Philadelphia Priest Trial: 'Sexual Sobriety' Was Tough For Clergy

By MARYCLAIRE DALE 03/28/12 04:46 PM ET AP

William Lynn
Monsignor William Lynn is accused of endangering children by allowing Roman Catholic priests suspected of sexual abuse to be in contact with minors.

PHILADELPHIA — A string of Roman Catholic priests testified Wednesday in a landmark clergy-abuse case, saying they reported fellow priests to the archdiocese after finding them with pornography or in unhealthy relationships with children.

The priests, uncomfortably, are prosecution witnesses in the trial of a longtime supervisor in the Philadelphia archdiocese, Monsignor William Lynn. The former secretary for clergy is charged with endangering children by allegedly helping the church cover up abuse complaints.

The Rev. Joseph Okonski told jurors Wednesday that he found pornographic magazines and videos, and a sexually explicit letter to a seventh-grade boy, in another priest's bedroom in 1995.

The graphic letter, which purported to be from a classmate, asked if the boy wanted oral sex. The author said he fantasized about seeing the boy getting spanked by his father. The boy was told to write "Yes" on a bulletin board at the parish school if he wanted to engage in sex acts with his "secret lover."

Okonski said his housemate admitted writing the letter and soon left the parish. But the next trial witness said the priest landed at his rectory, where he worked with altar boys and had no restrictions on his ministry.

Prosecutors argue that predator-priests were, at best, transferred if they got in trouble, then left to seek out new victims.

The witnesses, on cross-examination, said the archbishop had the final say in priest transfers. Lynn could make recommendations, but the late Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua or his successor, retired Cardinal Justin Rigali, made the decision, they said.

"Inevitably, any movement of priests is done by the archbishop," Okonski said.

The priests testified that they were put in awkward positions by the behavior of men with whom they lived and worked.

A Levittown pastor said he was tasked with finding out which priest had ordered the X-rated movies that showed up on their cable bill.

Another priest called the Office for Clergy because his North Philadelphia pastor had an all-consuming relationship with a young teen. Father Michael Hennelly said he was concerned, especially after hearing about the pastor's last such relationship, when a fallout with the boy was said to have ended violently. Hennelly soon asked for a transfer.

"For my well-being, I couldn't live and work there," he said.

Hennelly later joined the Office of Clergy staff in 2004, the same year Lynn finished his 12-year stint as its director. He described working with priests trying to achieve what he called "sexual sobriety."

St. John Vianney, a church-run hospital in Downingtown, had "Sexaholics Anonymous" meetings devoted exclusively to priests. Others attended "Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous," Hennelly said.

There are about 800 priests in the Philadelphia archdiocese. More than 60 have been accused of molesting children since 1948, although only a few have ever been charged. About 500 Catholic priests in the U.S. have been convicted of sexual-abuse charges, according to the advocacy group BishopAccountability.org.

But no church supervisors were ever charged for mishandling abuse complaints until Lynn.

Prosecutors in Philadelphia issued two explosive grand jury reports on priest sexual abuse in 2005 and 2011. They blasted Rigali and Bevilacqua but concluded they could not make a case against either, in part because of legal time limits.

New accusations led Lynn to be charged last year with felony child endangerment and conspiracy. He faces up to 28 years if convicted. Prosecutors call the archdiocese an unindicted co-conspirator in his case.

Four others were charged in the same indictment with sexually assaulting boys. The Rev. James Brennan is on trial with Lynn. Defrocked priest Edward Avery will serve 2-1/2 to five years after pleading guilty last week to sexual assault and conspiracy. And the Rev. Charles Engelhardt and former Catholic school teacher Bernard Shero are set for trial later this year. They are accused of raping the same boy that Avery assaulted.

All but Avery have pleaded not guilty.

Celebacy is an ancient means to free oneself to lead a spiritual life. Ironically, with the advent of birth control, the need for it to avoid having children and thus avoid burdening a family with a spiritual mission ceases to exist. Rather than condemn birth control and deny priests from having sex in healthy, intimate, consensual adult relationships the RC church should whole heartedly embrace both a married priesthood and its use of birth control.

The travesties committed against children, as well my brothers experience with our parish priest..AND my experiences with my catholic H.S,'s principal have made me bitter..

While 16, my parents fell behind in tuition at my catholic school..the priest "principal" interrogated me as to why my tuition was late....He had his feet on the desk ,puffing a cigar while he screamed at me-a 16 yr old kid-and told me I "better get a job to catch up"...I was terrified...I cried my eyes out while he screamed at me...He terrified me....and smiled thru the whole thing...and said Id get detention if my parents didnt pay up...

