Angela Corey, Prosecutor In Trayvon Martin Case, Known As Tough

SANFORD, Fla. -- The special prosecutor leading the investigation into the shooting death of an unarmed black teen by a neighborhood watch volunteer is known for her tough tactics aimed at locking up criminals for long sentences and making it difficult to negotiate light plea bargains.

Furthermore, 57-year-old Angela Corey has handled hundreds of homicide cases involving the justifiable use of deadly force – experience that could prove invaluable. It will be up to Corey whether to charge 28-year-old George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman who says he was defending himself when he fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin during a scuffle. Martin was unarmed as he walked from a convenience store, and the case has become a racial flashpoint with protesters across the nation calling for his arrest. Zimmerman's father is white, his mother Hispanic.

Police did not initially charge Zimmerman because of a state law allowing someone to use deadly force if his life is in danger.

Corey, who also could call a grand jury to decide whether to file charges against Zimmerman, is known in legal circles as being passionate about victim's rights and having clubby ties to law enforcement. She won the State Attorney's Office seat after being fired from her job at the office a few years ago, beating the handpicked successor of the state attorney who fired her.

Corey was appointed the special prosecutor in the case by Gov. Rick Scott after State Attorney Norm Wolfinger, whose district covers Sanford, recused himself.

Since she took on the case a dozen days ago, Corey and her team of two prosecutors and an investigator have interviewed witnesses in Sanford and visited the scene of the shooting. She also has instituted a media blackout, refusing to comment on any aspect of the case as of this week. Corey refused to take any questions about the Trayvon Martin case during a telephone interview on Friday.

Defense attorneys who have gone up against Corey in court say she is up for the job.

"She is a tough-minded prosecutor who is prepared, thorough and a very good advocate for the prosecution in the court," said Ann Finnell, a Jacksonville defense attorney who has faced off against Corey during a trial. Finnell also was on the legal team for Casey Anthony, the Orlando mother acquitted of killing her 2-year-old daughter.

As a courtroom prosecutor, Corey was an aggressive advocate. When she ran for the State Attorney's Office in 2008, she made prosecuting juvenile criminals a top priority and celebrated her close ties to law enforcement agencies – so much so that in its endorsement of Corey's opponent, The Florida Times-Union newspaper in Jacksonville wrote: "Is Corey's relationship with the sheriff and the unions too close? Yes."

As the Jacksonville-based State Attorney for three northeast Florida counties, she has been known for filing more charges, bringing more cases to trial and being less likely to use a grand jury than her predecessor. Florida prosecutors are required to use grand juries only in first-degree murder degrees. But many prosecutors send high-profile or controversial cases to grand juries to avoid the political fallout of an unpopular decision.

"It would be fair to say that her office, when faced with the choice, files as many counts and charges as they believe they can prove ... which tends to make their prosecutions more complex and expose defendants to substantially more sentences," said A. Russell Smith, a Jacksonville defense attorney who is a past president of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. He attended law school with Corey and considers her a close friend.

"It also makes cases more difficult to negotiate. There are more charges and prosecutors are less willing to drop counts in order to find a fair and negotiated plea."

Corey, a Jacksonville native, also teaches classes for prosecutors and police officers about interrogations and the justifiable use of deadly force and is active in the local Republican party.

But she does have her share of detractors, including her former boss and predecessor, former State Attorney Harry Shorstein.

Shorstein fired Corey in 2006 from the office she had worked in for the previous 25 years. He said the firing stemmed from a complaint from an intern who claimed Corey was unprofessional and profane. He asked Corey to respond to a professor who had brought the complaint to his attention, but Corey instead sent a letter criticizing the professor for communicating the complaint, according to Shorstein.

"I don't want to sound like an old, tough Marine, but if I'm your boss, and I order you to do something that is appropriate and legal, and you don't do it, one of us has to go," Shorstein said.

Corey disputed that account, saying she was fired because she would not agree to drop her run for State Attorney in 2008.

"They cooked up so many things, it was almost unbelievable," she said.

A job evaluation from 2006 provided by Corey said "Angela is one of the best" in reference to her litigation skills. It said she goes out of her way to help others but also warned her against giving the impression that police officers could appeal to her with any decision about which they were unhappy. The evaluation is signed by Shorstein.

Corey also has been criticized for bringing a case to a grand jury that indicted a 12-year-old boy for first-degree murder in the beating death of his 2-year-old half-brother instead of allowing it to be handled in juvenile court. Protesters marched outside her office and delivered a petition with 180,000 names opposed to the decision.

