In another startling development, the man who alleged to police that Josh Powell bragged he "could kill someone ... and not get caught" has taken his story to ABC-affiliate KTVX in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The media outlet did not name the man but ABC News has identified him as Scott Hardman.

Speaking with KTVX, Hardman said the conversation took place at a 2008 Christmas party, roughly a year before the disappearance of Powell's wife, Susan Cox Powell.

"He was basically telling me about how the best way to dispose of a body would be down a mineshaft like a vertical one," Hardman said in the KTVX interview. "It would be the best way of disposing one because they're so unstable."

Hardman said Powell was obsessed with television crime shows and credited them with teaching him how to get away with murder.

Susan Powell was reported missing by her family on Dec. 7, 2009, when she failed to show up for her job as a stockbroker at Wells Fargo Financial. Josh Powell told police he had been camping with their two children, then ages 2 and 4, and had last seen his wife around midnight. Suspicious of his story, investigators named Powell a "person of interest" in his wife's disappearance. Not long after, Powell and his two children moved back to his hometown of Puyallup, Wash.

Hardman said when he learned of Susan Powell's disappearance, he told police about the conversation he allegedly had with her husband.

"It was like a year later," Hardman told KTVX. "All of a sudden Susan was missing, it was like, 'Whoa, are you kidding me? Did we really have this conversation a year ago?' and I had no idea."

Hardman's tip prompted police to search dozens of abandoned mines outside of Ely, Nev., but they found no evidence that Susan Powell's body had been disposed of in a shaft.

On Feb. 5, police say Josh Powell attacked his two boys, Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5, with a hatchet and then ignited his home, killing the three of them in a gas-fueled explosion.

Pierce County sheriff's deputies and Graham firefighters work through the wreckage of a home in Graham, Wash. where the bodies of Josh Powell and his two sons were found on Feb. 5, 2012 in a double-homicide suicide. The boys had just been brought by a Child Protective Services worker to Powell's home for a supervised visit when police say the dad deliberately blew up the house. A judge had denied the previous week a request by Powell to regain custody of his sons, who had been living with the parents of his missing wife, Susan.

  • Pierce County sheriff's officials said it appears Josh Powell used an accelerant to increase the power of a gas fire that he intentionally set to kill himself and his two sons inside his Graham, Wash., home on Feb. 5, 2012. The saga of the Powell family began in 2009 when Josh Powell reported that his wife, Susan, had gone missing. That night he claimed he took his sons on an overnight camping trip in freezing temperatures.

Since that time, a mountain of evidence has emerged that supports law enforcement's decision to name Josh Powell the prime suspect in his wife's disappearance. The most recent clue emerged earlier today and involved Josh Powell's father, Steve.

According to The Salt Lake Tribune, a former employer of Steve Powell has confirmed that Powell called in sick to work on Dec. 8 and 9, 2009 -- the days immediately following Susan Powell's disappearance. Those days would coincide with Josh Powell's rental of a Ford Focus from the Salt Lake International Airport. He put more than 800 miles on the vehicle before he returned it on Dec. 10, 2009.

West Valley City police have declined to elaborate on the most recent development, but Chief Thayle Nielsen did tell the Tribune that he suspects Steve Powell and "a few others" could have been involved in Susan Powell's disappearance.

On Sept. 22, 2011, Steve Powell was arrested on 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of possessing an image of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Powell has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

People tend to blame the West Valley police department for not arresting him and bring him to court. It is the local DA 's job to decide if somone is charged and brought to trail and not the police.

More and more bs coming out now that the prime suspect is dead? Too late. They should of did something when they had the chance. Anything the pull out now to me will only be sour grapes.

I agree but they do have an obligation, I would hope, to make sure they rule out any other suspects or even the (seemingly) remote chance that someone else killed her. Or even she's living on a beach somewhere since they still haven't found a body... which is pretty much playing devils's advocate since the police think she's dead.

