Disney's "Newsies" opens on Broadway today at the Nederlander Theatre. The musical-turned film-turned-musical is expected to be a hit on Broadway, especially with the 20-somethings that saw the original film version, which flopped but became a cult classic.
"Newsies" tells the story of Jack Kelly (played by Jeremy Jordan) and his fellow orphaned newsboys on strike against their publishing house in New York in 1899. Playbill released a highlights reel of the play, and the quick two minutes look exciting -- full of athletic dance moves, masculinity and an epic score.
The musical was directed by Jeff Calhoun, choreographed by Christopher Gattelli and scored by Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman, who also scored the film. The play was acclaimed during it's debut in September at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, N.J. Watch Playbill's highlight reel of "Newsies:"