Corey said she was seeking a middle ground that would get Fernandez out from the limitations of juvenile court, where there is no guarantee he could serve a continuous incarceration sentence until he is 22 if found guilty.

"If life in prison is inappropriate for a 12-year-old, but neither is juvenile, let's look for middle ground," she said.

the very fact that the lady claims to have had no pressure to charge Zimmerman is BS. The police didn't charge him. When the full audio tape was made available their was obviously a scuffle of some kind going on which is probably why police didn't charge the guy. If not for media playing it up for their rating he'd be free.

How about sticking to the topic. I don't think you can compare a home invasion where the perpetrator is clearly guilty to a case in which a kid was walking unarmed carrying candy.

Angela Corey will be fair. Her concern will be the law, and finding out what crimes were committed. She is known as a victims advocate, yet she is not anti-gun, or anti-cop, and will not be serving such agendas. She is tough enough to take what the press and public throw at her.

My initial OPINION based on what I have heard and seen in the press (not entirely reliable - see above) is that Zimmerman escalated the situation by following Martin. As a CCW permitted person myself, I think he was wrong to engage him if he indeed did. If you are carrying you have some responsibility in my understanding not to create situations that will be potentially hostile. Following someone usually does. I have been followed before and thought my life was in danger. The whole time I was thinking about what you will do if they actually got in my personal space were I not able to run fast enough etc.

I think we need to evaluate this case on its own before changing "Stand Your Ground". It very well might be that this just does not apply here and if it does Corey has prosecuted against this defence many times and is familiar with the ins and outs of it.

There is no law against following someone . the someone has no right to put their hands on anyone...

martin did not belong in that gated community it was his father's girlfriend's house and they said he was there as he was suspended from school........... he perhaps was lost.. walking around...maybe wandering around talking on phone or even smoking....but it was raining and he was on in direct line from 7 eleven to father's girlfriends' house. his father should have told him there are neighborhood watch people in that gated community.........
The only thing corey did try to convey was the charges could change.... perhaps up perhaps down...... and if it goes to trial zimmerman would plead self defense........
and corey would not be the prosecutor.
and on one would want anything but a fair trial for zimmerman.....as he is presumed innocent until proven guilty....

and there is no way florida will be able to proven 2nd degee. .

Floridians have an idea of the real reason Corey is dragging her feet on an arrest warrant, not only George Zimmerman would be on trial but the "stand your ground" law would be on trial as well. If Corey has the courage it takes to file an arrest warrant in this case, she will be a hero in more ways than one

Do we all agree (black, white, or hispanic) that based on the 911 tapes, if this were our own son, we would want an arrest even if it did not lead to a conviction? Would we want this to be looked into further based on again the 911 calls. Oh and remember, this happened to your 17 year old son.

Number one, this could happen to my white autistic son:
1) because he wears a hoodie and headphones and has sco-called "suspicious behaviors"
2) because he lives in Florida too
Anybody who lives in Florida better wake up and smell the coffee and demand an arrest of George Zimmerman. Like you say, we need the trial more than the conviction, the precedence of no charges and no arrest is extremely dangerous "permission" for future abuses of "stand your ground" and false "self defense" arguments
07:18 AM on 04/04/2012
My point exactly! We cannot send the message that this flawed law is sending. It only seemingly protects the survivor and mutes the deceased. Many people will start, as you said, repeating this and making sure they did as Zimmerman did and try to get away with murder under a flawed law. THIS LAW MUST BE AMENDED! It makes us look crazy for even honoring it in this day. thanks for your comment...we do need to wake up and see that this could happen to any of us one morning:PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE!
10:18 PM on 04/05/2012
No, we don't. Martin turned what would have been a routine contact into a life or death struggle. If my son attacked an armed man and got himself shot for doing so I would be upset, sure. But I wouldn't blame the guy he attacked.

And, you'd be perfectly okay that the person who killed your child just said it was self defense and went home the same night? I'm afraid I'm going to have to call BS on that.
08:36 AM on 04/06/2012
Wow!! You were there? Do they know that you are a star eyewitness in this case that actually saw Trayvon initiate (and rightfully so since a suspicious man was following him) the deadly struggle knowing that he only had a bag of skittles and ice tea to defend himself. The audacity in your post is alarming. What did Trayvon do to make him suspicious? black kid walking with hoodie. Course he is up to no good right. WRONG. Coming from the store talking to his girlfriend. You would be a horrible parent if what you said is true about saying your son deserved what he got under these questionable circumstances. But you are one of those folks that are skilled at being ignorant. God bless you and may you defend your children! Not mad at you ...jusyt praying that karma never meets you!

