Trayvon Martin Case: Police Video Shows No Blood, Bruises On George Zimmerman After Killing

Posted: 03/28/2012 9:23 pm Updated: 03/29/2012 4:45 pm

Newly released video of George Zimmerman at the Sanford Police Department the night he shot Trayvon Martin to death show the neighborhood watch volunteer without blood on his clothing or bruises on his face or head. His clean-shaven picture seems to contrast with the violent beating he told police he endured at the hands of Martin, 17, who Zimmerman said attacked him from behind.

The video, obtained by ABC News, appears inconsistent with Zimmerman’s recently leaked statement to police that he was in a death struggle with Martin before Zimmerman shot him in the chest in self-defense. Zimmerman told investigators that Martin jumped him from behind, punched him in the nose and pounded his head into a sidewalk, according to a police report first described by the Orlando Sentinal.

In the video, apparently taken by surveillance cameras outside and inside the police station, Zimmerman’s face and head are clearly visible and show no injuries consistent with the kind of fight Zimmerman's statement described.

Zimmerman, 28, the neighborhood watch captain at the Retreat at Twin Lakes gated community, is seen arriving in a police cruiser. He gets out of the car with his hands cuffed behind his back. Zimmerman is clean-shaven and appears several pounds lighter than in ubiquitous mug shot of him taken in 2005 when he was arrested on a charge of assaulting a police officer.

The video’s release comes amid shifting public perception of Martin, whose baby-faced image has become the face of the so-called ā€œTrayvon Martin movement for Justiceā€ that has captivated much of the U.S. Earlier this week, school officials in Miami released Martin’s disciplinary record, showing that he had been on a 10-day suspension when he was killed. According to reports, school officials found an empty baggy that contained marijuana residue. Meanwhile, some websites have replaced widely circulated family photos of Martin with pictures of him sporting removable gold tooth caps. Other websites have picked seemingly random photos of other youth in questionable or offensive poses and claimed that they are of Martin.

Martin’s family has called the counter-offensive an assault on Martin’s character and a ā€œsmear campaign.ā€ Tracy Martin, the teen's father, told HuffPost earlier this week, ā€œI refuse to let them assassinate my son’s character." He added: "The question should not be why was he suspended from school, it should be why did this man kill him in cold blood."

Zimmerman shot Martin to death the night of Feb. 26. Martin had been walking toward his father's girlfriend's house shortly after 7 p.m. and Zimmerman spotted him and called 911 to report a "suspicious" person. Zimmerman followed Martin, disregarding a police dispatcher who told him "we don't need you to do that." Police said early in the investigation that Martin noticed he was being followed, asked Zimmerman what he wanted, and a physical encounter ensued.

In the recently released police reports, Zimmerman told police he got out of his vehicle to follow Martin, but lost sight of him. As he walked back to his vehicle, Martin attacked him from behind, punched him in the nose, knocked him down and began smashing the back of his head into the sidewalk, police reports say Zimmerman told officers. During the tussle, Zimmerman pulled the 9 mm handgun he carried and shot Martin in the chest, he told police.

Lawyers for the Martin family said Zimmerman was the aggressor. The lawyers said Martin's girlfriend in Miami was on the phone with him just moments before he was killed. The girlfriend has told ABC News and family lawyers that Martin told her someone was following him. She said she heard someone ask Martin something, then what sounded like someone pushing him. The phone sounded like it was then knocked to the ground and went dead, the girl said.

The funeral director who handled Martin's funeral said there were no cuts or bruises on the teen's hands that would suggest a violent struggle or fight.

ā€œI didn’t see any evidence he had been fighting anybody,ā€ Richard Kurtz of Roy Mizell and Kurtz Funeral Home in Fort Lauderdale, told television talk show host Nancy Grace.

Police took Zimmerman into custody after they arrived. He was questioned and released later that night. He remains free as the Seminole County State Attorney's Office reviews the police investigation and decides whether to file charges. The U.S. Justice Department also is investigating.

Mr. Lee, you had it right the first time, when you stated that Zimmerman was a "neighborhood watch volunteer". However, when you state a little further down that Zimmerman was a "neighborhood watch captain", that is incorrect. There was no organized, authorized neighborhood watch in that complex.
Zimmerman was under no one's direction and control other than himself, as shown by his disregard of a dispatcher's order.
Don't lend this murderer's actions any more legitimacy than he or his attorney claims.

