin awoke and tried to put out the flames, he spilled the oil on his legs, severely burning himself. Trayvon Martin pulled his father out of the home and called 911.

Martin's parents kept a close eye on him, but they didn't have to be too strict, since he stayed out of trouble, Collins said. However, he had recently been suspended from school for five days for tardiness, his English teacher, Michelle Kypriss, told the Orlando Sentinel. School officials did not respond to a request for comment.

Martin's father was not happy and grounded the teen for the duration of the suspension.

Trayvon "knew he was wrong," Horton said.

Under state privacy law, only serious felonies appear on juveniles' public criminal records, and Martin did not have one. Citing the same law, Sanford police Sgt. David Morgenstern said he could neither confirm nor deny the family's statement that Martin had never gotten in legal trouble.

Martin dreamed of becoming a pilot. He had flown on school vacations to various places around the country with his mother, skiing in Colorado one year, going off to Texas another.

"There's no little black kids that want to be pilots," Horton joked with him when he was about 13.

"Well, I'll be the first one," the teen replied.

At Dr. Michael M. Krop High School, where Martin was a junior, he was on the quiet side, but he would sit in the middle of the classroom, participate in class and especially liked math.

Schoolmates remembered his humorous side.

"Brrrrian!" he would call out, rolling his r's as is done in Spanish, whenever 16-year-old Brian Paz got a phone call from his Colombian mother, the friend recalled.

"I'd just burst out laughing," Paz said.

Paz and other friends said Martin liked rap music and funny movies. He had written some lyrics, though he hadn't had a chance yet to perform them. Martin was especially a fan of a student musical group at his school called Bison. He had two of the group's pins on his backpack and helped spread the word about shows.

John Emmanuel, 17, said the group was about encouraging young men to be strong, independent leaders.

"That's how we liked to think of ourselves," Emmanuel said.

Martin had gone up to Sanford to visit his father's fiance, who lived there with her young son. Friends said Martin regarded the boy as his little brother and had been looking forward to watching the NBA All-Star game with him that weekend.

On that Sunday, Martin went out to get candy and an iced tea at a convenience store and was walking back to the fiancee's townhouse. Zimmerman, 28, spotted him and told a police dispatcher: "This guy looks like he is up to no good – he is on drugs or something."

After the shooting, Zimmerman claimed that Martin attacked him as he was returning to his truck.

But Martin's friends said they find that hard to believe. They said they had never seen him fight at all.

"As far as attacking the guy without him attacking him, no way," Horton said.

Okay, this is so beside the point, what the boy decided to do with his teeth. He is DEAD! Don't you freakin get it man! He's DEAD and you are focusing on BS like that! His murderer didn't have a scratch on him and the med examiner said that there was nothing on Trevons body to show that the "scuffle" insued. So what exactly is your point????
07:12 PM on 03/27/2012
Absolutely disgusted at this criminal act by the neighborhood watch captain. Police clearly told him not to follow the young man. Even if his account of being attacked aftern continuing to follow the young man is true (which I seriously doubt), he was nearly committing stalking and aggrivated coersion towards the young man. Zimmerman's acts were a blatant disregard for instructions from trained law enforcement officials. Anything that occurred after that, leading to this child's death is completely a result of Zimmerman's refusal to obey law enforcements immediate instructions. To the birds with the 'Stand-Your-Ground' law arguments...what authoriity did he have to continue his pursuit and harassment of this young man? He should be charged with criminal trespassing, harassment, assualt, insighting violence, enticing a minor, and at least volunatry manslaughter. He needs to do at least five to 12 years for those charges. However, he may never get to see trial with the outrage his actions have stirred. I am praying for Mr. Zimmerman, his family, and of course the family of Trayvon Martin (R.I.P.).

I see the pushback has begun since news have leaked regarding Trayvon's suspension on marijuana possession. And the Zimmerman apologists are grasping. First of all, I see that different standards are being applied. No one said Trayvon was a choir boy; how many of you believe that suburban kids aren't doing marijuana or much worse? And how many of these kids haven't gone out at night just to go to the store in their own neighborhood (or where they were visiting)? How many have wound up dead? And what does a school suspension have to do with what occurred that night.

If Trayvon stood his ground and fought against a 200-plus man following him without authority, then he was well within his rights to do that. I am a woman and I would have fought against someone following me. Trayvon had no obligation to ID himself to a stranger. Zimmerman had no authority to follow and engage.

Outside of the race issue, this is an ostensible example of an overzealous man, who may have had innocuous intentions, but whose actions brought about a tragic end.

Wow - that leader of the Black Panthers is on CNN. He is one scary MF'er. He's not interested in anything but vengence -- for ALL black deaths. This whole situation could get very dangerous...nothing would surprise me.

BTW: why can't black people correctly pronounce police? Why do they say PO-lice?!?!

“These are the facts of this case Zimmerman while on neighborhood watch spotted a black male walk through his gated community. He called the police non emergency number and reported this to the police stating that the person was acting funny and must be on drugs. Zimmerman began to follow Martin on foot and was told by the dispatcher that he shouldn’t do that… Zimmerman continued….Martin was on the phone with his girlfriend and she stated that Martin told her that he was being followed. she heard Martin ask someone “Hey why are you following me?” she then heard a male voice ask “what are you doing here?” then the phone went dead. Zimmerman stated that Martin attacked him and he tried to flee back to his truck. He stated that he was knocked down by Martin causing the gash to the rear of his head. Zimmerman stated that Martin then started beating him , breaking his nose a witness saw this happen, at this point many neighbors called 911 to report that someone was screaming for help, on one of the 911 calls you can clearly hear Zimmerman repeatedly screaming for help and then a gunshot. A witness saw this happen. Zimmerman stated that he shot Martin while he was on top of him beating him…the police conducted a complete investigation including crime scene and detectives…due to witness statement corroborating Zimmerman statement he was not arrested at the scene but a grand jury is pending …”

Yes that is what the original story was that you just stated, but there is no eye witness that seen the beginning of the whole thing. There are plenty that seen or claimed to have seen what happened after or during but not the beginning. With that said now there is a story circulating the opposite that Z wasn't following him. Story is always changing. Grand Jury convenes April 10th. Just have to let it play out I guess.

