Chihuahua, Hamster Among Stolen Goods In All-Day Shoplifting Spree, Cops Say

A Florida woman and her 13-year-old accomplice were apparently attempting the four-paw discount when they allegedly stole a chihuahua puppy, a hamster and $3,000 in merchandise during an all-day shoplifting spree.

Authorities busted Niccole Rae Ruston, of Winter Haven, on Saturday when employees at the Belk's department store caught the 33-year-old woman stealing items valued at $635. Authorities found the other stolen goods in Ruston's vehicle, according to a police report obtained by The Huffington Post.

The stealing marathon also included stops at Walgreen's, Macy's, Pier 1 Imports and Hibbett Sports, police said.

The chihuahua puppy and hamster, bother reported missing from a local pet store, were found in Ruston's home. Authorities said that Ruston took the dog -- priced at $540 -- and placed it in her purse before dropping a hamster into the same bag.

Ruston is charged with two counts of grand theft, four counts of petit theft, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and child abuse. The 13-year-old was taken to the Polk Juvenile Assessment Center and charged with shoplifting as well as petit theft.