And then three days later, ABC said they had "enhanced" the video and it did show injuries to the back of his head. Which makes you wonder why they didn't enhance it before they showed it the first time.

Zimmerman claims he was jumped from behind, and was punched in the nose. Then the back of his head was pounded into the sidewalk. With as many times as Zimmerman was turned around in this fight, is he sure he wasn't fighting Steven Seagal?

It's amazing that a person who was just involved in an alleged life-or-death struggle is so calm and steady - signs of a sociopath.

Well, the only wound on Martin is the gunshot to the chest which would only result in blood on Zimmerman if there was direct body contact. Zimmerman's wound to the nose and the back of the head may have resulted in some dripping blood to the front of his clothing and collar.  If Zimmerman did feel compelled to defend himself with lethal force, and it is a possibility, it remains odd that he was so calm and collected following the incident. Police officers, who are trained professionals, are typically treated for trauma following life threatening situations. And, the average person who kills in a street encounter is typically a mess immediately following the incident. I recognize different people react differently to the same situation, however, Zimmerman's post-shooting behavior is really odd considering he just shot and killed someone.

If someone's head is being slammed on concrete for a minute as Zimmerman's claims, he would have had skull fractures, possibly a concussion and definitely lumps. He only had two minor cuts that didn't even requir a band-aid. Plus he refused to go to the hospital that night. If they bring this up in court, there are expert medical personnel waiting to tear him apart. Anyone of mediocre intellegence can tell that Zimmerman was not in a life or death struggle.

"If this is true and they can match his voice to the 911 tape, GZ will never get out of prison"

The voice that's yelling for help early on is more likely GZ because of the injuries.

Without both going thru intense reenactment at the scene with the same phones and at the same distance, no device can discern who's voice it is.

The intensity and fear needed to open that part of the vocal cord for an imprint is very hard to reenact.

There is absolutely no way to compare it since he's gone.

Don't let anyone tell you different.

It can't be done.

radarz...lol. why do you lie?

do you also pee on shoes & tell people its rain?

listen to the 911 recording of the, imo, murder. listen to the cries for help and you will find that they are over 45 seconds in duration...and that "HELP" is screamed 17 times. And that the screamer begged his opponent for his life.

do you really believe that:

- an adult man begged a youth for his life

- a man with a history of racial animosity begged a black kid for his life

- a man with a gun desperately cried for his life

- an armed man 40 pounds heavier than an unarmed youth crying for help like his life depended on it

- a 28 yo armed man was deathly afraid of a 17 yo unarmed kid

Really?

OK, then. Suit yourself.

Let the whole world see your reasoning. :)

We can all "SMH" together.

At 0:23 it clearly sounds like the same guy in the 911 tape. The video is very grainy but his stance and walk is eerily similar to the 7/11 tapes.

Here's what I think happened.

I'm thinking that Trayvon saw his life might be in danger and tried to take down the man with the gun physically. Ironically according to the stand your ground law Trayvon would have been completely within his rights to SHOOT ZIMMERMAN and would not have been seen guitly of any crime. And in that case the law would be right. Zimmerman was the one who was a threat to Trayvon, and shooting him would have been a legally viable option.

It's a shame Trayvon didn't have a gun that day. He could have stood his ground and it would be Zimmerman dead, not a young kid who was preparing for college.

The "Stand your Ground" law is just a license to kill. Whoever has a gun and gets to shoot the other first is the winner. Such as it is, it's a pretty sick law, we already had the right to defend ourselves, we didn't need a law that promotes murder.

"I'm thinking that Trayvon saw his life might be in danger and tried to take down the man with the gun physically."

What was life threatening for Martin?

Zimmerman sitting in his suv watching him?

You have a complete misunderstanding of who the SYG law supports in this case.

He is, and was not a cop at the time, what gives him the authority to chase ANYONE DOWN let alone a kid and cause this confrontation. He was told by by police dispatch and i quote. "Are you following him? answer.. Yes. "Ok we dont need you to do that sir".If you dont stalk this kid, and just WAIT for the real police, then we dont have this problem a point many of you are missing. i would love to see you have sympathy or side with this man if he killed your unarmed son or daughter walking home from the store with a dangerous can of iced tea and and a lethal bag of skittles.
