Trayvon Martin Case: George Zimmerman's Race Is A Complicated Matter

By SUZANNE GAMBOA 03/29/12 07:16 AM ET AP

Zimmerman

WASHINGTON -- At first, the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager at the hands of a white neighborhood watch volunteer was playing out like many previous tragedies that cut short the lives of young black men.

Soon however, it became obvious that sorting out racial dynamics in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin would not be simple. Police described the shooter, George Zimmerman, as white. His father called him a "Spanish speaking minority" with many black relatives and friends.

While public outrage simmered over perceptions that local police didn't do enough to investigate Martin's death, possible racial motives on Zimmerman's part became tough to pin down. His background and associations cut across racial lines, and his racial identity didn't fit neatly into a box.

"It's easy to label this as an act of white racism, but it's really an act of stereotyping, which many groups are capable of and it is occurring in the context of extraordinarily permissive laws," said Manuel Pastor, a professor of American studies and ethnicity at the University of Southern California.

On Twitter, there was genuine confusion about Zimmerman's race. Is he Latino or white? Is Hispanic a race, or not? Shouldn't he, a Latino, have known better than to engage in racial profiling? Might he be Jewish, based on his last name? Many said his Hispanic lineage had nothing to do with the fact that the justice system had failed Martin, while some said Zimmerman's identity was very important.

"I'm actually happy that George Zimmerman is Hispanic so the usual white people are all guilty by virtue of their skin color stuff won't work," said a March 22 tweet by John Hawkins, who described himself as a professional blogger at Right Wing News.

Hispanic people can be black, white, Asian or mixed. Some 18 million Latinos checked the "some other race" category on their 2010 Census forms – which admonished in bold letters that Hispanic is not a race. So many Hispanics identified themselves as white, the overall number of white people in the United States increased.

"We sit in this in between place in the United States. In the U.S., when we think about race, it's usually black and white. ... Latinos complicate that dichotomy," said Cynthia Duarte, associate director of research for the Institute of Latino Studies at Notre Dame.

On voter registration forms, George Zimmerman identified himself as Hispanic, as did his mother. His father, Robert, listed himself as white on voter registration forms. Zimmerman's mother, Gladys, is originally from Peru.

Ethnicities in Peru run the gamut. Descendants of the original people or Amerindians of Peru, those who were under rule of the Inca empire, are the largest ethnic group, followed by those who are a mix of Spanish and Amerindian ancestry, also known as mestizos. Whites are about 15 percent of the population, followed by blacks, Asians and other groups. Class distinctions based on race and language persist in Peru, with whites at the top of the societal hierarchy and indigenous people often at the bottom, a vestige of Spanish colonialism.

Kay Hall, a former neighbor of the Zimmermans when they lived in Manassas, Va., said Zimmerman's mother spoke fluent English and Spanish but she's not certain if George Zimmerman or his brother spoke Spanish. She didn't remember Gladys sharing any stories about her life in Peru or seeing the family carrying out any traditional Peruvian cultural activities.

"I saw Hispanics, blacks, all kinds of people visiting over there," Hall said. "I don't think they had any kind of racial problems."

Neither Zimmerman nor his family members were available to comment about their family history. Beyond what's in the police report, Zimmerman has yet to give his side of what happened the night of Feb. 26, when he called police to say he was following a "suspicious" person he believed was on drugs, while Martin, wearing a hooded sweat shirt, walked through the gated Sanford, Fla., townhome community where Zimmerman lives. Police have not charged Zimmerman, who told them he shot Martin in self-defense, something considered justified homicide under Florida's "stand your ground law."

What Martin's case represents most profoundly is how hazardous it is to judge people simply on the basis of the way they look, said Janet Murguia, president of the National Council of La Raza. The cautionary tale applies both to Martin and to Zimmerman, she said.

"The bottom line is you can't tell if someone is Latino simply by looking at them," Murguia said.

Where Zimmerman may fit within the range of Hispanic identity is another matter. Although Robert Zimmerman described his son as "Spanish speaking," it's clear from the 911 call made that night that George Zimmerman is comfortable speaking English. Some Latinos may not consider Zimmerman to be truly Latino, since only one of his parents is Hispanic.

Some Hispanics, mostly in the Southwest, will say they are Spanish to make clear they identify with Spanish explorers who came to the Americas in the 1500s. In Texas, Latino has only recently become an identifying term; Tejano, Chicano or Mexican American have been more common. Cubans, who make up a large share of Hispanics in Florida, are more likely to identify as white than Puerto Ricans, whose presence is growing in Florida.

Beyond that, there is the question of tensions between Hispanics and blacks. Florida also has had its share of this, namely last year's shootings of black men by Cuban-American officers in Miami.

As anti-Hispanic and anti-immigrant rhetoric has intensified in recent years, many Latinos have come to hold their collective breath when a crime occurs, many thinking: Please don't let the perpetrator be Latino. Please don't let the perpetrator be an immigrant. Please don't let the perpetrator be in the country illegally.

"It pains me to see that someone who identifies himself as Latino was involved in this," Murguia said. "But I want to make very clear that being Hispanic does not excuse or absolve George Zimmerman of his actions."

