SANFORD, Fla., April 2 (Reuters) - George Zimmerman will surrender to authorities if he is charged in the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, his attorney said on Monday.

"If he's charged, he will be arrested and he will turn himself in," attorney Craig Sonner told Reuters in a telephone interview. "However it goes, he's not hiding from the authorities. If he is asked, he will turn himself in. There's not going to be a manhunt or anything like that."

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, fatally shot Martin on the night of Feb. 26, saying he had acted in self defense. Police released him without charge and said there was no evidence to contradict Zimmerman's story that he was attacked by Martin, 17.

The case has riveted the country, prompting demonstrations in numerous cities demanding that Zimmerman be arrested. Critics believe Zimmerman, who is a white Hispanic, was motivated by racial profiling in deciding to follow Martin and that race played a role in police accepting his version of events.

Sonner and Zimmerman's relatives have said in interviews that he is not a racist and has been unfairly vilified. They said he feared for his life during his altercation with Martin and was justified in using deadly force.

Zimmerman remains free but in hiding. Special prosecutor Angela Corey has taken over the case and could announce soon whether she intends to charge him with a crime.

"We're preparing for trial," Sonner said. "We've done all we can except ask for discovery (evidence-sharing) from the state, which is not available to us yet" because Zimmerman has not been charged.

INVESTIGATION UNDER WAY

Following intense public criticism and a vote of "no confidence" by the Sanford City Commission, Police Chief Bill Lee resigned temporarily on March 22. He said the uproar surrounding him had become a distraction to the investigation.

That same day, State Attorney Norm Wolfinger also said he was taking himself off the case "with the intent of toning down the rhetoric."

The special prosecutor's team took over, retracing many of the steps previously taken by police.

Sanford police and Corey's office have declined all comment in recent days.

Neither Sonner nor Benjamin Crump, a lawyer representing Martin's family, would speculate on when the investigation might conclude.

Reuters has observed Corey's investigators in several places, including the neighborhood of the shooting, where they interviewed witnesses; the Sanford police station; and a hotel where they interviewed Trayvon Martin's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton.

Trayvon Martin was returning to his father's fiancee's home at a gated community a little more than a month ago when Zimmerman saw him walking in the rain wearing a hooded sweatshirt and considered him suspicious. Against the advice of a police operator, Zimmerman followed Martin and an altercation occurred. Witnesses heard screams for help and then a gunshot, parts of which were captured on 911 calls by neighbors.

Forensic experts say the voice heard on the tape calling for help was not Zimmerman's, according top a report in Monday's Orlando Sentinel. The newspaper asked voice recognition experts to examine the screams and compare them to Zimmerman's voice on calls he made to 911 before the shooting. The results did not match.

No tests were done comparing the tape with Trayvon Martin's voice because the newspaper could not obtain a sample of the teen's voice.

Zimmerman told police that Martin approached him, punched him in the nose and slammed his head against a concrete walkway before he fired in self-defense. (Reporting by Daniel Trotta; Editing by David Adams and Bill Trott)

I have come to the conclusion that the reason he has not been charged yet is because they are trying to gather enough evidence for a capital charge. Nothing else makes sense.

Then they must convene a grand jury, and the State Attorney's office has stated that they will not convene a grand jury.

Sure he will.... Just like he did when he said ok to stop following Trayvon. I wouldn't be surprised to find out he is out of the country on his daddies dime.

Do you know for a fact he did NOT stop following.... Do you know for a fact Zimmerman made the FIRST PHYSICAL bodily attack on the 6" 3" kid? No you don't. If he turned himself in today they have nothing to hold him on. They NEED a case. Apparently the grand Jury will decide that based on the facts you are not privy to. INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty in the USA

The Feds took on this case because Zimmerman has a 50 percent chance of walking. The Feds may have enough evidence to charge him with racial profiling. He may walk on state level because of tainted evidence and no one knows who threw the first punch. They say that the Prosecutor is a monster in court and very good. I believe that Zimmermans lawyer doesn't have a clue. He cannot win against the state and the Feds. He will not win against both. Zimmerman may not be racist but the Feds may prove racial profiling with previous actions by him, such as the other 911 calls. We shall see.

Racist doesn't have nothing to do if you has black friends or not black friends also Don t forget you have the right the speech according to The Constitution so you can say: Dirty word Race X. Under twisted point of view of racism in USA anyone can be charge by Racism expect Black people.

I said previous actions by him such as other 911 calls. Meaning his "actions", not his "words". His actions during the 911 calls. What is the highest percentage (race) of people he called 911 on ?
Actions, actions, and actions.

I'm confused! They are talking like he's doing this out of the kindness of his heart. Zimmerman isn't doing anybody any favors by turning himself in after he's charged. If he's charged with the murder what other choice does he have besides turn himself in unless he wants to become the "fugitive/gangster" Trayvon was according to his logic. Not this law abiding, neighborhood watching, citizen of the year. I mean, he wouldn't dare break the law by trying to flee when he's the law enforcer in this case.

the special prosecutor states that she has in her possession the weapon along with zimmerman's clothing. it is fair to state that SPD did a horrible job of preserving the integrity of physical evidence however.

Lawyer says his client (I still can't stand to type his name) will turn himself in if charged. The rest of the sentence might be ............turn himself into a citizen of ( inset foreign country here ) because he ran out of people to blame for his behavior. My client has elected to turn himself into a citizen of that country to support his belief that immigration works both ways. As my client has stated he does an enormous amount of community service he is turning himself into a Neighborhood Watch Captain in his new town of....................... Has anyone seen his gun??
Give us a break.

I agree. I think it has to do with the moderator. You can please some of the people some of the time, but can't please all the people all of the time. I wish everyone would understand that it's not our opposing views that gets us in trouble, it's the personal attacks. It shows lack of civility and although it may make you feel good to throw your little grenades just to see how many people you can upset, we are missing out on discussing views that should be addressed. May God bless us, bless the USA and forgive our ignorance. We still have a long way to go.

How does ZImmerman sleep at night knowing that he stalked and killed a child, got off, and living his life? Bottom line is a kid was wrongfully killed, a mother is without her son and this man is free as a bird. Obviously the justice system has miserably failed...as they say..justice delayed is justice denied. Although he may never go to jail just remember that God will ultimately justify this case.
09:18 AM on 04/04/2012
wrongfully killed? he attacked zimmerman..if someone punched you in the nose, and slammed your head against the ground..what would you do? who said trayvon wasnt gonna kill him???? huh???

Correction, if Zimmerman had done as dispatch had told him to, this would now be a non issue...................Stand down.............quit following, stalking..........let the police take care of this. A young man would be alive today, if only, zimmerman wasn't playing cops and robbers with a real gun, there was NO robber, only a man on a self appointed power trip with a gun. HUH??????????????
10:24 AM on 04/04/2012
If that happened to me, I would make a mental note not to stalk people, brandishing a fire-arm, in the dead of night anymore because I saw too many Charles Bronson movies as a child.  That's what I would do.  Zimmerman, however, concluded his night of stalking by actually killing someone.
