Woman Voters For Obama: Gender Gap Favoring President Is Wider Now Than In 2008

Women Voters Obama

WASHINGTON -- Women voters played a strong role in securing President Barack Obama's victory in 2008, and new polling shows that the gender gap between Obama and the GOP candidates is even wider going into the 2012 elections.

According to a new survey by the Pew Research Center, Obama is leading Mitt Romney by 20 points (58 to 38 percent) and Rick Santorum by 26 points (61 to 35 percent) among women voters. During the presidential primaries in March 2008, women said they preferred Obama or Hilary Clinton over Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) by a margin of 14 points (53 to 39 percent).

Among male voters, Obama's lead over Romney is not so clear. The March survey shows Obama leading Romney by a very small margin (49 to 46 percent), while he's favored over Santorum by 11 points.

Women have traditionally favored Democratic presidential candidates, but the new poll shows that more than a quarter (28 percent) of women who identified as conservative said they preferred Obama in a match-up with Romney. The widening gender gap, according to Terry O'Neill, president of the National Organization for Women, has a lot to do with the GOP candidates' support of anti-contraception legislation, Santorum calling birth control "not okay," and Romney's failure to adequately condemn Rush Limbaugh's comments toward a young woman who advocated for contraception coverage.

Obama and his team, by contrast, have been making a big push over the past week to promote the benefits of Obamacare and the contraception-coverage rule for women.

"The real reason for the gap is that Santorum has been so offensive towards women, as has Mitt Romney," she said. "People are appalled. On the other hand, the president has touted and specifically cited his accomplishments for women, indicating he knows women have specific issues that matter to them."

Santorum's and Romney's campaigns did not respond to requests for comment.

In addition to contraception and health care issues, economic issues factored into to women's preference of Obama. The lower a woman's income is, the more likely she is to favor Obama. Sixty-three percent of women who make less than $30,000 a year prefer Obama to Romney, compared to 56 percent of women earning more than $75,000. Men in the wealthier bracket preferred Romney by an eight-point margin.

Part of women's economic concerns, O'Neill pointed out, has to do with Romney's support for the Paul Ryan budget, which slashes programs like Medicaid that disproportionately benefit women. Women are more likely than men to live and work in nursing homes, many of which could be shut down by the new budget cuts.

Also, women are less likely to have financial safety nets in old age than men because of the gender wage gap. Women are still earning 77 cents on the dollar compared to men, which is another issue of concern in November.

"As we get closer to the election, what women will be looking for is for both candidates to proactively talk to women about the issues that matter most to them," O'Neill said. "Women's jobs, women's pay, and women's reproductive health."

I don't think the Huffpost is familiar with this poll.

Perhaps they just don't care because it shows Romney with an advantage concerning married women. However, it also shows unmmaried women do not favor Romney. I think that THIS poll represents a more logical picture: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/OTUS/put-ring-obama-wins-women-married-types/story?id=16057761

Many married women already have their careers in place, have children, and are fiscally OK. As represented by exit polls, women in general favored Romney over Santorum as they see him as socially moderate. A lot of married women with children are socially moderate, so they would see a ban on contraception as extreme, but would have less issue with anti abortion laws (provided they weren't extreme restrictions, example: not making exceptions for rape victims or threat to mother, the Santorum level stuff).

Again, the ABC news poll makes the most sense. Obama will champion in the unmarried women vote, but he has a slight disadvantage with the married women vote. This WILL be a close race.

Romney says he's 'probably' gettin the nomintion :

He paid for it - let him can take it home.

But that will turn into a 'booby' prize for Mittens...just you wait (no pun here)

Because...Women will ROCK this election.

They screwed with the wrong people this time.

We are all ages and over the map and we got NEXT

No one with a brain, and certainly no woman AT ALL, should vote for a single Republican this year. NOT EVEN ONE.

Obamacare is unconstitutional. Obama is a corrupt lying fraud with a Fake birth form, Fraudulent SS# and Fake selective service card as exposed by prominent Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Obama is a Fraud. Barack Hussein Obama had a Muslim dad and a Muslim stepfather that adopted him. That makes Hussein a Muslim. Hussein also has Muslim family members, and the Luau tribe that obama is from is an Islamic tribe that were some of the 1st Slave traders of Africa. Hussein attended a Madrassa and learned the koran as a Muslim student in Indonesia. Hussein said he was a Muslim in an interview with Stephanopolis and Michele obama said she was proud to live in a Muslim family with Ms. O'Brien on CNN in January 2008. Taquiyya is the Islamic tenet that it is Good work to Lie to and Deceive non-Muslims to advance Islam.

Just watched the video "Dinner with Barack and Michelle" and the one thing one of the invited couples shared was how his health care legislation helped their 5 year old with brain surgery: The insurance company couldn't drop them for the child's pre-existing condition. The wife was almost in tears as the husband described their gratitude.

President Obama has accomplished great things for many! I will work hard to ensure he continues to work on behalf of America's recovery and the exceptionalism of us all...not just the 1%.

What about Obamas Unconstitutional war he started in Libya. Obama has turned Libya over to Al-Qaeda and there are over 40,000 Black people being Massacered and thousands more raped & tortured just because they are Black. Do you support that kind of exceptionalism???

The problem is that the GOP has cleverly waved divisive social issues that fool many women...and men too.

Just the single issue of abortion convince many, against their own best interests, to vote GOP. Is it in the best medical interest in women of vote GOP? NO. Is it in the best fiscal interest of the 99% to vote for the GOP? NO.

And yet they will, because of abortion. As a man I may have a different perspective than a woman. I am against abortion. I would suggest looking at all options. But in the end, I do think it should be the woman who makes the decision, not the government. Nor do I think that doctors should be forced by the government to do unnecessary medical procedures that are meant to sway a woman seeking an abortion.

It is very hard to believe that the Republican party, the so called party of small government, would so aggressively push such invasive government laws by legislating their version of morality. They criticize Islamic Theocracies, but seem to have no problem with a Christian Theocracy.

Well, I do...and I hope that in 2012, the majority of Americans will also voice their displeasure in the GOP.

Based on another news item the republicans are trying to win over the latino vote. Based on the percentages involved between women and latinos why aren't they at least trying to lie to women as well as the latinos. If they only win over latinos they will still lose by a large percentage.

Do you really want these people in charge of your government? It's a scary time.

Unfortunately, most Republicans have little idea what it takes to attract women to their side.

We saw what happened when they tried it in 2008.

People are really amazingly insular in how we look at ourselves. We think right thinking people agree with us, everyone else is wrong. I believe what I believe, but I willing to have an open discussion.
Not the zealous they seem to never have a clue, what war on women? We just want to treat them like chattel, just as in English common law. Anyone looking foreign should be glad to show documents. Black kids shouldn't wear hoodies. What my email was joke, I'm not racist. Give me free energy, but don't drill, build, or change the environment.
Any ideas on how our society could engage in a true debate?
