Santorum, 'Conservative Leaders' Meeting To Come Up With Secret Plan To 'Stop Romney' That Will Probably Fail Badly

Hey, everyone! So the news burning up your Internet today involves some behind-closed-doors meeting in Virginia with Rick Santorum and "conservative leaders" regarding some last ditch effort to "stop Mitt Romney." Do they have a time machine? Because this is maybe the meeting they should have had back on April 5, 2011, instead of now.

Here's CNN Political Editor Paul Steinhauser, with this important news item:

A source close to the GOP presidential candidate and former senator from Pennsylvania confirmed to CNN that the meeting was "requested by conservative leaders to discuss the best path moving forward in terms of getting conservatives to join together to stop Mitt Romney and eventually beat President Barack Obama in November."

The source stresses that the meeting "does not have anything to do about Rick getting out of the race."

Well, golly gosh, what is "the best path moving forward?" To be honest, I'd be interested in knowing what the worst path forward is. I'm just generally intrigued by this whole notion of a bunch of paths forward existing, with one being the "best," because it seems to me like the most likely path forward is Santorum losing the Pennsylvania primary to Romney, along with every other primary in April.

As near as anyone can tell, the new idea is probably some sort of unity effort in which Rick Santorum joins forces with Newt Gingrich. Or, more likely, they convince Gingrich to just quit the race. Mark Halperin teasingly tweets that "[Santorum] and Newt have also had some VERY long phone calls recently." Which could mean anything. I mean, you don't imagine it's easy to get off the phone with Newt Gingrich, once he gets rolling, do you?

Anyway, the salient point is that everyone who wants to "stop Romney" is still a day late and a dollar short, where "day" equals "a year," and "dollar" means "several million dollars," and the best plan they have at the moment is Santorum and Gingrich teaming up to lose to Mitt Romney, together in glory, the end.