It is really sad when, I hear white students in my school brag about being in the store when there are alot of black people make them happy, because, then they have the opportunity to steal the store blind because, they know the white people are watching black people to make sure they don't steal. Now, you explain crime again, because this I have heard from many white students from diversed economic backgrounds. Crime is justified in the white community as deviance and it is ascribed in all communities as criminal when the same crime is committed by a black youth. White people commit more crimes in their communities and black, latinos, natives, asians, and middle easterns commit more in their communities. If you look at the history in this country and particular in the south, 30% of White Americans have between 2% and 20% African ancestry. The Media and the American people can project a positive or negative image of any group and it is effective if as long as it becomes institutionalized by the majority and implemented for the progression of some and the oppression of others. What G_d do you pray to, I really want to know? You need to look in the mirror and ask yourself am I really living by the word, or am I hiding behind the glot and hooraying because Trayvon Martin got shot.

I really wish people (of all political persuasions) could see past the race angle here... This story actually has very little to do with race... It's about far more fascinating things... Like for instance, the prevalence of gated townhome communities in Florida and how they are trusted to do their own security and policing and even make their own traffic laws...
It's also about the strange phenomenon where police in Florida have been simply refusing to investigate crimes and make arrests... and no one seems able to explain this.

Let's be honest here. Liberals wanted Zimmerman to be 100% white, so they could make this about a racist white killing a black kid. Frankly, I'm tired of only white peoplem getting called out for their racism when it exists amongst all people. It's as if it is acceptable for latinos to hate blacks & vice versa, but the second a white says or does something racist it gets dragged out in the media for months. Quite the double standard. Let's see if the HuffPost gestapo let this comment through. My guess is NO...

the problem with this stand your ground law, is it will give others the same opportunity to carry a gun, shoot someone and say self defense. that's scary.

Really, Perhaps people should change their attitude about what is construed as norm or Thug.
I live in a foreign country and have been told do not draw attention to yourself.. A defensive tool against terriosim in a way..
So If 'iam in the US what is a Norm dress? like a thug act like one, give me a break.. Drawing negative attention to one self is really stupid, might get you killed?? Oh yea rights.... Germans are big on rights when driving, question do I die because of some right, YEA I winn.........REALLY????

my wife and i lived in Florida for a short time. there is soooooo much hatred there, that's a main reason we're back in Pennsylvania. The new Cubans hate the old the whites hate the blacks, the blacks hate the whites, the young people hate the old, the residents hate the "snowbirds", Jewish people have no use for Gentiles and vice-versa. Gotta live there for a while to believe it. many are stll fighting the Civil War! my wife was a teacher at Deerfield Beach high and i was at Bright Horizons special ed. We lived in Coral Springs, near Fort Lauderdale. Just thought i'D THROW THAT later stuff in to make my statement more creditable THAT we indeed are real. oh, and the ducks are ugly and dangerous too!

Some people still wave the Confederate Flag in Florida.

I don't understand it, the Confederate States of America was a foreign country with a 4 year life span. It was abolished 147 years ago.

what is complicated about it? ever hear K.I.S.S.? ZIMMERMAN WAS TOLD TO STAND DOWN BY 911. He should have taken this advice. so, i think martin is covered by 'stand by your ground's" stupid law now. He is being stalked by a wanna-be cop who no one dared question because his rich daddy was a former judge. GOD BLESS those who had him in court if he finds it okay to lie in an obvious situation now.
02:51 PM on 04/12/2012
Well SAID, my thoughts exactly!!! It's not about race it's about some gun hungry Clint Eastwood wannabe trying to show HIS authority and take matters into his own hands without probable cause.
10:01 AM on 04/01/2012
Supposed white racism is so valuable to black politicians that they will take extreme measures to ensure its continued existence, even if only in people's imagination. It's the same with supposed anti semitism for the pro-Israel lobby. These myths must be kept alive at all costs!

By race, Zimmerman is White; by ethnicity he is Hispanic (Latino). What Zimmerman does is choose which he wants to be when the situation suits him. No doubt growing up when he needed to avail himself of White privilege and his father's help making crimes go away, he was a White boy but when he wanted to avail himself of any affirmative action programs, he was a Hispanic boy. I wonder if he neighbors in the gated community knew he was Hispanic?
10:18 AM on 04/01/2012
You wonder if the neighbors knew he was hispanic?? Can they see?? He looks 100% latino, period. And not a single, fair-minded person can suggest otherwise. Look at the picture!!!
12:35 PM on 04/05/2012
You are making a lot of assumptions about what George Zimmerman did, and did not do regarding his racial self-identification. The only thing we do know is that he chose to label himself as an Hispanic on his voter registration form.

