WATCH: Colbert Catches Santorum Telling Blatant Lie

On Tuesday's "Colbert Report," Stephen Colbert caught Rick Santorum telling a bold-faced lie about California colleges, and had quite a bit of fun poking fun at a candidate whose "facts" are about as dependable as an email forward sent by a distant relative.

"Just reading something last night from the state of California," Santorum said at a campaign stop. "Seven or eight of the California system of universities don't even teach an American history course. It's not even available to be taught."

Even though the truthiness factor of "California hates America and therefore doesn't teach American history" certainly feels spot-on, the facts don't quite line up. "The only thing that would be outrageous would be if this were true," Colbert said, before rolling a clip of the chair of the history department at Cal State East Bay expressing confusion of why Santorum couldn't simply look up the course catalog online before spewing such misstatements. In fairness, Santorum may not be particularly keen on Googling things.

But Colbert admitted that Santorum was partially correct, in that UC San Francisco does not teach American history... because it's a medical school. Colbert expressed hope that when Santorum visits the Golden State for its primary, he does not have any stomach problems. He deadpanned, "I don't think the doctors out there are as qualified as Santorum to pull things out of his ass."
