England Bans Cigarette Displays In Supermarkets, Large Stores

Cigarettes

LONDON -- British ministers say a ban on displaying packs of cigarettes inside supermarkets and other large stores will send a message that smoking is no longer acceptable.

Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said Friday – as the restrictions came into force – that the ban would show that Britons "no longer see smoking as a part of life."

The ban applies only in England and will be extended to smaller stores by 2015. It means cigarettes must be hidden behind screens, or under shop counters.

England is following the lead of Iceland, Ireland, and Canada, all of which previously introduced similar measures.

A ban on smoking indoors in public places, such as pubs, was introduced in Scotland in 2006 and in England in 2007.

War on smokers while beer companies buy all the ad time in many major sporting events?

Is england is taking a page from American politics by attempting to misdirect attention from really important matters?

I don't know how anyone in the UK can afford to smoke anyway. The financial burden of smoking there is astronomical. It does demonstrate how addictive tobacco must be if people are prepared to spend so much on cigarettes. And of course, as here, most of the tobacco addicts are from the poorer populations anyway, who have least money to spare for their pleasures. They go without necessaries to buy their drug. For people more comfortably circumstanced, there are other means of gratification, more hope for better things. I was once told that beer and cigarettes are the only things many poor people have that makes it worth opening their eyes in the morning.

You know the government will do all of the things to make it hard to go have a smoke
They will sue the tabbaco co and win settlement worth tens of millions of dollars
To cover smoking related illness. You know to cover the health care cost that people can't pay
So you go to the doctor and you are billed for the care and you can go to your state and get some of the settlement money to pay the bill. What am I thinking you can't do that the state government will send you packing and you will get o help. So what is the states like Michigan who gets 22 million dollars a Mo in payments form the tabbaco Co spending the money on I know it must be add to help people stop smoking

America should pose a similar ban on politicians looking to sell themselves.

I quit smoking a few years back because i thought it was getting too expensive and the doctor said I had fluid in my lungs from it. Now I live in Australia and I don't know how smokers afford it here. You can buy them in packs of 20,30, or 40 I believe. I was behind a woman in line who asked for 3 packs of cigs and I heard the lady say $50. I about fell over. Come to find out that 30 packs are about $20 a pack now.
We also have some eye opening tv commercials about smoking. They would never show these in America, but they should.

I think I know the ads you are talking about. They just started airing here: people with lost limbs, throat excisions, removed sections of jaw, etc etc.

That is a fantastic idea. A better idea would be to stop sales of cigarettes. Legalize marijuana and outlaw cigarettes. Death penalty for those that sell cigarettes would be in order as 400,000 Americans die from smoking every year. And they are worried about Terrorism. No contest.

Doesn't England have a health tax at the POP for cigarettes? If the gov'ts point is persuading smokers to quit then the high price might have an effect. If not, then the tax would help defer the cost of care for those that have health complications due to smoking...

I wish I could fan back people who fan me, but for the last six months or so, I don't get the email notification, even though I have that option checked. I hope others don't have that same HP problem.

The fact that we Americans got the entire planet addicted to this noxious weed should have been a big clue to the rest of the world but nooooo.

You mean all those Englishmen Columbus met in 1492? I forgot about them. And Walter Raleigh had very little to do with the tobacco trade. You may want to turn off the history channel; it's not doing you any favors.

Liquor, gas stations and smoke shops should be the only retailers allowed to sell cigarettes. The fact that they are allowed to be sold in supermarkets and pharmacies is a complete joke. Good job England.