As a white person growing up in south Florida I met a lot of Latinos over the years. I never heard about any racist issues between Latinos and blacks, but I did hear a lot of racist comments from Hispanics about other Hispanic races. Some Cubans spoke badly about Puerto Ricans and vise versa. I had friend from Argentina who spoke badly about Cubans and Puerto Ricans also saying that Cubans didn't even speak real Spanish. Racism is racism. If you are capable of hating one race you are capable of hating anyone because race. Growing up around so many different races, I guess I could have easily become one myself. I got bullied in school by some black girls who would fly by me in the hallway and purposely knock me into the grass. And some would walk by and stab me with pins or sewing needles. After experiencing that and seeing the look of delight on their faces after they did it was weird to me. I wasn't so much angry as shocked. I guess they were getting back at me because I was white, but I wasn't sure. I believe that the Trayvon Martin killing was motivated by racism and I really hope that Zimmerman gets arrested and convicted. Anything else would be a horrible injustice.

why don't they do like in the old days with the indians. If your father was white and mother indian you were a half breed. And later on in life you would say mixed. Now that would be a good one now since most of the population is a mixed breed. The Russians say they are caucasian, so do the white Amereicans so how do they tell the difference because they both are caucasian.

"At first, the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager at the hands of a white neighborhood watch volunteer was playing out like many previous tragedies that cut short the lives of young black men." Thats great, fan the fire..... BUT a study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that from 2001 to 2005, more than nine out of 10 black murder victims were killed by other blacks.

It doesn't really matter what race, culture or ethnic group Zimmerman belongs to - all that matters is that it appears he committed a crime based on stereotypes of the race/culture/ethnicity of another.

Well, that matters - and that the law is applied equally to all.
03:49 AM on 04/01/2012
I was always under the impression that you take Race of your Father, not the color of your skin. Look at some Singers, Ball Players and a very popular Golfer, all Identify with the Race of there Dad. And what is this BS about Spanish not being a Race????? Puerto Ricans are a Race, Dominicans are a Race, Mexicans, Colombians, Cubans, people from Peru, Argentina, Venezuela, and so on,,,,, all are a Race,,, and together we are all Spanish, you should not attempt to redefine and divide a Race of people just because its convenient for you. It’s not how a group of people came about to be, it’s what they are now.
06:31 AM on 04/01/2012
We all hopefully can be proud of our heritages, as am I, but the groups you described are nationalities, not races. Black Cubans who are discriminated against in Cuba definitely understand race, so do Asian Peruvians. And for many from Brazil who don't speak Spanish, they definitely don't want to be called Spanish, although many in the U.S. don't have a problem being called Hispanic. The term I've always heard to group all the peoples you described is Latin Americans (those from South and Central America, and the Caribbean).

As for claiming the race of your father, I've always taken the race of my mother, because if I called myself white (the race of my father), people look at me strange and say, no, you're Hispanic or something. I'm happy to be different, and always hope no one persecutes me just for my looks (although I've had that happen many times) or beliefs.
08:04 AM on 04/02/2012
Last time I checked if you are Spanish that makes you from Spain... I can assure you that someone in Argentina,Cuba,Peru or other Countries in South America if asked wouldn't say that they are Spanish. Or that their race is spanish.
01:03 AM on 04/01/2012
No it's not a complicated matter, it doesn't matter and is just confounding the issue that he is an unhinged Charles Bronson wanna be and shot an unarmed teenager and hasn't had to answer for it.

Just because you do not have a gun does not mean you are unarmed. Many people get killed with fists or feet.

That's exactly what it does mean! if you're not carrying any weapon then you're not carrying arms, you're unarmed. Martin wasn't a professional boxer or MMA fighter so his fist and feet don't count as weapons...

His race is human from the shallow end of the gene pool.
ethnicity, color and creed or actions doesn't change your race.
This guy should have his day in court. To all the ignorant people who cling to color or lack there of to give their life meaning. You are no better than who you claim Zimmerman is.
The blame for what happened is on both young men involved and their families.
Trayvon should have listened to his girlfriend who told him on the phone to run home. He chose not to avoid a conflict. Zimmerman should have listened to the 911 operator who told him not to follow and wait for the police. Both young men refused reason. I am sure that many details about their troubled past will come to light at the trial.

What makes you think if Trayvon had 'run' he would have lived? A black teenager running away would have been one more 'reason' for Zimmerman to murder him.

"I am sure that many details about their troubled past will come to light at the trial. "

We already know some of the troubled past of the shooter, more to come no doubt IF he is brought to justice. What in the victim's or his family's past could possibly make you think he deserved to be murdered??? Well, I have a pretty good idea. You need to take a long look in the mirror before you preach to anyone else about ignorance.

First off a gun shot to the back is hard to call self defense. Second I do not believe there will be a trial as the stand your ground law is a law. Last people have gated communities to keep undesirables out.
You have all ready tried this man. It sounds like you are doing the same thing you say Zimmerman did, profile.
10:45 AM on 04/01/2012
Trayvon was a troubled teen who had been suspended from school after being searched and was found to have a screwdriver and 12 pieces of jewelry on his person. When he was questioned he said he was holding it for a friend. Sounds like he was a thief or had friends who were. His actions that night set the stage for him to lose his life. Out at night in the rain dressed to steal in a neighborhood where many homes had been robbed.
You are willing to overlook every mistake this kid made and only see his color and then stand in judgement of Zimmerman...that shows your ignorance!
