Chile Earthquake 2012: 7.1 Magnitude Quake Strikes Country

By EVA VERGARA 03/25/12 10:09 PM ET AP

SANTIAGO, Chile -- A magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck central Chile Sunday night, the strongest and longest that many people said they had felt since a huge quake devastated the area two years ago. Some people were injured by falling ceiling material, but there were no reports of major damage or deaths due to quake-related accidents.

The quake struck at 7:30 p.m. about 16 miles (27 kilometers) north-northwest of Talca, a city of more than 200,000 people where residents said the shaking lasted about a minute.

Buildings swayed in Chile's capital 136 miles (219 kilometers) to the north, and people living along a 480-mile (770-kilometer) stretch of Chile's central coast were briefly warned to head for higher ground.

Residents were particularly alarmed in Constitucion, where much of the coastal downtown at the mouth of a river was obliterated by the tsunami caused by the 8.8-magnitude quake in 2010.

Panic also struck in Santiago and other cities, with people running out of skyscrapers, and many neighborhoods were left partly or totally without electrical power. Phone service collapsed due to heavy traffic.

"There are some injuries but nothing serious," said Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter, who was serving as acting president while Sebastian Pinera is on tour in Asia.

Hinzpeter said authorities were conducting a thorough survey of the affected regions to look for damage.

The Chilean navy's hydrographic and oceanographic service and the national emergency office called off a tsunami warning for most of the central coast after an analysis showed the quake wasn't the type to provoke killer waves.

The alert was restored for the area closest to the epicenter after police noticed the ocean had retreated about 130 feet (40 meters) from the shore in the towns of Iloca and Duao. A sharp outsurge of surf sometimes is followed by a tsunami.

Many coastal residents were staying away from the shore in any case, remembering how the government said there would be no tsunami just before huge waves struck after the 2010 quake, killing 156 of the 524 victims of that disaster.

With aftershocks rattled the region, many people living inland didn't want to go back inside their homes, either.

In Parral, about 230 miles (370 kilometers) south of the capital, Mayor Israel Urrutia said a 74-year-old woman died of a heart attack during the quake, and he blamed it on the shaking.

State television reported that parts of the ceiling fell from a church in Maipu, west of Santiago, slightly injuring some parishioners. Similar problems were reported with the roof of a shopping mall in La Florida, south of the capital.

State copper giant Codelco said its mines were functioning normally.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake occurred 19 miles (30 kilometers) deep.

It was the second significant quake in as many days for central Chile, where people were shaken awake Saturday morning by a 5.1-magnitude temblor that caused no major damage or injuries even though its epicenter was in metropolitan Santiago.

I live in Santiago (Chile's capital city), in an 11th floor building (and me right at the top), and the earthquake was very strong indeed. I was also a 'victim' of the 2010 earthquake in chile, 8.8. Could this be the start of something? Or this just another earthquake that has happened...I woke up at around 4.30 AM last thursday/friday (?) because of my windows smashing at a 5.2 quake. They've confirmed 0 dead, but one died in a result of a heart attack during the earthquake, and 14/16 injured (not 100% sure). I do hope no other quakes come, because we've really suffered enough. Those who question this, you should really try living somewhere, where strong quakes are pretty much common. And me, having a slight seismophobia (fear of earthquakes), it's not easy overcoming this fear, especially when I come from England, where we've never recieved a great earthquake.

everything okay now here in chile, though enough news coverage, it seem ti be replica of the 2010 earthquake according to news here about a one minute rocking back and forth of the builiding, as of the moments 15 injured none of seriously most already realsed, and one death not realted to the quake an elderly person due to heart problems, minor damages, costal city only in the epicenter was preventioned to evacuate coast due to some unusual water movements, none of which to worry, for now today schools closed. There has been no water, seems to be back up in a couple hours, electricity is back and to normal, though throughout the country there is some fear of recent events.- live from Chile.

I think the global warming and the earthquakes go hand in hand. I believe the core of the Earth is heating up for some reason, causing the tectonic plates to shift more rapidly and the polar ice caps to melt
06:38 PM on 03/26/2012
The core of the earth has its own heat source, namely radioactive decay of elements left over from long ago. It's really no affected by the atmosphere. The slippage of tectonic plates occurs deep underground, far away from weather. Weather should have no significant effect.
02:00 PM on 05/14/2012
And actually the burning of fossil fuels isn't helping things either. You burn stuff you create heat!

These earthquakes are making me Hungary. First Turkey, now Chile.

Maybe the Mayan Calender ending in 2012 has significance, it wasn't the total end of the earth, only the part that was their empire. (or THEIR world as they looked at it.)

It all starts with an earthquake,...

One should, after a earthquake, throw loose change on the ground. It is also good to be generous to a fault.
09:09 AM on 03/26/2012
are we having a lot more earthquakes or is it just my thinking?
06:40 PM on 03/26/2012
I don't think there's any significant trend, and neither does the US Geological Survey:

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learn/topics/increase_in_earthquakes.php

We do have better monitoring, so more are reported.
02:01 PM on 05/14/2012
Actually it's just your thinking. It's the fact now that we have 24 hour instant news. In the old days there were just as many, but we didn't hear about it online 5 minutes after it happened!