Amazing piece of writing, worthy of a "Justified" or "Southland" episode. All that's missing isTrayvon grasping for Zimmermans gun and shouting "someone's gonna die tonight..."

Released a month after he killed the kid, plenty time for Zims camp to polish their story. The tarnishing of the victim is a work in progress.

no ... not trying not trying to put you down ...just tired of arguing the same point .... please link me the article that said the morgue saw no burising on his hands....or was it someone at the funeral home....because I dont she the body held in the morgue for 3 days ...also bruising on an africa american's skin is difficult to see without an ALS especially if there is no swelling...if it was someone in the funeral home brusing tend to disappear after the body is prepared.....
as for no blood on Zimmerman's shirt ...what if his jacket was zipped up at the time of the altercation...the police report said that he had blood and grass stains on his clothing....those are all fact.....

Rig would have something to due with the lack of bruising that I know. And the same thing about Trayvon being black (skin), I learned about this in forensics class and forgot all about it. DUH me. lol-- I just seen NG last night and the guy that embalmed Trayvon said the only apparent wound was the gunshot. I am curious as to what the autopsy reports show though. Something maybe the funeral directer missed? I don't know.

For some reason my second link didn't post-
Trayvon wasn't caught with pot. He was caught with an empty baggy with residue. At least that is the story now and the parents are backing that up. Still though, not sure how that relates to the issue at hand other than making him look bad, making him look as if he was the problem and Zimmerman was the victim. Time will tell. Gand Jury meets April 10th

Goodness women you really don't believe that do you? There have been numerous articles that state that isn't Trayvon. With the advancement of technology people will believe anything now a days. lol- I mean I am sure there are people on FB that look like Trayvon. That are smoking pot or showing gang activity but come on. It is really easy to fake accounts. I have seen what you are talking about and it is sooo obvious that isn't the same kid.

Here is yet another article that states Trayvon had been suspended multiple times for graffiti, possession of a screwdriver (described as a burglary tool) women's jewelry an empty bag that supposedly had pot residue, a pipe and of course truancy. Now the parents have no knowledge what so ever about the supposed jewelry or screw driver- Nobody ever contacted them. Don't ya think if that was true they would have contacted the parents? What I see going on here is bull. They are trying to paint Trayvon out to be the bad kid. A juvenile Delinquent that has absolutely NO criminal record. Obviously we have all been waiting for new details to emerge but this is ridiculous. Two totally different stories on how Zimmerman and Trayvon made contact. The first story is more believable because of the 911 tapes. Comments a gladly welcomed. I have an open mind but really?

IDK... ok so he is not a Choir Boy..but was that a valid reason to have shot and killed him? ( Obviously Zimmerman would not have know that).....I hate criminal behavior,,but even if TRAYVON was standing somkin' pot ,,,spray painting a tag on a garage,,, not a reason to shot and kill him,, ..If thats the case .. we are heading for open season on all the degenerates !

He wasn't doing any of that. Those were just things they said he had gotten suspended for in the past at school and smoking pot wasn't one of them. At any rate, he wasn't doing anything wrong from the 911 call that Z made. And you are right, there was no reason that I can see so far that he should have been killed. But then again. let us see what new thing transpires between now and April 10th

Well isn't this just a nice turn of events! Now all of a sudden, Trayvon didn't get suspended for truancy but because he had a bag of weed and there is a zero tolerance for drugs. And, the article states (which contradicts the 911 tapes) that Zimmerman was going to the store and Trayvon asked him if he had a problem and Z said no and then Trayvon said well you do now and sucker punched him! WTF????? Zimmerman refused medical treatment that night but went the next day. Are you freaking kidding me? What is next. So, the entire story basically has went from Trayvon was walking and talking on his cell with his GF, Zimmmerman was following him and called dispatch to say whatever the heck he said, to now he wasn't following him and that Trayvon confronted him? Anyone? Anyone like to share???

This is too strange. It's almost as if people are recieving some type of payment to make the boy look bad or to confuse the story so much that no one will be able to discern anything. I agree that these rumors are completely irrelevant to the lack of police action to test and arrest and to the shooting. The focus should be kept on the incident itself.

Exactly. But because this case wasn't handled properly to begin with that would explain why the story keeps changing or why attention is being diverted.

I agree, I think Zimmerman is paying Oliver, it seems Oliver is his only Friend willing and Zimmerman's only Loyal Friend! And don't forget Z's dad is a retired judge so that's who's probably Zimmerman's legal council at this point. Dad should incourage is son to be a man and turn himself in and deal with the problem he created for himself.

It's a work in progress. Zims camp might be hiring a crime writer to polish the story. Elmore Leonard could punch it up.

Fake "gangsta" photos of Trayvon Martin are circulating. No, he does not have gold teeth and tattoos.

Yet, those pictures actually ARE of Zimmerman, and they're the same ones every media outlet had. These fakes are of an entirely different, living person - not the Trayvon Martin who was murdered.
