Animal Lovers Against Romney Super PAC Set To Launch

A longtime Democratic donor is launching a million-dollar super PAC devoted to telling the story about Mitt Romney's act almost three decades ago of putting his dog in a crate atop a car for a 12-hour drive to Canada.

Politico reports that Bob McDevitt has filed paperwork to launch Animal Lovers Against Romney and that the group has a $1 million budget for anti-Romney Internet ads in 10 battleground states. The group's website's name, www.MittIsMean.org, borrows a motto from an informal online protest movement known as Dogs Against Romney.

"Mitt is a mean dude," the site states. "If Romney teats his own pet like this, how do you think he'll treat you? Romney has already made it clear that he doesn't care about the cares and concerns of poor people and working families."

In 1983 Romney put his family's dog, Seamus, in a kennel on top of the family station wagon during a trip to Canada. Romney has insisted that Seamus loved riding on top of the car, but the former Massachusetts governor does not dispute that the dog suffered such a nasty bout of diarrhea that he had to pull over the car and hose off the animal.

Dogs Against Romney has publicized the story ever since the Boston Globe first reported it in 2007. Scott Crider, the group's founder, told HuffPost in an email that he has nothing to do with the new super PAC.

McDevitt told Politico that his goal is to "get the message out just how callous in temperament Mitt Romney is."

The Obama campaign earlier this year launched Pet Lovers for Obama.
