AUGUSTA, Ga. — Lee Westwood played the first 12 holes at even par to hold onto his lead at the Masters on Friday, though a big group of familiar names was beginning to crowd him near the top of the leaderboard.

During a blustery second round at Augusta National, Peter Hanson made three straight birdies to tie Westwood at 5-under par and Jason Dufner, bundled up and wearing a stocking cap, birdied Nos. 13 and 14 to join them.

Louis Oosthuizen was a shot back, then came a group of household names at 3 under, including Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia and 52-year-old Fred Couples, who birdied Nos. 7, 8 and 9 get into the mix on this, the 20th anniversary of his crowd-pleasing win at Augusta.

The players were greeted by cloudy, windy weather more reminiscent of the British Open than the Masters. As morning turned to afternoon, however, the wind died down a bit and the sun started peeking out. Sweater weather, for sure, but a pretty nice day to take a walk around the grounds.

"I don't think anybody's really going to run away with it today," said Sean O'Hair, after an early morning round of 70 left him at 1 over. "I think a good score is going to be 1-, 2-under par."

But those making a move were trying to go lower. Couples, McIlroy and Garcia, playing with an infected middle finger on his left hand, all shot 3-under 33 on the front.

Joining the group at 3 under was Paul Lawrie, the 1999 British Open champion. Miguel Angel Jiminez was at 3 under with an afternoon tee time awaiting.

Tiger Woods also had an afternoon tee time and was hoping for a better start than he had Thursday.

Woods knocked his first two tee shots deep into the trees and scrambled for pars there. He was errant on his last two tee shots, as well, and finished bogey-bogey, then headed to the driving range to work out the problems.

Fresh off a win in Orlando two weeks ago, Woods was a favorite to take his first major since 2008, but he wasn't looking quite as solid after his even-par opening round that could have been much worse.

Phil Mickelson also struggled in the opening round and was hanging around early in the second. He made two birdies and got to 1 over, tied for 33rd with more than half the players on the course. .

Looking over the leaderboard, one name glaringly missing is that of Ernie Els. You would think someone with three major wins would get an automatic invite.

There are no automatic invites. People have to qualify (which Ernie Els didn't), and then they are invited. It's up to Atlanta National GC to extend invitations on top of that. They decided to invite a young gun instead, which I find unfortunate as well. But, as with their decision regarding female members, it's up to them, as it is, after all, an invitational. :-)

It was kind of refreshing to watch the coverage of some tourneys a awhile back that didnt have the Tiger "hoopla". I still think she's got that voodoo doll with the pins sticking in it.

Tirades like Tigers' yesterday would not have been noticed back in the Arnie/Jack/Player days. Media never was as intense as today. Tantrums were thrown, but not shown again and again like now. Con men like Lee Trevino could also get away with bad behavior and put on their Merry Mex faces for the fewer cameras back then. Now, everyone sees and hears Tigers' actions and bad words, including impressionable kids, repeated thousands of times. I am surprised that the suits at Augusta haven't warned him or considered fining Woods for his behavior. The Masters has always been a different tournament, with players and fans alike being told to control themselves. Get a grip, TW, you are 36 years old now, and some foolish people still believe you are a role model.

You had me till that last sentence. Why do different rules apply to TW if just a few sentences before you were explaining that they all do/did it?
01:07 PM on 04/07/2012
No they should not be different rules. I may not have been clear. He is pretty much standing alone with his tirades nowadays. You don't see Phil, Rory, Bubba, Luke, et al, throwing clubs, saying epithets. Just TW. You can bet if the others did it, it would be all over ESPN, etc. That last sentence of my original note just says behave, just like all the other golfers. He has a big influence, even more so than most other golfers, on impressionable kids, as I'm sure you know. Saying Maryland Farmer all over the course is just bad behavior for TW or anybody else.

At least, when he quits this tourney, he can claim a sore toe as his excuse.

The Tiger Story is getting pretty boring. Would be nice to watch the event without all the Tiger Hoopla!

I know what you are thinking.

I told you yesterday, I smell an injury resurfacing, an excuse to get out. Woods won a second-rate tournament against second-tier players, and the press says he is back. Well, he's not, and never will be again.

Agreed! 1 win in 3 years does not make him "back". Just a story to get interest in the masters. No roar this time.
06:39 AM on 04/07/2012
Well, it's mostly ESPN perpetrating the story "Tiger is back". Every time he, Tiger, has a passable round, the talking heads and analysts at ESPN gather together at Tiger's zipper in hopes of giving him lavish "lip service". Tiger is entertaining, though. I absolutely loved the "kick the club" routine. LOL

Yes, we will see about that! Ever since Tigers dad passed, he has concentrated his attention on females and as such he cheated on his beautiful wife resulting in his divorce.
If you cheat, you are effectively a liar too! And Tiger finished 40th at the Masters. His temper tantrums will only get worse....poor little Tiger! You are finished.....

I am in total shock! A golf story that Tiger Woods isn't the main focus of, even though they just had to throw his name in there. Maybe after Tiger loses we won't have this now very subpar player constantly shoved down our throats.