I cried that day out of fear of that awful man with a cigar yelling at me..he said what is WRONG with your parents..I was told a check was needed in 3 days...

I can only imagine the poor little ones raped by these monsters....

If I saw that priest today Id punch him the ba-ls

the only way this will be put to a stop is if they are allowed to marry. i am a catholic, and i would be happy if my priest were able to be married. it would mean that our children could be safe, and that they wouldnt have to lie about the natural sexual feelings they have. im sure that alot of priests knew they were gay before and thats what motivated them to become priests. they were trying to be something they couldnt, and celibacy is osmething that takes great discipline...they need to be able to marry. we can stop all of this from happening without giving up on our religion.

Great post.....I TOTALLY agree that priests should be allowed to marry...and I OFTEN...OFTEN thought that many priests were gay and hid in the church...

BUT...there are very man gays priests who are devoted...BUT,,,the "element" here is that gays didnt rape these children...PEDOPHILES DID..

This is my archdiocese..im disgusted at the cover up...PRIESTS SHOULD MARRY. But it wont solve the problem...the PROBLEM is the Church hiding these horrors......

Allowing them to marry will not solve the problem; many a married man is a pedophile. They need to be prosecuted to the maximum extent of the law to include the leaders who condoned it.

Finally, the inner workings of the priesthood are being revealed for all to see. This exposure is beyond the pall of belief for many, but hopefully, it'll wake up some "Pew Potatos," who think that the Church, the Hierarchy and their priests can do no wrong. There is no such thing as "innocently" looking at porn, writing love letters to kids, caressing them, molesting them, raping them or sodomizing them, and yet, for years Catholics have been made to think that the above things don't happen! Or, if they do, they are blown out of proportion by the media and the courts! Wake up out there! These are just the beginning of the sordid revelations that will come out, and here's a prediction. After Archbishop Chaput has the Archdiocese pay for the costly defense of Monsignor Lynn, the parishioners will be hit with another bill: A Madison Avenue "PR Campaign" designed to bring "lapsed" Catholic back to the Church, and yet there will be no money to reopen Catholic Schools!

ANd Chaput's predecessor paid mega (MEGA) bucks to remodel the downtown cathedral with new marble floors, shrines and altars even after teh 1st grand jury report as all this was making its way through the legal system and schools were closing. No one was asked if an upgrade was needed or even wise under the circumstances. RC bishops are the ultimate boys in the bubble and they are still not getting what ought to be coming to them. The Philly, and now KC trials are only a tentative start.

Hopefully the allegations against the Vatican for orchestrating coverups (see Crimen Sollicitationis English version), in the Priest Pedophilia Scandal will be brought before the World Court in the Hague. All parents need to understand that any person in any position of authority could potentially be a child abuser - male OR female (as recent news accounts show, women can be just as evil). That includes teachers, scout leaders, neighbors, babysitters, ministers, coaches - anyone in contact with young people.

Adults and children need to be educated in the "grooming" behaviors of molesters. Molesters focus on children who are not intensely protected by an adult in their lives - whose parent rely and trust the adult (as in Sandusky's case, often single parents [mothers] who enroll their at risk sons in sports programs).

Does the Catholic Church have a problem with sexual predators? Yes. But there are many more out there, in all facets of life and we overlook them at our peril. All parents and all children need to be educated on the risks, signs and behaviors that indicate they should not trust a person, especially one in authority of any kind. Sexual molestion is not just a sexual crime, it is a power and rage crime and those who commit these awful acts are pros at the psychology and mental manipulation of both children and the adults in the child's life. Trust needs to be earned, and very warily.

I'd like to see you present that argument in court as a defense of a child-abusing priest. You would be laughed into the streets. The fact remains we're not talking about people who aren't accused of a crime. Until such time as there is proof neighbors, babysitters, ministers, etc. have been alleged and proven to be child abusers, there is no case against them and you have no real defense.

In fact, you're offering the same nonsensical bilge Catholic websites are offering to deflect the public's attention from the enormity of the crimes committed by priests and bishops here and across Europe. The Church's myths of 2000 years which have bedazzled the peasants into unquestioning belief are being exposed as the pious frauds they always were.

Listen Snarky. I'm not making an argument in defense of anyone. Ever.

