Hitler Parents Grave's Headstone To Be Removed

By GEORGE JAHN 03/30/12 12:06 PM ET AP

VIENNA — The tombstone marking the grave of Adolf Hitler's parents, a place of pilgrimage for neo-Nazis, has been removed from an upper Austrian village cemetery at the request of a descendant, and the grave is ready for a new burial, officials said Friday.

Walter Brunner, mayor of Leonding village, said the stone with the faded black and white portrait photos of Alois and Klara Hitler was taken down Wednesday. Village priest Kurt Pitterschatscher said the rented grave was available for a new lease.

Austrian graves are usually leased for periods of 10 years. The lease is renewable and can be willed to friends or relatives.

Asked whether he would have trouble persuading people to let their loved ones share a grave with the parents of a man whose name is a universal epitome of evil, Pitterschatscher said, "I really haven't thought about it."

Pitterschatscher said the stone and black marble marker, topped by a granite cross, was removed without ceremony by a stonemason hired by the relative, described as an elderly female descendant of Alois Hitler's first wife, Anna. What's left at the site is a white gravel square and a tree.

He said he did not know the woman personally and did not identify her by name but cited her request for termination of the grave lease as saying she was too old to care for it and tired of it "being used for manifestations of sympathy" for Hitler.

Hitler's roots are in Braunau, near Leonding, which is commonly identified as his hometown after the village that he was born in was incorporated into Braunau in 1938. But he and his family moved to Leonding in 1898 when he was 9 and lived there until Hitler was age 15.

Leonding itself first assumed cult status for his followers after Hitler visited his parents' grave and the nearby family house following the 1938 annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany.

The family's Leonding house now warehouses coffins for the cemetery, and Brunner said in a telephone interview that – unlike the more than 100-year-old grave – it did not draw Hitler fans.

Anti-extremist groups say neo-Nazis, sometimes coming in groups, placed flowers and Nazi symbols on the grave.

Robert Eiter, with the Upper Austrian Network Against Racism and Right-Extremism, said the latest incident was on All Saints day, Nov. 1, when an urn was left with the inscription "UnvergeSSlich" – German for "unforgettable" and alluding to Hitler's SS shock troops.

"A lot of flowers and wreaths were deposited there from people who clearly were admirers," he said. "It had to do with the son and not the parents."

Brunner, the mayor, said he was "happy with the decision," to remove the tombstone and Eiter said most Leonding residents also supported it.

Hitler himself committed suicide in his Berlin bunker in 1945. Attempts to burn his body were only partially successful, and his remains were recovered by the Soviets. The find was kept secret, allowing Stalin to perpetuate a Cold War myth that Hitler survived and was hidden in the West.

After decades of uncertainty and disinformation, the demise of the Soviet Union has allowed researchers to establish what they believe is the truth about what happened to the body.

Hitler's jaws and skull were later rediscovered in secret archives in Moscow and went on display in Russia's Federal Archives Service in 2000. The rest of him turned out to have been buried beneath a Soviet army parade ground in the former East German city of Magdeburg.

His remains were exhumed in the 1970s and incinerated. The ashes were flushed into the city's sewage system.

Austria has moved from its postwar portrayal of being Nazi Germany's first victim to acknowledging that it was Hitler's willing partner. Most young Austrians reject Nazi ideology and condemn the part their parents might have played in the Holocaust.

At the same time, the rightist-populist Freedom Party – whose supporters range from those disillusioned with more traditional parties to Islamophobes and Holocaust-deniers – has become Austria's second-strongest political force.

An Anti-Defamation League survey taken this year and published last week said that – while remaining high – anti-Semitic attitudes decreased from 30 percent to 28 percent in Austria compared to 2009.

Studies have shown that Hitler had biological link to Jews and Africans. If this is true, what is the point of these organization? I mean isn't the concept of nazism based on pure race pure blood?

if I remember correctly... the nazis burned hitler after he shot himself beyond recognition
and there have been studies now adays that have proof that the skull the russians hold is the skull of a young person, and there is no way that it would had belong to hitler.
i also believe that when the crazy nazis talked about the 1000 year reich they meant that people will talk about it for 1000 years, but who knows! they were crazy and i am glad it is over, what amazes me is that at this point of age we still see cultural differences amognst ourselves, why cant we co exist with each other? what happened in the past should teach us how not to be in the future, but there are some people that want payback for what their relatives went through ( i dont blame them) but an eye for an eye will leave the world blind....

I started reading this and then I thought. Why do I care about Hitler or his parents? Oh right, I DON"T! I don't think anyone is going to use that grave now.

I didn't know that about Hitler either. What a fitting end for him: flushed down the sewer.

"Most young Austrians reject Nazi ideology and condemn the part their parents might have played in the Holocaust."

