Albuquerque Lightning Picture: Roch Hart, Amateur Photographer, Snaps Dazzling Image Of Lightning (PHOTO)

Roch Hart, a retired police officer and the owner of a Jeep tour company in New Mexico, says on his company's website that "photography has become a serious hobby" for him.

And after seeing the amazing photos of lightning that he snapped in Albuquerque, it would be difficult to disagree.

The photo below, which is one of several Hart snapped, was taken during an 11-minute lightning storm over the city.

While lightning may dazzle our senses and leave us in awe, it can certainly be dangerous. According to the National Weather Service, lightning strikes are responsible for about 54 reported deaths per year in the United States. About 10 percent of those who are struck by lightning are killed.

The New York State Department of Health advises those who find themselves in thunder or lightning storms to seek shelter immediately. When inside, people should stay away from open windows as well as sinks, showers, toilets and appliances, as lightning can "flow through these..." and "'jump' to a person," according to the Department of Health. Landline telephones connected to the wall should also be avoided as the current can flow through the wires, though cordless and cellular phones can still be used safely.

For more, including what to do if unable to seek shelter in a lightning storm and how to help people who've been struck, click over to the New York State Department of Health website.

Not to detrat from the beauty of this shot...

however after reading all the comments, only 3 people figured that this was camera trickery. This shot has been achieved with at least 2 different techniques: First off a wide angle perspective lens was used, then a slow ISO setting on the camera. Place your camera on a tripod, trigger a very long exposure, and capture multiple exposures on one frame.

+Technique two: would be do use post Digital HDR photography, which allows you to superimpose a set of shots onto one. this is accomplished by HDR Efex Pro , Photomatix, Photoshop CS5 HDR Pro. or other similar software applications. Ramping up the drama!

Simple when you know how....

Hi, I am the photographer. This was not a wide angle. But I did take several shots of single lightning stikes and merged them into one. The shots are real, from the same setting, but they are merged. IF, I had kept the lens open for 20 mintues then this would be the shot. But that would blow out the city light. Therefore, single shots at 30 second exposures with a f-stop at my lowest resulted in these captures. In the original story I did convey this. No trickery and in my original Flickr series this was conveyed. I just thought it would be fun to do a series laying each shot on top of each other to this point. Hope that helps.

I used to climb on the roof of my house to watch the lightning in the valley. Not safe, but memorable.

Snap implies short exposure. But presumably this was done over a good few seconds, hence the. Numerous lightning strikes. lovely result but not the reaction speed test implied by the headline.

This just astounds me because I do not have lightning quick reflexes (get it?) and I would not be capable of taking such a stunning photo. And they have the nerve to call him amateur?

Too bad he had no comments on his camera: first thing mi esposa asked, of course. But, ¡wow!, and we're not that far away, here north in Santa Fe. Didn't even cut off the local TV broadcasts.