I agree.. I'm not sure what her strategy is here, or what the game plan is, by getting buddy buddy with the cops, who didn't go after this guy zimmerman.. possibly, her game plan is to be buddy buddy, to get them to be more cooperative... with the end goal of getting this killer behind bars..

Oh, she is tough alright. There has been a petition circulated to have her removed because she decided to try a 12-year old boy as and adult: (she wants to give him life without parole)
"Prosecutor Angela Corey said: 'We have to protect the public from this young man'. She recommended that he face trial as an adult. The 12-year-old has been examined by two forensic psychologists who found him to be emotionally underdeveloped but essentially reformable despite a tough life.
Also charged: Biannela Susana, mother to Cristian Fernandez and David Galarriago, is charged with negligent homicide in the death of her toddler."
Christian was a result of Suana's rape.

Did she use a grand jury to help her prosecute the 12 year old? This one was very steep. I cringed at this one. This made her look like a savage but we don't see from her lenses.
This though is a case of a 28 year old pursuing a 17 year old child who ends up dead. If this were your son, wouldn't you want him prosecuted and let the jury decide if he acted under the law...after hearing the 911 tapes. it would be a great gain to be color blind when looking at this case. Here is a unarmed child dead...911 tapes leaving doubt that it was in fact self defense. the only voice this kid has are those tapes that speak so loudly for him. Does he deserve the right to have his killer tried? This could have been your son, brother or nephew. What would you do? Be careful. Do unto others as we would have done to us.

Maybe she is what we need to ensure that Martin receives justice. As for her case aginst the 12-year old - she seems to be ruthless:
- "Another petition has been started to ask for the removal of State Attorney Angela Corey because she misled the public when she said he would not stand trial (he stands trial on February 27) and she was not seeking life without parole (life without parole is the mandatory sentence). Additionally, Corey has said in the media and to the public she chose not to try Cristian in juvenile court because he would serve less than two years. The Southern Poverty Law Center released a statement countering this claim, explaining that realistically in the juvenile system he would be under the court's jurisdiction until he was 21. If convicted, Cristian will be the youngest person ever sentenced to life without parole in America." [change.org]

Bottom line, things will always be about race in this country. Those that suffer the most are Black men. We have to deal with not having gang colors (crips and bloods), we must speak in a soft tone when pulled over by cops for no other reason, We must be clean cut and well shaven because anything else (beard, dreads, afros, braids, mohwaks...etc) will be perceived as threatening, We have to make sure that under no circumstances that we are walking, driving or riding in a predominantly white neighborhood cause we will be questioned. Non people of color(whites) can pretty much go, and do what ever they please to anyone and in any neighborhood and they they will not be questioned as to whether or not they belong. It 's just not happening. And when they are they are in shock as to why they are being spoken to in the first place. From my own experiences I have seen non people of color(mostly whites) throw temper tantrums in from of police officers and all they got away with was a traffic violation while on the flip side I have seen men of color(mostly Black) get told to get out of their vehicles and searched just because they said" What's the problem officer?" when pulled over for a minor traffic. Whites just don't want to admit that they have as Paul Mooney said: "the complexion for the protection" in almost every aspect of society.

I like this comment. Can anyone else here admit that there is a difference between how most black men are treated as opposed their white counterparts? It is good to have an intelligent discussion on this issue.
07:15 PM on 04/02/2012
Thanks. And what gets me is non people of color(mostly) whites try to act as if they are going through some sort of backlash themselves which is clearly not the case. I can take a homeless white male, give him a hair cut, shave and a nice suit and before he even opens his mouth, people will automatically assume he belongs where ever he wants to be. A black man can have a degree from Harvard be clean cut and well spoken and even if he starts out speaking the kings English, cops as well as people depending on where he is will question about what is he doing in the neighborhood, how long will he be there, or if he is in a store they will ask can I help you or tell him" the sale rack is over there" where once again non people of color can get waited on hand and foot and it turns out that they are not buying anything and if they are they are going to the sale rack. Amazing, The Trayvon Martin case has once again exposed racial hatred that many non people of color(mostly whites) would like swept under the rug
