Adolf Hitler was not known for having luscious locks (iconic facial hair notwithstanding). So there is pretty much no excuse we can think of for creating a shampoo commercial featuring the famous Nazi dictator.
Unfortunately Turkish shampoo company Biomen thought otherwise. The company released a commercial for a men's shampoo featuring vintage footage of Hitler making a fiery speech, dubbed with a voiceover saying, "If you're not wearing women's clothes, you shouldn't be using women's shampoo either. Here it is. A real man's shampoo. Biomen. Real men use Biomen."
As the commercial makes the Internet rounds, response to the ad has been less than favorable. While the video has gotten over a hundred "likes" on Youtube, is has received far more "dislikes" and plenty of negative comments, such as the following: "shame on that brand. there are so many nice ways to achieve viral communication. using Hitler in such a way is banalizing one the worst episode and man of world history."
Officials have given similar statements, including Abraham H. Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). According to the New York Post, Foxman said:
"[Hitler] was responsible for the mass murder of six million Jews and millions of others in the Holocaust to sell shampoo is a disgusting and deplorable marketing ploy.
It is an insult to the memory of those who perished in the Holocaust, those who survived, and those who fought to defeat the Nazis."
See the video below. Do you think the ad was simply a misguided publicity stunt or do you find the entire concept offensive?
