Three Sonorans Blog Run By Arizona Latino Activist Pulled from Tucson Citizen, Under Heavy Criticism And A Potential Lawsuit

Posted: 04/ 5/2012 6:34 pm Updated: 04/ 6/2012 11:50 am

This week, the Tucson Citizen, Arizona’s leading site for bloggers and citizen journalists, has pulled the plug on one of their most popular and controversial columnists.

David Morales’ blog, the Three Sonorans saw over 1.6 million visitors to the site -- last year, his blog singlehandedly crashed the Tucson Citizen when he broke the story of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords’ tragic shooting -- but despite his readership, the threat of a lawsuit by Arizona State Rep. Daniel Patterson became the proverbial last straw for Tucson Citizen editor Mark Evans.

In email correspondence published this week on The Range, Rep. Patterson -- who is currently facing an ethics investigation, per a report released last week by the Arizona House Ethics Committee that claims the politician has a lurid history of unprofessional behaviour towards staff and allegedly offering to trade sex for votes -- took issue to the following line in Morales’ post, “Is The World Conspiring Against Rep. Patterson?”:

“Then again, I don’t know what it is like to have rich parents or a father who was a mayor to shower privilege upon me by hiring lawyers to always get charges dropped.”
Rep. Patterson wrote to Evans:
Total lie. This racist liar doesn't know me or my family. Why do you continue to host him? His BS on this issue could cause a big lawsuit. Daniel

Evans mediated the dispute by asking Morales to remove the line and then delete an entire post entitled, “A Quick Lesson In Racism For Rep. Patterson And Other Non-Minorities.”

According to Morales, he was referring to Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) Board Member Michael Hicks -- the same Michael Hicks who appeared on the Daily Show to talk “no more burritos” and the ban on ethnic studies with Al Madrigal earlier this week.

However, Evans maintains that a history of sketchy fact-checking was a factor in the decision to shut down Morales’ blog. He tells the Tucson Sentinel that, "While the untruth Patterson complained about was minor, it was just one more example."

He also cites complaints from “anti-ethnic studies activist Lori Hunnicutt (who also briefly had a Citizen blog), TUSD Board President Mark Stegeman, TUSD Assistant Superintendent Lupita Garcia, and the Senate campaign of Rodney Glassman, among others” as a factor in his decision to pull the plug.

Despite this, blogger David Safier writes in BlogForArizona.com:

Morales leads with his heart and his passions and goes for the jugular when he writes. Absolute accuracy doesn't seem to be important to him, which, I imagine, gives the journalist in Evans fits. However, Morales has been an invaluable part of the information community in Southern Arizona, and he is among the most prominent public voices in the local Hispanic community. No one has posted more video, much of which he or his friends have shot and which can be an invaluable resource to me and others. No one has been as fearless at exposing what he sees as wrongs, taking on Democrats as well as Republicans. He can be infuriating at times, but he has an impact.

And, in a time when Arizona is banning books, in addition to eliminating the Mexican-American studies program in K-12 public schools, blogger and Tucson-native Jeff Briggers sees the move as a sign of the toxic political environment in the state. He writes on AlterNet.org that Morales is “the latest casualty in Tucson’s seemingly relentless crackdown on the city’s deeply rooted Latino community.”

While Morales was not available for comment regarding the dismissal, he tweeted this:

Three Sonorans
Looks like they got rid of Sean Arce yesterday and me today... spring cleaning so to speak

Sean Arce served as director of the Mexican American Studies program at TUSD.

Apparently, Truth can only come from one side...the white side. Everyone else is a liar after that. Tisk tisk...

That state's moral direction is as baron as the desert itself. I suppose they think a white state will somehow deflect the heat or something. Eh, they can keep that place if they want it so bad.

Patterson... threatens a law suit... while he is under investigation for ethics & is nearly expelled... and Morales has to edit his statements & then loses his blog. Me think thou protests to much. Newspapers, their CEO's & Editors should have the guts to stand up & defend their reporters. If "allegations" cannot be leveled at someone, and these allegations do seem to have some merit, without the accuser having to edit his story or lose his job, how are we to ever know about elected offices & the transgressions they "allegedly" have committed?

I was wondering how long it would take to finally get this reconquista racist thrown off of the Tucson Citizen.

You can't be writing about white society and just expect to get away with it. Even if it's true.

re: "the threat of a lawsuit by Arizona State Rep. Daniel Patterson became the proverbial last straw for Tucson Citizen editor Mark Evans."

- Kinda says it all. There are too many lawyers.
What happened to the 1st Amendment?
Outside of the lawsuit did it really cost the paper?

He crashed the servers, so he must have resonated with 1.6 million people over the past year.
That's a lot.

You can burn the American Flag, cuz it's free speech, but a guy on the web, gets his blog shut down by THREAT of lawsuit?

That's awful.

- For that reason alone they should not censor this guy. The deserts of the Southwest have a tradition of the loco in the desert who makes a lot of sense from time to time.

God Bless.

Nativist Tepublicant's hate being exposed, they dont like hearing this countries sordid history and how they cant justify their own presence here as being kosher. They attack people who dedicate their comments to FACTS and TRUTH in an effort to silence them.

I bet Patterson also blames Morales for his own "ethics (or lack thereof) investigation," too.

David should be given the highest respect for what he has done. For while when most of us see injustice and racism in our schools, communities, and politics, we frown at the news and say that somebody should do something to stop it, or somebody should stand up to it and say something about theses injustices, we rarely do ourselves. But not David Morales and the Three Sonorans. He has done what we all should be doing, and that is become involved and informed about issues concerning our families, our community, and our state. Haters will say he was one sided and issue orientated, but often times David's posts were the only place a person could turn to get information on local issues. And as far as him being a racist, what would you do if you lived in a community where people from your ethnic group were in the majority, and also had a very strong connection to the land which dates back centuries, and then after all this you were told that you and your history are irrelevant. Probably the same thing that a lot of us did and that was hope somebody like David would stand up for you as well, and report on the injustices that you felt were being brought upon you. Thank you for all the hard work David and respectfully Si Se Puede......

So, let him set up his own blog, or blog for another location. I would be willing to follow him to keep up with his opinions.

I suppose this will blow over because if he leaves he will take a lot of readership with him.
