'Dumb & Dumber 2' Confirmed: Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels Returning, According To Director

'Dumb & Dumber 2' Is Happening, Says Director

For a while, it seemed like the chances for a sequel to the 1994 hit comedy "Dumb & Dumber" was one out of a hundred, or even one out of a million. But it turned out there was a chance. And at a junket for "The Three Stooges," the original film's co-director Peter Farrelly said that not only is a sequel set to go into production this September, but original stars Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels will reprise their roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne.

According to ComingSoon.net, who broke the story, Farrelly was clear about the reality of the sequel. "We're getting set to shoot 'Dumb & Dumber 2' in September," he told the website. "It's the first sequel we've ever done and we've got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back."

But wait: wasn't there already a sequel to "Dumb & Dumber," the completely forgettable "Dumb and Dumberer" that detailed the origin story of Harry and Lloyd? Don't worry about it, said Farrelly, who co-wrote and co-directed the original film with his brother Bobby. "We did not do 'Dumb and Dumberer,'" he said. "That was a studio thing."

"Dumb and Dumberer" was not even the first time a sequel to the comedy had been ordered. At one point, "South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone were hired to write a sequel, soon after the original was a hit. (They eventually turned down the job.) The original movie also spawned a short-lived children's cartoon.

The idea of the bumbling Harry and Lloyd as middle-aged doofuses may be hard to imagine, but the famously sequel-shy Carrey appears to be fully behind the project, according to Farrelly. Previously, Carrey had declined to appear in sequels to films he starred in, but earlier this year, EW reported that Carrey planned on starring in a sequel to his 2003 hit "Bruce Almighty."

Daniels, on the other hand, is currently busy on the new Aaron Sorkin HBO drama "The Newsroom," on which he stars as an Olbermann-esque cable news anchor. His role in "Dumb and Dumber" was quite out of character for the actor, who is mostly known for his dramatic work, as Chris Farley famously reminded us.

UPDATE: The original version of this post indicated that Carrey will star in a sequel to "Evan Almighty." In fact, Carrey will appear in a sequel to "Bruce Almighty," the precursor to "Evan" that Carrey did not appear in.
