France: Suspected Islamist Militants Arrested In Second Raid

PARIS, April 4 (Reuters) - Police arrested 10 suspected Islamist militants in dawn raids across France on Wednesday after a shooting spree by an al Qaeda-inspired gunman prompted President Nicolas Sarkozy to order a security clampdown, just ahead of an April 22 election.

The DCRI domestic intelligence service, supported by elite police commandos, carried out arrests in the southern cities of Marseille and Valence, two smaller towns in the southwest, and in the northeastern town of Roubaix, a police source said.

The raids, which followed Friday's arrest of 19 suspects, came 13 days after police snipers shot dead 23-year-old gunman Mohamed Merah, who had killed three Jewish school children, a rabbi and three soldiers in a spate of attacks around Toulouse.

"Those arrested have a similar profile to Mohamed Merah," a local police source said. "They are isolated individuals who are self-radicalised."

He said the suspects were tracked on Islamist forums expressing extreme views and said they were preparing to travel to areas including Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Sahel belt of West Africa to wage jihad (holy war). Some of those arrested had already visited these areas and returned to France, the source said.

Sarkozy, who faces an uphill task to win re-election in an April-May two-round vote, has vowed to root out any form of militancy following Merah's killing spree.

Television channels showed images of the early morning raids, with police shown taking suspects away handcuffed and with their faces covered. Officials also confiscated bags and other items.

Some French media had been tipped off about the raids and police did not cordon off the areas ensuring mass coverage.

Thirteen of the 19 people arrested last Friday are alleged to have links to radical French Islamist group Forsane Alizza (Knights of Pride). They are being investigated on suspicion of terrorism, the Paris public prosecutor said on Tuesday.

Wednesday's raids were not directly linked to either those arrests or the Merah attacks, the source said.

POLITICAL EXPLOITATION
The Toulouse killings have lifted domestic security up the political agenda 2-1/2 weeks before the April 22 first-round vote and may have improved Sarkozy's chances against Socialist rival Francois Hollande, who he trails in polls for the crucial May 6 runoff.

Sarkozy, a former hardline interior minister, has been accused by some opponents of capitalising on the Islamist threat for electoral purposes even though only 20 percent of voters consider it their main concern, surveys show.

Centrist election candidate Francois Bayrou accused the government of using the situation for its own political ends.

"It's fine that the state fulfills its responsibility by controlling and banning gatherings or suspected groups," he told i-Tele television. "But I find it surprising that it takes place in front of journalists who have been asked to come."

Speaking on RTL radio, Hollande declined to be drawn on whether he thought the raids were politically driven.

"If there are suspicions and risks, then they must be acted upon," Hollande said. "But why do it after a terrorist act? I am not questioning what is being done, but maybe we could have done more before," he said.

Polls, however, show that more than 70 percent of voters approved of Sarkozy's handling of the incident, with his ratings inching up since the Merah affair, although he would still lose to Socialist Hollande in t he May 6 runoff.

France is the world leader in defense of secularism.
Luckily, their political structures and security apparatus were able to withstand the multicultural doctrines which rendered other Euro states practically defenseless.
Compare and contrast.
U.K.: Radical Jihadist clerics Abu Hamza was arrested and then set free ( just in time for London Olympics) because of some legalese and hand -wringing.
Example 2:
France: Radical Jihadist cleric Abdelkader Bouziane was to be deported. French court overruled the deportation order on legal grounds.
Minister de Villepin quickly changed the law—and Bouziane was outta France on the next plane.
Voila. THAT"S the way to do it!

France has been flooded with Islamist militants, and now reaps the consequence. Soon the Eiffel Tower will become a kiosk for burkas and korans. Get yours today

that is good ! France, Spain, and Germany now reap the rewards of allowing muslims to immigrate. They criticized us when we began to check on them here. My own community had a cfo muslim for a record warehouse who stole 350K in 98 and help fund the WTC attack. I did some structural work on the warehouse and this ahole would come out to re-negotiate my contract after it was signed, wanting me to lower price and talk only to him. I explained he coud kiss my ass, figured he would jam my payment, I immediately hired an attorney to run this fool to the ground.

I doubt that anyone outside nuttiest far left and radical Islamist circles has problems with cracking down on these dangerous individuals and the extremist ideology they follow. It should also please the normal, law abiding Muslims when there is a clear line drawn between the extremists and them.
Another related matter , I have a very negative opinion of Islam and terrorism doesn´t even make the top 3 concerns. The politically correct atmosphere advocated by the left should not suppress legitimate criticism of any religions which is a sign of modernity in itself.

Wrong.
Various moderate Muslim and bourgeois liberal groups regularly defend Islamists on grounds ranging from Islamophobia to Chomskism.

If someone has problems with this kind of crackdown, I would include them in "nuttiest far left" and "radical Islamist circles".

Stop lying. No one defends radical islamists. Stop conflating defending Muslims as a people with defending radical Islamists that wish to cause harm to others.

These GIPN lads are not to be trifled with. They were organized as a response to Palestinian Munich Olympics massacre. At least something good came out of that.

That picture is hilarious. What is going on with that hooded figure and why are they pointing to his back in a weird way? I laughed and then realized they arrested militants. Now I'm not laughing nearly as hard or at anything in particular.