Most. Is that like, 51 percent?

I never knew that hitler's parents were being honored by the neo-nazis.
They were dead before hitler got into power and pushed his nazi
policies into place. Also, I do not think that they even were politically
active with hitler. Interesting artical. Learn something new everyday.
I never knew that a grave could ever be re-sold, or leased, by some-
one especially if it was occupied. Even more surprising, the new
lease holders have to share the grave with it's current tenants. What
do they do - flatten out whatever remains that may be left and just drop
the new tenants on top of them?

Actually, so-to-speak "recycling" graves is a common, long practice - I think in all Europe. At least, as a German, that was no surprise at all for me. The reason is obvious: population density. Imagine it was not done like that ... .
Biologically, there is eventually no room in need to be "shared" (with former inhabitants) since after (I looked into some research/reports in German language to learn the precise data) 7 to 30 years there is nothing left of the coffin and the body therein. This (about 30 years) is also the legal minimum time during which the grave must be left untouched. ... "Ashes to ashes ...". Regulations like specifications which woods are used for coffins and which cloth and clothes (all non-synthetic) help with that.
After that time, next of kin/ family can "rent" the place/grave for a longer period. "Rent" reflects that the authorities (be that communities or churches) keep the area neat and clean. So, it all is done with much consideration and piety in mind. I can in this case only suppose that the authorities needed to contact the next of kin anyways to ask if they were interesting in keeping the place maintained.
10:15 PM on 04/02/2012
Regarding the "tourism", consider the legal situation in Austria and Germany: The actual leading regime figures weren't buried/ buried in undisclosed places. The buildings that remained after WWII came and were/are treated with by our governments. Some were dismantled, others fall under undisturbed possession of property rights (they aren't governed under the laws regarding public spaces) .
So, these NNs turn to "symbolic" places or in general to symbols that aren't outlawed. I suppose you know that we have pretty unique laws to ban the use of Nazi-era symbols. For example, they use Weimar- or Wilhelmian era flags, etc. .

I wonder what they do with the bodies? If they re-lease the plot to someone else. Do they exhume the bodies and move them to another location?
02:27 AM on 04/02/2012
According to the artical, whomever leases the plot gets planted
with the remains of hitlers parents. I guess they just flatten out
what is left and the new tenants get dropped on top of them as
there was no mention that the grave will be cleaned out, or, the
existing remains relocated.
03:45 AM on 04/02/2012
I think other bodies are buried on top of the existing ones. I was horrified when my mother in law passed away many years ago (on Easter Sunday). She was buried on top of her husband in a military cemetary, I had no idea until then that is a common practice in military cemetaries. I wonder if Yoko Ono would mind me being buried with John Lennon. There could be a whole new verse to "Imagine". Just joking everyone. I want my own space right next to be best friend, my mom.

Hitler was also one of the first people ever "Profiled" in a behaviorial way.

The behavioral scientists predicted he'd do the bunker thing, that he'd suicide and take his followers with him! It was spot on!!

STUPID I feel that they should of left it their even tho it was hitler and all that still... Yes historical value but also they are dead... who really cares that hitlers parents were buried there. If it was me that died and someone in my family decided to bury me next to them I wouldnt have any disagreements. lol but I would be dead why would I :)
I look at it as they are dead let them have their stone... I think I am going to put that in my will I want to be my grave to be next to hitlers parents haa... (NO i am not related in any way... so please keep your sick pig headed comments to your self) I just dont really care they are dead why be bit**es about it...

wow. the whole point is that neo nazis go and celebrate at the grave and they don't want them around. Get it?
09:01 AM on 04/02/2012
like I said who cares... Let people celebrate what they believe in. People always got to protest in what they dont believe in and stop being so judge mental.. I knew what they were aiming for apparently you didnt know what I was saying... BUT to make it more text book for you... LEAVE the grave there let the people do what they want... Its their life if they want to celebrate it and whatever let them.

You really didnt understand the article, did you?
In Austria, you have to rerent your ancestors graves every 10 years.
Yeah, sounds weird, but thats a thing in Europe because of limited space.
Because of the neo-nazi celebrations, the descendant whose job it was to pay the rent just didnt want to do it anymore.
However, that in its own way is a cop out. Do you really think that if he cared about them he would remove the tombstone? No. This way he gets to feel good that he did a moral thing and doesn't have to pay for a tombstone of people he didnt know in these bad economic times.
So you could say that he is a jerk to his ancestors, but that's not the point you were trying to make. You were trying to make the point that it doesn't matter that Hitler's parents are burried there. But it does matter. It matters to the neo-nazis who come to celebrate and it matters to the family member that has to pay for it.

No I got the point of the article but you misunderstood what I was talking about.. AND at this point not going to get into it again. Could care less...
