'The Bachelor': Lamar Hurd Aims To Become The First Black Bachelor (VIDEO)

The Bachelor Lamar Hurd

After 16 seasons of being on the air, ABC’s reality dating game show, ā€œThe Bachelorā€ has managed to fulfill a void for various eligible contestants. However to some fans disappointment, the show’s lack of diversity has raised a few questions as to why there has never been a non-white bachelor? Last year show creator, Mike Fleiss told Entertainment Weekly that he and his production team are always looking to cast for ethnic diversity, ā€œit’s just that for whatever reason, they don’t come forward. I wish they would.ā€

Well look no further, Portland-based sportscaster Lamar Hurd is vying to become the show’s first African American hopeful. Initially the multifaceted commentator and entrepreneur was reluctant to apply for the show’s upcoming season, but thanks to his assistant, Tammy, Hurd has a different point of view.

ā€œIt all started when I was at Tammy’s house [my assistant], and we’re having a barbeque,ā€ he explained in his YouTube audition clip. ā€œShe’s there with her sisters, her son, the whole family’s there. And I see some chuckling going on at the end of the table wondering what it is. I didn’t make too much of it cause they’re always cracking jokes. One of her sisters blurted out, ā€˜Tammy, you’ve been trying to get Lamar on the bachelor?’ So of course I looked down the table to try to see what’s really going on. And come to find out, she’s been trying to get me on.ā€

ā€œWhen it first came up I shot the whole idea down. I said, ā€˜Tammy, first of all you have to look at it like this, they never had a black bachelor. Let’s say I wanted to go on there, and was willing to do it. They have not ever had a black bachelor.’ So that was the first thing.ā€ In spite of the show’s history, Hurd has recently launched a campaign in hopes of landing him on season 17. If indeed the Oregon native is chosen to appear as the show’s leading man, he admitted that he would proudly accept the offer and hopefully find his love interest.

ā€œIt doesn’t matter what we’re doing, it’s who I’m doing it with. So if it’s someone that I’m in love with then we’re going to have a good time.ā€

Check out Lamar Hurd’s audition clip below.

This appears to be a QUALITY gentleman. I would watch the show because of his character, genuine humanity and audience appeal. What a great audition video. C'mon producers, give the man the contract.

I hope the producers will decide to have Lamar as the next bachelor. He seems to be a quality man and a lot more sparkling than many former bachelors. I would love to see him on the show.
It would literally be a lot more colorful than the usual shows. I wish I would have a chance to meet someone like him in my own age (64). I certainly would be delighted and I am known for impeccable standards. What about a show for more mature people? I will apply to be the bachelorette if I meet people like Lamar - only older.

I think Lamar came across as an excellent Bachelor. I mean really, when you're with someone for 20, 30, 40, 50 years, the important thing is who they are and how they treat you and everyone else. What a plus that he's a handsome man.

Lamar has instant AND long term appeal. You go Lamar!!!!!!!!

I would watch the bachelor if Lamar was the bachelor! I quit watching a couple years ago as I didn't like the men or women they had on the show. I believe the time is now to have a black man on the show and I know there would be just as many white women interested in him as the black women. He sounds like a really down to earth great guy. So come on Bachelor, lets add some real spice to the show and make Lamar the nextBachelor!

Ya know that step forward towards the equality you all think you dont have is to stop announcing "The First Black this and The First Black that"
12:23 PM on 05/20/2012
Wouldn't have to announce it if it were the norm...

Oh my gosh, never really thought about it, but true, no Black bachelors. Lamar is a really nice looking guy. Of course the same thing will happen....pick out a girl, then break up, but I guess it is just the process people watch it for now. (I have given up on the show though.)
08:17 PM on 04/03/2012
Never really thought about it??? Wow, it's been so obvious to me for the longest time.