Condolences to the family and friends. :(

That's funny, that's exactly what the defense attorneys always say when they can't find a woman's body: "Sure, she could have left her children with an abusive husband, and she's probably on a beach 'somewhere' with another dude." And since everyone "smart enough" already ducked jury duty, that usually ends up sufficing for "reasonable doubt."

If Susan had any inkling how sick her father inlaw was, she had to have known what a cooke her husband was? She should have grabbed her kids and ran! Just saying," easier said than done I guess. God bless her and those two adorable boys.

I don't know what Susan was like but the very first time I saw Josh Powell on tv I had this creepy feeling about him. Didn't she think he was creepy at all? She knew his father was creepy so it surprises me that she wouldn't feel the same way about the son.

I guess everyone's creep radar is differerent. I have a brother in law who is a 9 on my creep radar, always has been, always will be. Josh Powell raised mine immediately.

in your first paragraph you basically say that because Josh's father is a creep, Susan should've known Josh was a creep too. I put it in different words but that's what you said. Then in paragraph two you say that your brother in law is a creep.... does that automatically make your husband a creep for being his brother or your sister a creep for marrying him? Little contradicting.

No such animal as a "Perfect Crime".

If Josh Powell thinks there is such a thing, I'd just like to see how he's going to explain his actions to Almighty God on Judgment Day.

Especially since you start boasting about the "perfect crime", it is no longer that perfect crime (since the perfect ones are those that no one knows was committed).

Actually there is such a thing as a perfect crime: a crime where nobody suspects that a crime occurred.

The issue with current day America (US) is that it is slowly getting opened up, with no privacy to encroaching alien cultures. It is eating up the vitals, and in days to come, the native citizens would start reacting to non-tangible signals in troublesome manners. The issue here is not an individual failing, but the overall collapse of the inner fiber of the social system.

03:31 PM on 04/08/2012
i think that this guy tryed to make some money off of the story and maybe selling his story to a talk show or something. but as far as being an accomplice, i'm sure when he was interviewed by the detectives they would have noticed anything out of the ordinary and would have charged him with a crime. if they didn't arrest him then i'm sure it was just a story.
he might of even did it to get his 15 minutes of fame.
sounds like one of those "most dumbest criminals" on that tv show.

I usually give the Police and DA the benefit of the doubt and I know the body was never found but I can't believe that this guy was never charged w/ the murder. Two little boys are dead because of it.

I have questioned the reasoning behind letting this guy have visitation with his kids at his home.

He should have been able to visit only in an controlled environment.
10:40 PM on 04/07/2012
West Valley City's police are about the dumbest law enforcement dept out there (ok, except for Sanford Florida's dept). How could there be so much evidence and no arrest? How could WVC allow a murderer to run loose for so long then take additional lives such as Susan's two boys too? Disgusting. I wonder how those investigators sleep at night -- hell, probably pretty good given how police conduct themselves these days -- code of silence when one of them is arrested for drunk driving, covering up brutality, murders, corruption and other illegal activities. Shame, shame on them.

We are not talking about big city police departments here. Small town departments probably hire anyone who can shoot a gun. Sometime's I'll go through a town and feel like it's Mayberry.

I don't know West Valley City's police department but I'm starting to understand their competency and I believe a department needs to be able to admit that they are over their heads in some cases. Apparently this case was over their heads or they didn't believe their evidence was strong enough because as more is released the more baffled I am as to why an arrest was never made on what they had.

Their only living witness or suspect needs to be questioned by experts now, they need to flush the guy out, do whatever it takes to find the answers, I'll turn my head the other way.

Sorry. Can't divorce as it would be a sin. (Actually knew a woman in a very conservative church who hired what she thought was a hitman to kill her husband. Her excuse? Divorce was a sin. The "hitman" was actually an undercover cop.)

Read a story about a woman who got rid of her husband in a southern state that starts with a K. Shot him, dumped him down a well, bought 25 tons of gravel to dump on the body and fill the well. Uh...........yeah she got caught.