I'm saying, and please try hard to comprehend this ~ parents need to do a better job of protecting their children AND both they AND their children need to learn the warning signs that signal a sexual predator in action.

If they can learn this self-defense, there won't be any need to accuse anyone of the crime. You're old enough to know it isn't just Catholic priests who abuse - now or throughout history. There should be NO mercy for anyone convicted of these crimes.

I haven't checked out any Catholic websites but common sense would dictate that parents need to learn the signs, teach their children and give their trust warily. I suggest Snarky that you do an internet search on "sexual predators" and see what occupations they come from, including the website from your state listing the convicted abusers. If it were only Catholic priests the problem would be easily stoppable - throw out the priests but that is naive beyond belief.

Yes, the pope sits atop a pyramid of concupsicence. Catholics throughout the world should email or storm the Vatican demanding B16's resignation and that of the College of Cardinals, send in their resignations, withhold any further financial support of this corrupt enterprise, and form their own independent church. Completely free from the corrupting hands of these pontifical hypocrites and their commission of repeated acts of sacrilege.

Perverted priests have been around for a very, very long time. They are thought of as men of God, when in actuality they do the devil's bidding. The fact that bishops, cardinals and other
priests monitor and chastise these predators, is not only appalling, but consequential to other would-be victims! It's the same as letting a wolf guard the chicken coop! Nothing is 'sacred' anymore.

Sexual abuse and predatory behavior is rampant in many churches, not only in the Catholic Church. While the Catholic Church gets the most attention, I suggest that a study be done examining the church doctrine of the churches from which these predators come. I believe a strong correlation would be found between the level of "authority" vested in the minister and the likelihood of abuse. Churches which vest the most power in single individuals are more likely to have problems of abuse by their ministers.

Just an educated guess, I suppose. I haven't heard of that kind of study being done. But it would be revealing, I think.

You just keep drinking that Catholic Kool Aid. There is NO data on Protestant church clergy raping or seducing little boys and girls on a scale that can even come close to what is known to date about Catholic priests.

Protestant clergy and gay high school teachers have been the object of Catholic Church calumnies and they have nothing on the thousands of priests throughout the world who are active pederasts. Then you have even more priests and bishops who have managed to escape scrutiny through obstruction of justice, prevarication, subornation of perjury, and bribery of their accusers and the local law enforcement authorities. Read what state prosecutors ARE CONTINUING to investigate throughout Germany, Austria, Ireland, Holland, and Belgium, just for starters.

After the Philly trial you will see a concerted effort to bring Benedict XVI and his cardinals up for trial before the Internation Court of Justice at The Hague, a move to abolish diplomatic relations with the Holy See in the U.S and to close the Papal embassy in Washington, and to throw the Vatican out of the United Nations. It is clearly a rogue, criminal state, and should be ended once and for all.

The Catholic church DID their own study of priests between 1950-2002 called the John Jay study. It was voluntary, and of course, a lot of thm lied or didn't report, like LA, who refused to report, they had to pay 500 victims four years later. But here is what they admitted:

- 4,392 "Jerry Sandusky" priests
- over 10,000 victims tha they know about
- 4% of all priests were child sex abusers, but the cheated the stats by including new priests
- if you just look at the 70s and 80s, 8-10% of priests were child sex abusers, which is about 100 times the rate of the normal population
01:37 PM on 04/01/2012
The "John Jay Report" was orchestrated and paid for by the bishops of the United states! The only data this commission had to work with was the data given them by the bishops! It's not a stretch of the imagination to believe that not all of the bishops were 100% honest and that all cases of Pedophilia were reported! The "John Jay Report," was nothing more than a publicity stunt by the US Council of Catholic Bishops! History will show that Priest Pedophiles were highly UNREPORTED!

Too much focus on sexual desire. These men don't rape little kids because they are horny. They are seeking power and control, and children are very easy targets to corner, overpower and control. Their penis is just the weapon of choice. The idea that these sickos would not perpetrate these crimes if married or allowed to have sex is so sick and wrong. Many children are the victim of sexual abuse by their own parents, even when those parents are already married. If these priests were willing to break the law by raping kids, certainly visiting prostitutes would not have given them a moments pause. The point of their crimes is to inflict pain and torment upon their victims so that they can feel big, strong and powerful. Were this not the case, they would choose willing partners on equally mental footing, just like the rest of us. Like a normal adult. Please stop equivocating rape to sexual desire. We all get horny. Very few of us rape.
