MC Hammer's trifecta of successes go without saying. He coined the famous 90s mantra "U Can't Touch This;" taught us all the merits of managing your money well; and, arguably the most significant of all, he left an indelible mark on the world of fashion.
That's a pretty big legacy for the man born Stanley Kirk Burrell on March 30, 1962. The Oakland, California native would go on to sell more than 50 million records worldwide, including follow-up hits like "Pray" and "2 Legit 2 Quit," and earn the title of "forefather" of pop rap.
Hammer's signature look is said to have inspired the hip hop world's "shiny suit" craze and made a resurgence at fashion shows in 2009.
Since their comeback, Hammer (aka harem, genie or parachute) pants have taken on a variety of forms, mainly slimming down around the legs and tightening up around the crotch.
Though Hammer's rep told the Wall Street Journal the rapper's been distancing himself from the once ubiquitous style, we're honoring his 50th birthday with a look at who's rocked it best.
Happy birthday, Stanley Burrell!
